This house was built about 1905 on the North Rd. for George Ricker, then working the farm with Walter Curit. Long after it was moved in 1926, the Weagles built a house on the original foundation. The Varneys and now Deborah Hall were subsequent owners of this site. The cottage itself has changed hands "within the Ballard family" over the years. The cottage, now owned by Joe Ballard, and Theo Stavropoulos' "studio" were once part of that original building. The monthly House Histories are selected and written by Martha Hamilton. This series is presented on behalf of the Chebeague Historical Society and Island Library to provide additional information and correct what had originally been documented for a 1977 House History Survey. Martha welcomes further clarifications or details about any house she reports on Martha has been doing the Calendar covers since 1965! Actual date TBD CCPC Chebeague Comprehensive Planning Committee As this edition of the Calendar reaches you, the Comprehensive Planning Committee has just held a public meeting on the results of January s comprehensive planning survey, and you should have gotten one of our periodic newsletters about it. The survey results will be a basic guideline to the Committee in its continuing work to develop longrange policies for the Town and to generate discussion on topics which people think are important but where there was not general agreement on what to do for example, improving access to both ferry wharves on the island. This spring and summer the Committee has been working on inventories and preliminary policy ideas for the island economy, including the marine economy, land use, public and non-profit facilities and services, roads (largely being done by Herb Maine and Mark Dyer), transportation to the mainland, energy (largely the work of John Wilson) and island demographics. We expect to report to the community on at least some of these topics fairly early in the Fall. The one area that was reported on in July was John Wilson s work on the feasibility of generating electricity on the island from wind turbines. His talk Page 4 was sponsored by the CPC and CICA. As an economist, John said that wind power could make sense for Chebeague, but it is subject to a variety of caveats related to the strength of the wind, the size of the wind turbine, the financial incentives built into state and national energy policy and the price of competing forms of energy. In the present uncertain environment, the scale of wind turbine that has the best pay-back time is a modest 10kw generator that would serve a couple of houses, rather than the large generators that could serve the whole island. Thea Youngs, our GIS fellow from the Island Institute, will be completing her work in September and will go on to enroll in the Planning Program of the Muskie School at USM. Her major task this summer before she leaves, is to document the large number of maps she has created for the Town, so that others can use them in the future. She is also working to put the work of the Comprehensive Planning Committee meeting minutes, inventories, newsletters and maps -on the Town s website:

7 CHC Chebeague Health Center It s hard to believe that the sun has been out for 3 days in a row!!! So it s time to think about those dreaded heat-related illnesses. Although ANYONE can suffer from heat-related illnesses, people 65yrs and older are more likely to get them. Older people don t adapt as quickly to sudden temperature changes. They often have chronic medical problems that alters the way their bodies respond to heat. The medicines the elderly take for their medical conditions can interfere with their bodies ability to regulate its temperature. Other people who are at risk are infants, young children, and people with mental illness. Bottom line if it s hot, humid, you ve been in direct sun or heat, there hasn t been a breeze, you ve been physically active and/or in poor condition you too can develop one of the heat-related illnesses listed below. Heat Rash: The rash is caused excessive sweating during a hot, humid day. The red clusters of pimples or blisters are most often seen on the neck, upper chest, groin, under the breasts and in the elbow creases. First Aid: get to cooler environment, keep affected area dry. Heat Exhaustion: Occurs when you ve gotten dehydrated. If you are active on a hot day you can loose 1 to 1 ½ quarts of fluid PER HOUR. Symptoms include: profuse sweating, weakness, fatigue, nausea, muscle cramps in the legs, arms or belly, dizziness, confusion, clammy moist skin, pale or flushed complexion, slightly elevated body temperature, fast & shallow breathing. First Aid: Get to a cooler environment, drink water or other NON-alcoholic beverages. Take a cool shower/bath/sponge bath. Call 911 if you don t improve. Heat Stroke: can kill you. This is when your body can no longer control its temperature. You ve stopped sweating. Your body temperature can rise to 106F in minutes. This is a life-threatening emergency - death or permanent disability can o cur if aid is not rendered immediately. Symptoms: hot dry skin (no sweating), hallucinations, confusion/dizzinesss, slurred speech, throbbing headache, muscle cramps, chills. First Aid: Call 911 immediately. Get to cool environment. Try cooling down by spraying clothes with water, fanning their body. Tips on Preventing these Heat-Related Illnesses: Drink water* - regardless of your activity level - on a hot day. Do NOT wait until you are thirsty you re already down a quart if you re thirsty. AVOID alcoholic and/or drinks with lots of sugar - as they will actually cause you to loose more fluid. (*If you are on Fluid Restrictions consult your health care provider for fluid consumption requirements.) Try and schedule your chores for the morning or evening If you must work on a hot day, take frequent breaks in the shade. Wear light colored loose fitting clothes. Long sleeve shirts will actually keep you cooler in the long run. