Our new Director of Physician Assistant Studies, Dr. Medea Valdez, has just been hired, and is rapidly developing Kean s Physician Assistant Program. The Council for Accredita on of Counseling Related Educa onal Programs (CACREP) Board of Directors met July 10 12, 2014, for the purpose of rendering accredita on decisions. At his mee ng, the Board reviewed an Interim Report submi ed by the Nathan Weiss Graduate College to support its request for the removal of the two year condi onal status placed on the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.A. degree) programs located at the Kean Ocean and Union campuses. From the Desk of the Dean Our new Director of Physical Therapy, Dr. Shannon N. Clifford is also developing Kean s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. We ve admi ed large classes of Nursing Ph.D. students and Ed.D. students, and more doctoral programs are now in development, including the Speech Language Pathology and Counselor Educa on Programs. Educa onal Leadership is also working on a new Ed.S. for students. Our Advanced Studies in Psychology Department, led by Dr. Andrew Wolanin, recently received a large dona on from Jonathan and Marjorie Slass to create a Center for Au sm Assessment and Support Services in the Kean Psychology Clinic. We expect to see many more children with au sm diagnosed Based on the Board s review of the report and suppor ng documenta on, they decided to remove the condi on and to extend the accredita on status of these programs through the remainder of the eight year cycle which will end on October 31, This is an amazing accomplishment and a stellar congratula ons is extended to Nathan Weiss Graduate College, the Counseling Department and Dean Beck. F A L L and receiving treatment in the clinic this year. On Sunday October 19, we will have our first Nathan Weiss Memorial Cougar Color 5k, a race to benefit graduate student scholarships. I encourage you to sign up to run or to volunteer. It will help the graduate student community. To all new students, welcome to graduate school! 2 PAGE 2 The Graduate College 2014 Distinction Dinner Presenting the Faculty of Distinction Dr. Jennifer Block Lerner joined the faculty of Kean University as an Associate Professor in Prior to coming to Kean, she was a tenured faculty member at La Salle University and a visi ng Assistant Professor at Skidmore College. Currently, she teaches, supervises, conducts research and engages in the mentoring of students in the Psy.D. in Combined School and Clinical Psychology program. Dr. Block Lerner also serves as the Director of Research in the Psy.D. program and, among other courses, teaches first year and more advanced classes in sta s cs and research methodology. She also enjoys teaching undergraduate Psychology majors at Kean. Dr. Block Lerner is currently working with doctoral and bachelor level students in developing, implemen ng, and evalua ng the value of brief mindfulness and acceptance based stress management/ wellness fostering workshops for undergraduate students as well as graduate students who are healthcare professionals in training. She has published, solely and with colleagues and students, numerous journal ar cles and book chapters, and is currently co edi ng a book on mindfulness and acceptance based behavioral approaches in higher educa on with colleague Dr. LeeAnn Cardacio o of La Salle University. Dr. J. Barry Mascari is an Associate Professor and the Program Coordinator of the Counselor Educa on Department at Kean University. He received his Ed.D. in Counseling Educa on and Supervision from Argosy University Sarasota in 2004 and holds a Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Bridgeport and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Farleigh Dickinson University Teaneck. Dr. Mascari is a New Jersey Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LCADC), as well as a Na onal Cer fied Counselor (NCC) with addic ons and mental health special es and a cer fied New Jersey Disaster Response Crisis Counselor. He became a full me faculty member at Kean, in 2004 a er beginning as an adjunct in 1985.Dr. Mascari has over 30 years of counseling related experience in schools and treatment, serving as a district director of counseling and student services, as well as execu ve director of a statewide alcohol and drug abuse preven on agency. For ten years he was a member of the New Jersey Counselors Licensing Board a er serving as the Chairman for eight of those years. Offices held include: Board member, CACREP, President of the American Associa on of State Counseling Boards (AASCB), President of the New Jersey Counseling Associa on and the New Jersey Mental Health Counselors Associa on, and one of the founders of the New Jersey Council on Divorce and Family Media on. Dr. Virginia Fitzsimons is originally a New Yorker, educated in the City University system and Columbia University. She declares herself sold on New Jersey, in par cular Long Beach Island. Dr. Fitzsimons came to Kean from Rutgers University in 1981 to write and ini ate the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science Nursing program. She wrote and started the Masters of Nursing program in 1996 and opened the Kean Ocean Nursing program in January of This past January, she wrote and started the Ph.D. in Nursing Educa onal Leadership program which has 24 students preparing to become Principal Inves gators and Nursing faculty. They will serve in all levels of nursing educa on in the region, including direc on research and educa onal programs in a broad range of acute care, long term care and community based agencies, colleges and universi es.

