3 WELCOME ALL NEW STUDENTS Congratulations on gaining a place on one of our courses in the Department of the Visual Arts here at the Wisbech Campus. You are now a student at the College of West Anglia. You have started on a journey in the Visual arts which we hope will result in you continuing on to University, or onto an Apprenticeship or into employment. The team of staff that will be teaching, supporting and guiding you all have a lot of specialist experience and knowledge and have a high level of dedication and determination to help you to succeed to the best of your ability. We know that you will commit yourself to your studies and that you will enjoy your experience here with us. We do expect you to attend 100% and to come prepared for your lessons. We have a detailed equipment list for the different subjects taught and recommend that you purchase items to enable you to make a good and positive start to your course. RESOURCE FEE All students at the college will be charged a resource fee at the start of their course. In the Visual Arts Department this fee is used to equip the art studios and computers with key materials, resources and facilities to keep our delivery of the art courses up to date and viable. This year the fee is 70 and will need to be paid at enrolment. If you are on a two year course, this fee will need to be paid again at the start of the second year of your course. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the college Student Services to ask about the costs of the course and the resource fee. ART TRIPS AND EDUCATIONAL VISITS As a student of the Visual Arts, it is a vital part of your training that you see and experience examples of world class Art and Design work. We will be organising trips and workshops to Galleries and museums throughout the year. You will need to be prepared to pay for these and to see this as a key and interesting part of your course to help you to gain a greater understanding of this exciting field of study. INDUCTION WEEK In the First week of your new term, we have Induction. This will be a week of collecting and organising important information about you, your qualifications, about health and safety in the studios and in getting to know the other students and staff on your course and in the department. Please make sure you bring your qualification certificates and identification (if required) with you at the start of the term for this. There will also be a trip which you will need to pay for on the College Online Store further information is included later in this pack. 4 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design Level 3 The Extended Diploma in Graphic Design at the Wisbech Campus is a very exciting and challenging course for students. Whilst investigating a wide range of design disciplines, the course specialises in an extensive variety of graphic techniques, thereby allowing students to develop a portfolio that reflects their individuality and creative strengths. This can then be used as the basis for higher education or entry into the design industry. The Wisbech Graphic Design Studio is well equipped with some of the latest Apple Mac computers and you will receive training on industry standard software applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark Xpress and Final Cut Pro. The learning environment mirrors a working studio and our approach is busy but relaxed - a place where students are encouraged to develop their own learning. Within this environment, important lessons are learnt about hitting deadlines and maintaining standards of high quality under pressure. You will be required to continue with projects independently and it is expected that there will be hours independent study undertaken at home each week. Teaching methods vary from small group exercises, crits, whole class teaching and one-to-one guidance. The course works within a system of units over two years and is continually assessed with feedback and grades given for every project. Graphic specialist fields of study will give the student experience in typography, interface design, book cover and magazine design, poster design, advertising, corporate design, information graphics, packaging and animation, whilst core units will introduce students to a wide range of Art and Design disciplines such as visual studies and historical and contextual understanding. Our students are encouraged to make use of all the resources available to them. Functional skills will be delivered as part of the programme. Students aged who do not already have GCSE qualifications in maths and/or English at grades A*-C will take qualifications in English and /or Maths as part of their study requirement this is a government requirement.

7 Dear Parent/Guardian/Student As part of our induction week activities we are proposing to take an educational visit to Cambridge. The date of the visit is Wednesday, 9 September 2015, leaving College promptly at 9.15am and returning from Cambridge to arrive back at the College at approximately 4.30pm. The cost of the trip is 10. To reserve your place on the trip please visit the College Online Store and select Trips. Please then select the item headed Visual Arts, Wisbech Campus Induction Trip Cambridge. We suggest students bring their ID card and a packed lunch. The educational visit is an important part of the course and we hope that you will support it. Please complete and hand over the tear-off slip below to your Course Director on the first day of term. Please read the attached Safe Systems for off Site Visits, and take the copy with you on the visit. 9 Safe system off site visits / studies students The purpose for this Safe System of Work is to provide guidance on safe practice that minimises exposure to hazards and so prevents harm to persons. This safe system must be followed at all times. Any problems should be reported to your line manager/supervisor/tutor immediately. It is the responsibility of every employee/student at the College: To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions To identify and report unsafe acts and unsafe conditions To report defective or faulty equipment immediately This guidance is intended to act as a checklist/reminder and can also be used as the basis for student /staff briefing. The Safe System Of Work should be used in accordance with the instructions given to you by your manager/supervisor/tutor: Your manager/tutor will regularly review the Safe System Of Work If the Safe System Of Work becomes unworkable at any time, you should tell your manager/supervisor/tutor. Warning The Public highway very busy with traffic and all must take care whilst using pavements and roads. Pedestrians are to take extra care whilst crossing roads. Prohibition Never run out into the road. Never push or startle another pedestrian near busy roads. Never partake in horseplay or games next to roads or on pavements or on visited premises. Never step out into the road from behind parked vehicles or other obstructions. Mandatory Always report suspicious persons to your Tutor or Learning Support Officer on college visits. If approached by strangers acting aggressively or inappropriately report to your Tutor or Learning Support Officer immediately. Always act towards the public and fellow students/tutors in a polite and courteous manner. You must take extra care whilst crossing roads. Ensure that any required medication has been taken prior to the visit/college day starting. You must comply with Health and safety instructions given by the management of any site or organisation visited at all times. You must report any suspicious persons or activities to Security, The police or your Tutor or any other member of college staff immediately. Safety Students are to make use of pedestrian crossings, Subways and other safe means of crossing roads when ever possible. Every student is to receive instruction/briefing prior to visits commencing from their tutor. Local hazards You are to wear a seat belt when fitted whilst travelling on all vehicles You must provide detail of any medical condition/special needs requirement, which is relevant to the visit to the visit organiser If you are uncertain about any aspect of this Safe System Of Work, tell your manager/supervisor/tutor immediately.
