5 Disabled Access Guide for ECA Evolution House. This building has been designed for use by persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. All reception desks are fitted with induction loops. Introduction. ECA Evolution House is a state of the art teaching facility which is home to the School of Art and the School of Design. The building unifies several libraries which were previously located on different sites. Location. ECA Evolution House is located within what is referred to as the Lauriston Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public transport. The Lauriston Campus is located within the city centre approximately two miles from the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway lines are located at Waverley Station in the city centre and at Haymarket Station which is located to the West of the city centre. The nearest bus stop is located on West Port Road approximately 70 metres from ECA Evolution House. The number 2 Lothian bus service stops on West Port Road and numerous other services stop on Lauriston Place (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from: Persons arriving by vehicle can access ECA Evolution House from Lady Lawson Street via Lauriston Place. Lady Lawson Street is a one way street. Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access the building at the main entrance which is located on West Port Road, or alternatively, at a secure secondary entrance which is located on Lady Lawson Street (see map on the following page). However, wheelchair access to this building is not recommended without assistance. Page 4.

8 Parking. Within the Lauriston Campus there are four university car parks (see location map). Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors. The first university car park is located off Lady Lawson Street (one way street) to the rear of ECA Evolution House. This car park is accessed via a secure gate which requires a key fob to open. The car park is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contains a disabled bay. However, access from this car park to ECA Evolution House is via a vehicle access route which comprises a moderate gradient. Secure gate image. ECA Evolution House car park image. The second university car park is located off Lady Lawson Street within the college courtyard and the third university car park is located off Lauriston Place to the front of the ECA Hunter Building. Both of these car parks are suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contain a disabled bay. However, access from these car parks to ECA Evolution House is in excess of 200 metres and is via footpaths which comprise a steep gradient. College courtyard car park image. This car park is unsuitably surfaced for wheelchair users, is exited via a steep gradient, and, access from this car park to ECA Evolution House is in excess of 200 metres via a steep footpath. 9 Access to/from fourth car park image. Fourth car park image. There are eight additional university parking bays located to the side of the ECA Hunter Building, off Keir Street (see location map). Please note that these bays are currently out of use. University parking at the side of the ECA Hunter Building image. If you do not hold a valid permit (or key fob) and require use of a university bay, it is recommended that contact is made with Transport & Parking prior to your journey (see contact information page). City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking bays are located along Lady Lawson Street within close proximity of ECA Evolution House. However, there are limited drop kerbs from these bays to the adjacent footpaths and the adjacent footpaths comprise a steep gradient. Page 8.

10 Outside Access. ECA Evolution House has two entrances. The main entrance is located on West Port Road and is accessed via a public footpath which is of a steep gradient. Main entrance image. There are two doors at the main entrance. The door to the left is a manually operated revolving door which rotates anti-clockwise and is unsuitable for wheelchair access. Revolving door image. 11 The door to the right is a manually operated secure door which opens outwards and requires a valid university smartcard and pin code to access. This door is suitable for access by wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties. However, wheelchair access to this entrance is not recommended without assistance. Secure door image. There is an intercom call point and a card proximity reader/keypad located to the right of the main entrance doors. The intercom call point can be used to gain assistance. 12 The second entrance is located on Lady Lawson Street. This entrance is also accessed via a public footpath which is of a steep gradient. Secondary entrance image. There are two secure doors at the secondary entrance which both require a valid university smartcard to access. The first door is manually operated, opens outwards and is released using a card proximity reader/keypad which is located on the wall to the left of the door. Manually operated door image. Upon proceeding through the first door, or alternatively, upon accessing the secondary entrance from the ECA Evolution House car park, there is an automated door. This door also opens outwards and is operated using a card proximity reader/keypad which is located on the wall to the left of the door. Page 11.

If you are a wheelchair user or have mobility difficulties and are visiting ECA Evolution House for the first time, it is recommended that contact is made with the ECA Health and Safety Officer prior to your journey (see contact information page). Internal Access. Upon entering ECA Evolution House at the main entrance, wheelchair access beyond the entrance foyer is via a ramp. The ramp is of a moderate gradient and incorporates a handrail to one side. Ramp image. Page 12.

14 Upon entering ECA Evolution House at the secondary entrance there is a ramp which is of a shallow gradient. The ramp does not incorporate handrails. Ramp within secondary entrance image. The ECA Library is located over part of the ground and first floors; with the main entrance being located on the first floor (see floor plans). Wheelchair access to the ground floor of the library is possible via a secure door which is located adjacent the lifts on this level. The secure door is heavy, is operated manually, opens outwards and requires a valid university smartcard to access. There is a card proximity reader located to the left of the secure door within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. The library personnel can provide assistance for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties. To arrange assistance prior to your journey please call the library reception on: Receptions. Main Reception. - The main reception is located to the left upon entering the building at the main entrance. - The reception desk is suitable for wheelchair approach but is not recessed. - Lighting levels are good. - There is an induction loop. - The main reception is located in close proximity of the lifts. All floors are accessible by lift. - There is ramped access to the lifts from both the main and secondary entrances. - The lift call points are at an accessible height. - Lift car controls are available on both sides of the lifts and are within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. - The control panels have braille markings. - There is an alarm and an emergency intercom. - There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. - There is an audible announcer. - The lifts have a mirror on the rear wall. - The lift car interiors have handrails on three walls. - There is a visual floor indicator. - The lighting level is not good. - The lift doors have pressure sensors.
