The 17-day Program of Certification NOTE: Part A must be completed first, and Part D completed last. The order of Parts B and C may be taken at the discretion of the course participant. Part A: Lumbar Spine (Days 1-4; Day 1 online component-days 2-4 onsite) Part B: Cervical & Thoracic Spine (Days 5-8; Day 5 online component-days 6-8 onsite) Part C: Advanced Lumbar Spine and Extremities Lower Limb (Days 9-12) Part D: Advanced Cervical and Thoracic Spine and Extremities Upper Limb (Days 13-16) Credentialing Exam (Day 17) There is no formal time span required between courses however it is highly recommended that you allow sufficient time to clinically practice the method and develop experience with more difficult patients. This will help you to prepare for the discussions and topics relating to advanced problem solving, clinical reasoning and technique practice in the next course. Advanced Courses Part E: MDT Advanced Human Extremities (pre-requisite: Part D) MDT Clinical Skills Update (pre-requisite: minimum Part D; the CSU course is not part of the certification program structure) MDT Technique Workshop (pre-requisite: minimum Part D; the Technique Workshop course is not part of the certification program structure) ELIGIBILITY POLICY The Robin McKenzie Institute Canada s mission is to educate all eligible health care professionals in the mechanical assessment and treatment of spinal disorders and to conduct or support research in this area. Eligible health care professionals are those with academic backgrounds that have licensure, certification, or registration by a national or provincial regulatory or certifying organization and so will possess the prerequisite knowledge and skills best understand the principles of the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Please review our eligibility policy poste on our website for additional details and the list of eligible health practitioners that are permitted to attend McKenzie Institute Canada courses. It is not our role as an educational provider to enforce each individual health profession s regulations. All course participants are legally and ethically responsible for reviewing the applicable laws, the Standards of Practice, and the Code of Ethics of their profession to determine whether they may use the information, material and techniques taught in the courses within their professional and provincial jurisdictions. The McKenzie Institute cannot advise a participant as to whether he or she may use the information, material and techniques in the geographic areas in which he or she practices. From a review of appropriate professionals to be considered for enrollment in the MDT Programme of Certification, or parts thereof, the elgibility criteria to apply for the educational programming of The Robin McKenzie Institute (Canada) is as follows :

2 Minimal Criteria to complete Full Program of Certification (Parts A-D and Credentialing Examination): Healthcare practitioners with at least a Bachelors Degree in the field of study AND current licensure in the province of practice, or registry by the appropriate provincial or national regulatory organization. In addition, to take the Credentialing Exam, clinicans must have have completed the four part course series and also must have had at least two years of postgraduate clinical experience. Please refer to our eligibility policy on the website for more details. Minimal Criteria for Parts A and B: Healthcare practitioner with a Degree in the field of study AND current licensure in the province of practice. This primarily refers to Kinesiologists, TRP s (QC)and Athletic Therapists (These clinicians may attend the course if they are currently working with and supervised by a practitioner who has completed at least McKenzie Part A course.). Please refer to our eligibility policy on the website for more details. A final year Physical Therapy student matriculating full-time in the professional phase of an accredited physical therapy program who has successfully completed at least one course in musculoskeletal examination and treatment in the physical therapy curriculum. A letter from the Physical Therapy Program Director or Chair must accompany the Part A course registration to verify the student meets these requirements. Please refer to our eligibility policy on the website for more details. *We expect all participants to be responsible in reviewing their scope of practice, provincial practice act and other applicable national or provincial laws or regulations of their profession to determine to what extent they can utilize certain aspects of the McKenzie Method in their jurisdiction. COURSE DETAILS: PART A MDT of the Lumbar Spine This course begins with a new comprehensive online session, followed by a three day live course focusing on the application of the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy of the lumbar spine. Principle format is lecture, discussion and live patient demonstrations. Introduction and epidemiology Pain and connective tissue properties Mechanical diagnosis: classification and definition of terms Anatomical considerations related to MDT Recurrences and prophylaxis Patient demonstration, analysis and discussion Course Length: 3 days (pre-requisite online component followed by three days onsite typically