2 Introduction WELCOME Welcome to the New Jersey Mental Health Institute, Inc. s (NJMHI) Directory of Multicultural Resource Agencies, prepared by the Changing Minds, Advancing Mental Health for Hispanics project for the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health Services Office of Multicultural Services. NJMHI, an outgrowth of the New Jersey Association of Mental Health Agencies (NJAMHA), is a private nonprofit organization, a 501(c)(3) based in Mercerville, New Jersey whose mission is to promote quality mental health services through policy development initiatives, training, technical assistance, research, data collection, best practice development, and anti-stigma and anti-discrimination campaigns. NJMHI was established in July 2000 to supplement the array of services provided to NJAMHA mental health provider agencies and mental health consumers and their families and to bring advocacy-based research into practice. In collaboration with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, NJMHI is assisting the Training and Technical Assistance efforts of the State of New Jersey s Partnership for Children, as well as operating a Cultural Diversity Speakers Bureau and sponsoring the Hispanic Higher Education Scholarship Fund, which is targeted to bilingual, bicultural Hispanics seeking higher education degrees in the mental health field. NJMHI is also spearheading efforts in New Jersey to enhance access to and quality of mental health for Hispanics, through its award-winning project, Changing Minds, Advancing Mental Health for Hispanics. The overall goal of this Directory of Multicultural Resource Agencies is to increase the knowledge of available mental health and social services in the State of New Jersey. It is our hope that this Directory will assist service system gatekeepers, service providers (e.g., juvenile justice workers, child welfare providers, immigration officers, etc.), and community leaders, such as church leaders, civic and organization leaders and social service agency administrators with enhancing their awareness of services that can be utilized by New Jersey residents in need of mental health and/or social services. With enhanced knowledge of the availability and location of services, it is expected that individuals needing services will be more likely to utilize the services as needed. The NJMHI s primary objective for this project was to develop a comprehensive, easy-to-use and build on Directory of Multicultural Resource Agencies. The directory features a listing of all mental health programs in the State of New Jersey and is broken down by county, and includes a listing of services provided by that agency. In addition, the language(s) in which clinical (e.g., social workers, mental health counselors, psychologists) and medical (e.g., psychiatrists) personnel can provide services in is also provided. We believe this information will be extremely valuable, as many individuals do not seek treatment because of language and cultural barriers. Furthermore, the directory includes a listing of all public and private social service organizations with specific attention to organizations providing services to underserved populations, such as African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanics, and describes what services are offered by these organizations. The directory also includes a listing of civic organizations and associations dedicated to advancement for members of these ethnic minority groups. NJMHI s goal is to produce a product that will not only increase the knowledge of available mental health and social services, but also a product that will increase knowledge of ethnic minority organizations, which can provide support, advocacy, or a social outlet for members of the underserved ethnic minority groups referenced earlier. We hope that you find this Directory helpful and would like to extend a sincere thanks to the following individuals and/or organizations for making this Directory a reality: State of New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health Services; Stacey E. Abate, Project Coordinator,;Shannon Milinovich, Graphic Designer; Peter J. Guarnaccia, Ph.D., Evaluator, and Member of Changing Minds, Advancing Mental Health for Hispanics Project Management Team. Thank you for your interest in our work, and best wishes on enhancing access to services for our state s racial and ethnic minority group members. Sincerely, Henry Acosta, MA, MSW, LSW NJMHI Deputy Director and Project Director Changing Minds, Advancing Mental Health for Hispanics Page 2