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. #30 sunblock offers the greatest protection from harmful UV rays. Above 90F electric fans won t prevent heat-related illnesses. Take a cool shower or bath... Or go visit a friend who has air conditioning. If you have an elderly neighbor or someone else at risk, check on them twice a day OFFICE HOURS: Every Tuesday from 7:30am to 11:30am. Call by 9:30 to say that you want to be seen. Unless he hears of a need, Chris will leave on the 10am boat. Lab work is done every Tuesday. Bring your orders and your doctor s fax number to the office when you come. 9 ToCI FireFighter Footnotes th The Public Safety Open House is Sunday 9 August at Noon at the Public Safety Building/Town Office at 192 North Road. Watch for posters around the Island with more information. All open burning fires require a permit. The permit is FREE. Open burning means any type of combustible material ie brush, wood, leaves, etc, that is out of doors in the open. Fires must be attended at ALL TIMES. State law determines if the wind speed is appropriate for burning permits. To get a burning permit call: Dianne Calder at any time Tom Calder at any time The Town Office at during business hours. The first day of school at the Chebeague Island School is Wednesday, September 2. Greely High School Freshmen Orientation is on Thursday, August 27. 16 ToCI Town of Chebeague Island NOTICE FEMA has been developing new floodplain maps for the Town of Chebeague Island. Draft maps will be available for inspection and comment in the Town Office from about August 1 until the deadline for comments on October 1, rate. The old ones have often been criticized as being wrong. Individual property owners and the Town have until October 1 to appeal any inaccuracies in the maps. This requires submitting data that shows the location and degree of the error. If you live on the shore, especially if you have flood insurance, or even if you are just interested, we would very much appreciate your looking at the new draft maps to see if you think they are acc For more information on this process, contact Beth Howe, Chair, Town of Chebeague Island Planning Board: , bethhowe@chebeague.net. Three years have passed and the large balloon payment has been made to the subdivision developer. This means I can operate the farm and, as time goes, on make it a better place, producing more local food to sell in the farm stand. I still have a large bill to pay, but it is in monthly payments to a bank. I have been given some advance money and this will be paid back in time. There has been a fundraiser going on for Secondwind Farm and that has helped greatly in securing this beautiful place. Your contributions have been so generous and kind, especially in these economic times. I believe in this community and town and island. I believe it is our chance and our responsibility to protect and secure this island for the generations of people we do not even know. I believe your help in Secondwind Farm will provide an agricultural experience for the long term on Great Chebeague Island. Thank you! Chuck Varney

YOUTH TENNIS CLINIC every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00 1:00. Ages We will provide instruction, rackets and balls. You do not need to be a member of the club to participate. Everyone is welcome to these events and there is no fee. Our instructor is Julia Middleton. TEEN TIME every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 6:00. This time is reserved for teens who are used to playing full sets of tennis and know how to keep score. We will provide balls but they must bring their own rackets. All are welcome and there is no fee. We hope everyone will enjoy our club. If you are a non-member, please follow the instructions for the guest fees. It is posted on the sign up board that hangs on the fence by the gate. Members please be sure to sign up and pay for your guests. We require that everyone play in shoes designed for soft courts. We work hard to keep our courts in good shape and non-regulation shoes (this even includes flip-flops) will severely tear up our courts. Thank you for respecting this requirement. 23 CIC Chebeague Island Council 501(c)(3) A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Council was formed to promote and assist in the development of activities and projects designed to improve conditions important to the inhabitants of Great Chebeague Island. To that end, the Council publishes the monthly Calendar and administers various funds and programs to which your tax-deductible donations can be designated gency response necklaces. Many of our people have to decide each month whether they can afford their medicine or if they will need their money for heating or food. Ginny Ballard, PA, and Christopher Silva, NP, administer this Fund and obtain the medicines for those who need it. Fuel Assistance Fund This fund provides for the purchase of fuel (K-1, propane, oil, wood, etc). Membership A $12 annual Membership in the CIC goes toward the publishing of the monthly Calendar. Each occupied household on the island receives a copy of the Calendar. Members, when not receiving mail their on-island address, receive their copy via Bulk Mail. To guarantee faster delivery, members may choose first class delivery ($15 for U.S. or $25 for International... postage cost is not deductible). General Fund Non-designated donations go towards the administrative expenses of these additional Council supported efforts and programs: Chebeague Health Center, Chedemption the volunteer staffed bottle and can redemption center at the Transfer Station, and the 4th of July parade and picnic. Samaritan Fund Cynnie s Group Established in 2007 in recognition of Cynnie Sheketoff s commitment to the importance of Hospice education, care and support, Cynnie s Group provides necessary supplies and financial assistance as appropriate.