Friday - Sunday); 26 contact hours Course Fee: $650, McKenzie Institute Canada Membership Rate $585.00, Audit/Retake: $325 PART B MDT of the Cervical & Thoracic Spines Pre-requisite: Completion of Part A or C This course begins with a new comprehensive online session, followed by a three day live course focusing on the application of the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy of the cervical and thoracic spines utilizing the same teaching format as Part A. 3 PART C MDT: Advanced Lumbar Spine & Extremities Lower Limb Pre-requisite: Completion of Parts A and B This course focuses on advanced Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for the lumbar spine and the application of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for the lower limb. Cautions and contraindications Clinician forces and McKenzie s progression of forces concept Evidence base for use of MDT in the upper limb Analyze case studies to determine classification Course Length: 4 days: 28 contact hours [Verify timelines on our website as hours may vary daily.] Describe the three syndromes as they pertain to upper limb Design appropriate patient management programs Application of advanced clinician techniques Course Length: 4 days (four days typically Thursday Sunday or Friday - Monday); 28 contact hours Course Fee: $699.00, McKenzie Institute Canada Membership Rate $629.10, Audit/Retake: $ CREDENTIALING EXAMINATION The attainment of the Credentialing Level status indicates that the clinician has met predetermined requirements established by The McKenzie Institute International (MII) to recognize basic competency in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). The MII Credentialing Examination is the worldwide standard for all branches consisting of multi-method testing with written and practical components designed to assess the clinical knowledge and skills developed by the practitioner throughout the post-graduate course curriculum. Those who pass the exam may use the initials Cert. MDT and are added to the online Provider Locator for those seeking certified MDT providers. The major content areas include: 1. History 2. Examination 3. Conclusion 4. Principle of Treatment 5. Reassessment 6. Prophylaxis 7. Clinician Procedures Eligibility Requirements: Completion of Parts A-D Licensed or Registered practitioner Two years of post-graduate clinical experience Limited Class Size: Each exam is limited to only 25 participants. Applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Completed applications must be received 30 days prior to the posted exam date. All payments are processed 2 weeks prior to the scheduled exam date. 4 ADVANCED COURSES (Pre-requisite: Completion of Part D; not part of the Credentialing process) PART E MDT of Advanced Extremities The intensive, advanced two-day course expands McKenzie s principles to the assessment and treatment of the extremities. It consists of lecture, analysis of case studies, clinical reasoning, problem solving and heavy emphasis on assessment and treatment of patients a trademark of McKenzie courses. The Review of basic principles and epidemiology Anatomy/Biomechanics and physiology extremities Pathophysiology Contraindications and precautions Assessment of the extremity patient Treatment procedures Treatment of the three syndromes Reassessment and outcome predictors The prophylactic concept Practical sessions Course Length: 2 days (typically Saturday Sunday); 12 contact hours Course Fee: $400.00, McKenzie Institute Canada Membership Rate $360.00, Audit/Retake: $ MDT Clinical Skills Update Pre-requisite: Completion of Parts A, B, C and D This course focuses on review and update of the principles and application of the McKenzie theory and techniques of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. The course will include more intensive clinical reasoning and problem solving through a high volume of patient demonstrations and case study analysis involving all regions of the spine, as well as the extremities. More effectively apply MDT to spine or extremity patients Further cultivate patient interviewing skills Distinguish between McKenzie syndromes in challenging patients Hone technique skills with workshops designed to challenge Course Length: 2 days (typically Saturday - Sunday); 15 contact hours Course Fee: $495.00, McKenzie Institute Canada Membership Rate $445.50, Audit/Retake: Not applicable More readily identify when external forces or external stabilization is required for the resolution of symptoms Hone ability to teach patients to maintain treatment goals MDT Technique Workshop Pre-requisite: Completion of Parts D or higher This advanced 1 day workshop has been designed to allow Level D or higher attendees the opportunity to refine their technique skills and improve their clinical reasoning using a combination of role playing and case studies. This one day course will include an open forum period that will encourage attendees to discuss real case issues and possible solutions. Each major subdivision of the course has very specific educational objectives that will reinforce the knowledge and skills which will further refine your own abilities in applying these principles. Unlike other MDT courses, there will not be any patient demonstrations during 1 day workshop. An effort will be made to schedule these workshops regionally on an annual basis, except during a MI Americas region conference year. The Course Outline may include any combination of: Practice of techniques Refine patient interview and compliance strategies Case studies and role playing Open forum discussion of issues clinicians face applying MDT Patient assessments and problem solving What s new in MDT latest research and trends. Course Length: 1 day (typically Saturday or Sunday); 8.5 contact hours The schedule may vary somewhat depending on course location. The exact hours will be provided with your course confirmation letter, travel and accommodation information. 