1 Provided by the NYU Post-Graduate Medical School 40th Annual Comprehensive Review of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Rusk Rehabilitation Monday-Saturday, March 23-28, 2015 Special One-day Electrodiagnosis Program March 28, 2015 Register online at:
2 40TH ANNUAL COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION COURSE DESCRIPTION This intensive six-day and threeevening review course is designed to examine current practice with emphasis on recent advances in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Ample time is provided for questions throughout the course. One-on-one registrant-faculty practice oral examination will be available for registrants on Tuesday or Thursday evening and a written questions workshop is available on Monday evening. This course also includes talks on the Maintenance of Certification Process, a handson workshop on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Management of Spasticity as well as in addition to the Special One-day Electrodiagnosis Program on Saturday. TARGET AUDIENCE The potential audience includes: 1) Senior Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) resident physicians preparing for Part I (Written) of the Board Certification Examination 2) PM&R physicians in their first year of practice preparing for Part II (Oral) of the Board Certificate Examination 3) Practicing PM&R physicians seeking continuing medical education and a knowledge update 4) Practicing PM&R physicians preparing for their ABPM&R Maintenance of Certification Examination STATEMENT OF NEED Electrodiagnosis is a highly technical skill and there is lack of uniformity in how different practitioners execute it. Based on previous evaluations, there is still a need for more hands on training with EMG, including examinations on Myopathies and Motor Neuron Disease and Radiculopathies. Traumatic Brain Injury is still under recognized, and due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the incidence has increased because of better technology and equipment used by our armed forces. Separately, physiatry has expanded over the past decades to include an interest in Musculoskeletal and sports medicine, including sports-related concussion. Clinicians need to be aware of diagnosis and management of cognitive, somatic, and emotional sequelae in concussed athletes. It is now more common for physiatrists to handle spasticity management using either botulinum toxin injections or ITB pump refilling, as new data is published regarding the effectiveness of these treatments. Younger physiatrists were exposed to hands on training with these treatment options during residency, but older clinicians were not, and need adequate hands-on training in order to properly and effectively manage their patients spasticity. Physiatrists are becoming more established as the expert in the area of Musculoskeletal Disorders and are seeing more patients in need of treatment. There is a need for practicing physiatrists to focus on their diagnostic and treatment skills for this disorder, including understanding the importance of Musculoskeletal ultrasound, including limitations and capabilities of using highresolution, real-time imaging of musculoskeletal features, for diagnostic and interventional procedures. Health care reform underscores a remarkable change in the regulatory landscape in the field of PM&R; physiatrists are held more accountable and expected to understand complexities of navigating health care system, multiple payors, value-based purchasing, and bundling. Additionally, evaluations from the last year s program included requests on more information on maintenance of certification (MOC) as mandated by the American Board of PM&R, as this is an area with which some physiatrists, particularly those away from academia, are struggling.
3 EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: Incorporate evidence-based techniques for performing electrodiagnostic tests into practice Incorporate a diagnostic strategy for traumatic brain injury, based on awareness of high incidence Apply traditional physiatric care regarding traumatic brain injury for assessment and treatment of the concussed athlete Demonstrate knowledge of diagnosis and management of the concussed athlete Demonstrate correct injection and implanting techniques when treating spasticity management with botulinum toxin or use of an intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pump Incorporate best evidence-based clinical guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Musculoskeletal Disorders Evaluate limitations and capabilities of Musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional procedures Incorporate the regulatory changes in PM&R and options for MOC lecture and discussion GENERAL INFORMATION LOCATION NYU Langone Medical Center Smilow Seminar Room 550 First Avenue (31st St.) New York, NY MAILING ADDRESS & CONTACT INFORMATION Registration Office NYU Post-Graduate Medical School 577 First Avenue, Room 125 New York, NY Phone: (212) Fax: (212) CME ACCREDITATION STATEMENT The NYU Post-Graduate Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