Barrasso, M.A. holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Loyola University in Maryland, a Master of Arts in Educa onal Psychology and a Professional Diploma in School Psychology from Kean University. She is currently a Psy.D. candidate in the Combined School and Clinical Psychology program, with an expected gradua on date in May She is currently serving as a Neuropsychological Assessment extern at the Memorial Sloan Ke ering Cancer Center in New York. She holds memberships with the Associa on of Behavioral and Cogni ve Therapies and the Na onal Associa on of School Psychologists. Chris na has served as an ad hoc journal reviewer for the Clinical Psychology Review. She is credited as co author of three publica ons; Taking it to the classroom: Exploring college students interest in a brief mindfulness and acceptance based workshop in The Behavior Therapist; and Building psychological flexibility within and outside of the classroom: Mindfulness and acceptance based behavioral approaches in higher educa on which is currently under contract with Routledge. Ru ka Patel completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Biotechnology at Kean University. Ru ka then joined the NJ Center for Science, Technology and Mathema cs at Kean University with an ambi ous goal of comple ng her master s degree in Biotechnology. She will complete her Master of Science degree by the end of this year. In January 2013, Ru ka joined Dr. Dil Ramanathan s laboratory and stood out for her excep onal research skills. Since joining the laboratory, she has made remarkable progress and is the driving force in moving forward Dr. Ramanathan s current research project the detec on of metal binding sites in amino acids, pep des and proteins. Preliminary results from this study were accepted and Ru ka presented a poster at the 2014 American Society of Mass Spectrometery (ASMS) na onal mee ng in Bal more, Maryland in June Ru ka currently holds membership with the American Red Cross Spectrometry (ASMS) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). Barbara A. Prempeh, M.A. has worked with faculty on various research endeavors and clinical cases in the training clinic. She has spearheaded projects rela ng to classifying biases among educa on professionals and the effect of violent song lyrics on emo on regula on skills. She also provided invaluable assistance with Dr. Brandwein s research, primarily on a project involving needs assessments for programs addressing bullying and vic miza on in several New Jersey parochial schools. Barbara s work on this project involved coding focus group data, which she did with exper se. She has mul ple publica ons and professional presenta ons. In February of 2012, Barbara was the lead presenter of papers on projects at the Na onal Associa on of School Psychologist Conference (NASP) Annual Conference. Barbara has presented at the NASP conference in Philadelphia, PA, Howard University McNair Conference in Washington,D.C. and the University at Buffalo Na onal McNair Conference. Donna Reinbeck, RN, M.S.N., graduated with dis nc on from Kean University with her MSN degree highlighted by a 4.0 GPA. She was subsequently selected to be the Graduate with Dis nc on speaker for the 2013 Nathan Weiss Graduate College Commencement. Donna is also a member of the CMC Research Council and Ethics Commi ee. She has been the lead author along with Dr. Virginia Fitzsimons on the following publica ons: Reverse mentoring; Bridging nursing s digital genera onal gap. Published in April 2014 in Nursing Management, and Evidence based nursing; Improving the pa ent experience through bedside shi report also in Nursing Management February She has raised the quality care scores through an educa on program for nursing staff and physicians at St. Barnabas. Donna is a member of the Best of Oncology Nursing Society Conference Planning Commi ee and acts as a CMC liaison to the University of Pennsylvania Oncology Team.

5 VOLUME I,V Women have always contributed to science from the earliest mes. In current mes they con nue to prevail through their hard work and dedica on in this constantly evolving field of study. As originally reported by the Center for History, Poli cs and Policy (CHPP) weekly series, Assemblywoman Anne e Quijano was quoted saying, In recent years, one of the largest and growing industries in New Jersey is the field of life sciences. At the forefront of this field are many smart, innova ve, and noteworthy women. We are proud of the work of Dr. Ramanathan and Ms. Bachovchin. Kelly Bachovchin, a Kean graduate student and Dr. Dil Ramanathan, an assistant professor at Kean University s New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathema cs, Women In Science Honored In State Assembly were recognized on March 20, 2014 for their outstanding contribu ons to women in the sciences. Dr. Ramanathan is currently the graduate coordinator for the Master of Science Biotechnology program. She started the Biotechnology Club in 2008 and s ll serves as the advisor. Dr. Ramanathan remains dedicated to the students in her program. Ms. Bachovchin was recently named as Kean University s Research Student of the year. In 2013, she earned a Bachelor degree in Molecular Biology from Kean. In 2014, she earned a Master of Science degree in Biotechnology Science from Kean as well. Her research projects consisted of crea ng small molecule compounds as treatments for mul ple myeloma and fungal diseases. She created a library of 27,000 compounds to be tested against biological targets at a local biotech company. We are tremendously proud of these two great scien sts and we are grateful to Assembly members Anne e Quijano and Ryan Cryan for recognizing their talents and their leadership said Dr. Dawood Farahi, President of Kean University. 6 PAGE 6 FACULTY SPOTLIGHT Aaron Gubi, Ph.D., NCSP will begin working at Kean University as an Assistant Professor, in the Psychology department in Fall He is a na ve of New Jersey, who completed his undergraduate study at Rowan University. He earned his M.S. in Educa onal Psychology in 2009, and his Ph.D. in Educa onal Psychology in 2012 at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. He worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow in Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Virginia and as Psychologist and Unit Clinical Director at the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents in Staunton, Virginia. He has published ar cles in major journals in his field, including School Psychology. Dr. Gubi also has previous experience teaching English and Social Studies at the middle and high school levels, domes cally and abroad. He has published and co authored ar cles in major journals in his field which include Psychology in the Schools, the Journal of Educa onal Psychology, and The Communique. In his free me, Dr. Gubi enjoys spending me with family and friends, interna onal and domes c travel, a ending theatre and art exhibits, hiking, yoga and mindfulness prac ces, and playing racquetball and basketball. The Nathan Weiss Graduate College welcomes Dr. Gubi. Moving in the Write Direction Wri ng, in general, is a complex process. The kind of wri ng expected of graduate students takes the complexity to another level altogether. At the Kean University Wri ng Center, they understand the challenges of wri ng for academic and professional audiences. The Wri ng Center is an invi ng place where all students have access to quality wri ng support at any stage of the wri ng process. The staff consists of both undergraduate and graduate students that can aid fellow students in planning, dra ing, and revising their assignments for any course from developmental to doctoral levels. In a typical session students have an interac ve conversa on with a wri ng coach fellow students who are trained in listening for the key elements in a student s paper and providing though ul feedback, that has the poten al to impact your long term growth as writers as well as impact your current wri ng project.