5 PREPARING FOR COURSES You may participate in the online McKenzie Overview Course currently free of charge. It is strongly recommended that you read Robin McKenzie s three textbooks The Lumbar Spine, The Cervical and Thoracic Spine, and The Human Extremities: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (by Robin McKenzie and Stephen May). To order any of these books, or for more information, contact OPTP directly at or visit REGISTRATION DETAILS *** Become a Member of MI-Canada and get 10% off course fees *** The course fees include: A copy of the book Treat Your Own Back by Robin McKenzie and a lumbar roll (Part A) A copy of the book Treat Your Own Neck by Robin McKenzie and a cervical roll (Part B) A copy of the book Treat Your Own Knee by Robin McKenzie (Part C) A copy of the book Treat Your Own Shoulder by Robin McKenzie (Part D) McKenzie technique assessment forms and comprehensive course manuals Certificate of completion Morning and afternoon refreshment breaks (lunch on your own) Payment must accompany your registration form. You may pay by cheque or credit card. If this is not possible for employer paid fees, a letter of verification from the company must be provided. A credit card is required to hold a spot when payment is pending. All fees MUST be received at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the course. We accept post-dated cheques (please or call to verify the payment date for the course) or the following credit cards: MasterCard or VISA. We will not bill / invoice for registration unless specifically requested through the branch office. GROUP DISCOUNTS: For groups of 3 or more from the same organization, a 10% discount is available on tuition for the group participants attending the same Part in the course series. Group rates only apply to NEW registrations. Retroactive group rates are not possible. In order to get a group rate 3 or more people must register at the same time. The registration forms must be faxed in together or you can register online as long as you provide us with an advance list of all the first and last names, for all the members in your group. This list must be submitted in advance of registering online to the branch office. Online group registrations must also be completed by all group participants on the exact same day. If you select to register online, you will need to register at the regular course rate. The system records your payment information but it does not charge your card. Once your registration has been received by the branch office, it will be adjusted to reflect the group rate. Once the registration process is complete, you will receive an confirming your place on the course at the group rate. The group course registration from can be found online under the RESOURCE CENTRE. Remember if you are register online the list of group names MUST be sent via to the branch office in advance of registering and all group members must register on the EXACT SAME DAY. Group Rates cannot be combined with Audit Rates. AUDIT FEE: Need a refresher? For only 50% of the course tuition, a limited number of spots on each course (excluding CSU & Technique Workshops) are reserved for anyone who would like to retake a course. Proof of when the course was previously attended may be required. Group rates cannot be combined with Audit Rates. CANCELLATION/HOLD POLICY: Every attempt is made to offer our programs as publicized. However, MIC reserves the right to adjust program dates, location, times, faculty, etc. in order to accommodate unforeseen circumstances; we will only notify advanced registrants of any program changes. MIC is not responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to such adjustments. MIC further reserves the right to cancel a course due to insufficient enrolment or unforeseen circumstances up to two weeks prior to the start of the course. If the course is cancelled by the McKenzie Institute, a full refund will be given or funds can be transferred to another course. MIC is not responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to such cancellations. Parts A & B: Course participants must cancel in writing. Course cancellations are subject to the following cancellation penalties: A cancellation received after the "Payment Date" is subject to a $ penalty. A one-time transfer to another course will be permitted without penalty however any future cancellations of that course will be subject to the original penalty. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received within 2 weeks of the course date. All course transfers must take place within 1 year of the original course date.

