1 August 2012 Welcome to the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) I am writing to congratulate you on obtaining a place in the first year of the BA/MA (Hons) in Architecture degree and to let you know the arrangements for your first few days on the course. Orientation Events during Induction Week During Induction Week you will attend a series of ESALA meetings as detailed in the enclosed timetable. o o The first meeting is at 9.30 am (surnames A- N) or 10.30am (surnames M- Z) on Tuesday 11 th September, which welcomes you to the University and to Edinburgh College of Art (which ESALA is part of). This meeting is in the Lecture Theatre A, David Hume Tower. Your ESALA welcome meeting follows in the afternoon at 2pm Tuesday 11 th September in the Main Lecture Theatre, ECA, Lauriston Place. You are required to attend a Model Making Room induction course before using the equipment at Lauriston Place workshop and similar inductions will take place at the Minto House workshop during the year. In the first few weeks there will be Library inductions. Full access to studios/workshop is given only to students who attend relevant inductions and talks. Further details will be given to you in Freshers Week. Your first year studio will be at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) in Lauriston Place (Architecture School Level G and H). You will have access to facilities and resources across both campuses of Lauriston Place and Minto House. In addition, lectures and tutorials will be located centrally on both campuses. Student Support In addition to academic support provided as part of your programme, all students will have a Personal Tutor. Your Personal Tutor is a member of academic staff based in ESALA. His/her job is to provide you with advice about general academic matters, to ensure that illness or personal difficulties are dealt with appropriately and, eventually, to provide you with academic references. ECA also have administrative Student Support Officers (SSOs), who can handle routine enquiries about your studies and may act as your first point of contact if you run into difficulties and are unable to contact your Personal Tutor. Your Personal Tutor, or SSO, is the first point of contact for advice should you experience difficulties (whether academic or personal). You will meet your DoS in a meeting with other students during Induction Week, but you will also be able to make a personal appointment to see her/him during that week. BA/MA Architecture - Additional Programme expenses You should be aware that studying architecture will incur additional expenses. Students typically spend in the region of 500+ on materials, and computer consumables each year. Major field trips will be offered in specific years and you will be advised of exceptional costs in advance (where possible we aim to offer a range of field trip options). 1

2 To help you in your preparation for the course, we are enclosing an Equipment and Materials list and Information sheet. Please do not buy all items of equipment before you arrive. We do recommend that you obtain those items marked with an asterisk as you will need these for your first studio project. Most items can be purchased from the ECA shop which has very reasonable prices. Students are required to provide their own materials and equipment, as outlined in the attached document, including an A2 drawing board, which costs around 60 and can be ordered online. In addition to general equipment costs each student will pay an annual Additional Programme Cost of 50 (for 2012/13). This is collected by the University on behalf of ESALA and is payable when you matriculate. This fee covers studio related costs; this is a course/programme specific fee which is not covered by your tuition fee. Shared computing rooms are available but it is recommended that you consider bringing a laptop. If you plan to buy one prior to arrival please refer to Computing guidance at departments/accommodation- services/current- students/facilities/it- coms/computer- purchasing. Both campuses have wireless networks, and computing services will be able to assist you with any queries. Reading List All the books on the reading list can be borrowed from the Library once you have registered, although we do recommend students buy some books which are in great demand and regular use. Key readings during the courses will be provided through Learn (web- based learning environment). We very much look forward to welcoming you in September. In the meantime if you have any questions about getting started please get in touch through the ESALA Architecture Offices (Lauriston Place or Minto House campus). Yours sincerely Dr Soledad Garcia Ferrari BA/MA (Hons) Architecture Programme Director Lauriston Place ESALA Office Minto House ESALA Office /9 2

The largest IS helpdesk is in the Main Library. Study Skills The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) offer workshops for undergraduate students on a range of topics relating to your studies, including time management; lectures and note taking; giving presentations; reading and writing critically; and writing essays and assignments. The Institute is located in Bristo Square, opposite McEwan Hall. Additional Programme Cost: An annual fee is payable, for 2012/13 this is 50 and will be collected at matriculation. Health & Safety and Security You will be given a Health, Safety, and Security induction at the ESALA Introductory Meeting on Tuesday 11 September. A handbook will be available online for your reference. Attendance at Workshop and Equipment training is also required. Student Support For most students, coming to university for the first time will involve a big change of environment. Should you have any uncertainty regarding academic matters, or even personal ones, please speak to 3

4 your Personal Tutor, Student Support Officer or any other member of staff and, between us, we should be able to iron out most of the difficulties which arise. The Student Support Officers will be located across the ECA campus, including Lauriston Place and Minto House. They will be available to speak to students during office hours. Disability Office If you require any specific learning support or have needs relating to a specific disability please contact the University of Edinburgh Student Disability Service on the third floor of the Main Library Tel: / Disability.Service@ed.ac.uk / Web: office.ed.ac.uk/ Preliminary Reading List All the books on the reading list can be borrowed from the Library once you have registered, although we do recommend students buy some books which are in great demand and regular use.