6 Additional Note for Parts A and B: If the online component has not been completed 2 days before the course start date, or the test has not been taken, retaken, or a successful pass on the test has not been achieved two (2) days before the start date, the full cancellation policy terms will apply. Continued access to the online component will be denied after the 14-day post-course agreement. If eligible to transfer registration to a future course, online access will be reactivated only when an official transfer request to a new live course is provided in writing and acknowledged by the Institute. The new course date will prompt re-entry into online/test for our standard designated time period. Parts C or D courses: Course participants must cancel in writing. Course cancellations are subject to the following cancellation penalties: A cancellation received after the "Payment Date" is subject to a $ penalty. A one-time transfer to another course will be permitted without penalty however any future cancellations of that course will be subject to the original penalty. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received within 2 weeks of the course date. All course transfers must take place within 1 year of the original course date. MDT Advanced Extremity and Clinical Skills Update courses: Course participants must cancel in writing. Course cancellations are subject to the following cancellation penalties: A cancellation received after the "Payment Date" is subject to a $ penalty. Due to the limited number of times per year we run these special advanced courses, the cancellation penalty is not transferable to another course. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received within 2 weeks of the course date. Transferring To Another Course: All transfer requests must be received in writing within 1 year of the original course date or the course transfer option will be forfeited. Cancellations that take place on a course transfer are subject to the penalty of the original course. Please note that your selected course may not be scheduled in the original course location city, within a 1 year period. Transfers may be extended if a similar part course has not been offered in your province within a 1 year period. The free transfer policy is in place to help the course participant avoid cancellation penalties. Anyone that does not take advantage of the free course transfer will be subject to the original course penalties. Course transfers are subject to availability. Credentialling Exam Cancellation Policy: Exam participants must cancel in writing. Exam cancellations are subject to the following cancellation penalties: A cancellation received after the "Payment Date" is subject to a $75.00 penalty. Refunds will not be given for cancellations received within 2 weeks of the exam date. A transfer to another scheduled exam will be permitted however any future cancellations will be subject to the original penalty. All exam transfers must take place within 1 year of the original exam date. Cancellations that take place on an exam transfer are subject to the penalty of the original exam. Transferring To Another Exam: All transfer requests must be received in writing within 1 year of the original course date or the exam transfer option will be forfeited. Please note that a Credentialling Exam may not be scheduled in the original course location city, within a 1 year period. Transfers may be extended if an exam has not been offered in the original exam scheduled province within a 1 year period. The free transfer policy is in place to help the exam participant avoid cancellation penalties. Anyone that does not take advantage of the free exam transfer will be subject to the original penalties. Transfers extensions are at the sole discretion of The Robin McKenzie Institute Canada. MISSED HOURS ON A COURSE: When a participant misses a day(s), or any portion of a day throughout the course, under no circumstances will a course certificate be provided to that participant. The student will not be eligible to continue with the next Part of the MDT Program of Certification until the previous course requirement has been completed. The participant can complete the day(s) or hours missed within one year of the course dates at no additional fee and then will receive the certificate for full course credit. If the participant does not complete this requirement within one year, he or she will be required to pay fees as follows: Less than half the course missed - pay the audit fee / Half or more of the course missed - pay in full COMMERCIAL SUPPORT POLICY: The Robin McKenzie Institute Canada does not engage in commercial support for our education programs. Each instructor is required to sign a conflict of interest statement. Any potential conflict of interest including affiliations or financial interest that may affect the instructor s presentation will be disclosed in the course syllabus.
