4 Who was Sir John Monash? Sir John Monash was an Australian leader, statesman and nation-builder who contributed to almost every level of Australian life. As well as a long and distinguished military career, Sir John was a renowned engineer and public administrator. He also features on the Australian $100 note. He was a man who used education to turn his natural talent into ability, allowing him to realise his daring ambitions. Not only do we carry Sir John s name, we also take inspiration from his philosophy of life. Although Monash University is named after an individual, the University is a public government-funded and accredited institution. Our motto, Ancora Imparo ( I am still learning ), captures the essence of his approach to life. Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community. 6 Our campuses Monash University has five Australian campuses, as well as campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, a Joint Graduate School in China, a learning centre in Prato, Italy and a research centre in Mumbai, India. We also have a network of university partners across the globe, including the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Transport to Monash MONASH shuttle bus During the academic year, a free Monash Shuttle bus service runs in both directions from: Clayton to Berwick Clayton to Caulfield Clayton to Peninsula Frankston Station to Peninsula. After-hours buses Clayton and Caulfield buses run to designated stops on Monday to Friday evenings from 5.30pm until late. This is a free service for current Monash students. Monash Rideshare is a carpooling scheme for students and staff travelling to Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula. Car poolers are eligible for free parking. 7 Parkville Drive time: 3 km, approx. 10 minutes Located three kilometres north of Melbourne s city centre, the Parkville campus houses the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with first-class teaching facilities, innovative learning spaces and research laboratories. The campus is home to the Centre for Medication Use and Safety and the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which comprises the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia. Parkville Caulfield Drive time: 9 km, approx. 20 minutes 5km 5km Caulfield Clayton Caulfield is the second-largest Monash campus, with about 13,000 students. It s the main centre for the faculties of Business and Economics, Art Design & Architecture, and Information Technology. Caulfield is nine kilometres from the Melbourne city centre and adjacent to Caulfield train station. The campus has a gym, library and cafes, and is close to several shopping precincts. 20km Berwick Clayton Drive time: 20 km, approx. 25 minutes Clayton is the largest of Monash s campuses. It combines a vibrant research, technology and manufacturing precinct with first-rate sporting facilities, shops, a student centre, libraries, a post office, banks, medical services and religious centres. The campus can be reached by public transport utilising an extensive bus network combined with train stations in surrounding suburbs. Peninsula Berwick Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes Berwick is a small, friendly campus with about 2000 students approximately 40 minutes south east of Melbourne. It s a five-minute walk from the heart of Berwick s specialty shops, cafes and business services. Berwick campus is a centre for the Faculty of Education. 50km Our five Melbourne campuses offer a range of facilities and lifestyles Peninsula Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes The Peninsula campus is about 40 minutes south of Melbourne. It is a centre for nursing and paramedic training and early childhood and primary education, and is also being developed as a centre for health science research. There is a bus connection to Frankston train station, and a free shuttle bus runs between Peninsula and Clayton campuses. 8 A guide to choice At Monash, we let you choose how you study. We provide a range of courses that provide different professional outcomes. We ll be there to guide you through all the possibilities, so you can graduate with an internationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere. Flexibility and choice d for EARLY specialisation Range of majors A comprehensive course is flexible and evolves as your interests develop in particular directions. You can start with units from a range of areas of study and through your choices progressively focus on one or two majors and minors. Monash guides you through this process so you graduate with a degree that combines breadth and depth of expertise relevant to your interests and aspirations. Your degree may show your majors. A specialist course offers you focus and depth through specialisation in your area of interest from the start of your studies. Some undergraduate specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practise in a specified regulated profession upon graduation. Others concentrate on developing particular expertise but may be applicable to a broader range of career. You will graduate with a degree that reflects your chosen specialisation. 9 Two courses studied concurrently Highly structured Double degree courses A double degree course lets you gain skills in two different areas of interest, such as arts and law or science and engineering. This lets you tailor your qualification to fit your diverse interests and talents and doubles your when you graduate. Double degree courses can take up to two years less than if you took the two courses one after the other. This is because the electives from each degree course count towards the other. You will graduate with two distinct degrees. entry graduate course Some courses at Monash prepare you for direct entry to a profession upon graduation with a bachelor s degree. However, you can also choose a professional entry postgraduate course after you have completed your bachelor s degree that also prepares you for entry to a regulated profession. These are usually master s degrees. Fields where we offer professional entry courses for graduates include architecture, law, accounting, teaching and nursing. In some professional fields, including law, teaching and nursing, we offer you both. See page 18 for more information on postgraduate. 10 Where Monash can take you In addition to meeting like-minded individuals, the Ancora Imparo program allows me to learn about leadership from an Australian point of view, broadening my understanding about the world. The program will also provide me with a sense of personal satisfaction as it encourages participants to share the training and experience gained with the whole community. Harin Tennakoon, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Engineering Get more than a degree While your degree tells an employer what you know, the experiences you have during and after your degree give them clues as to who you are. Employers look for a range of things in new graduates: practical experience, people skills, communication skills, problem-solving, adaptability, and the potential for leadership. Monash offers a range of opportunities to start building your career before you graduate, boosting your appeal to employers. Some of them offer industry-based learning built into the course. These help you to put what you have learned into action. Others are wider in focus and help you to develop the leadership skills, communication skills and problem-solving skills that employers value. 8

11 Industry-based learning programs matched to your study recognition for your career For some careers you must register with a professional organisation before you can practise. For instance, completion of the Bachelor of Nursing means you are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a nurse. In most of these courses, practical experience is a significant part of your course. Courses that require you to undertake placements in the workforce include teaching, nursing, medicine, pharmacy and law. Industry-based learning Many of our courses offer industry-based learning within the degree. Options vary from semester-long subjects to facilitated internships and work experience programs. This experience will help you to understand where your strengths lie and give you insight into specialisations you may want to pursue. Conditions apply. Leadership programs Along with knowledge, problem-solving and communication, leadership is one of the most important skills you can learn. We offer a range of student leadership programs to help you develop your ability to lead and inspire others. Ancora Imparo The Vice-Chancellor s Ancora Imparo program is open to first-year students for participation in second year. Successful students are selected based on a 500-word essay on leadership. Over the course of the year they participate in a three-day residential workshop, forums and presentations, hearing from Australia s most inspired leaders on the challenges facing effective leaders. Other leadership programs There are many other leadership programs run by faculties. Some programs are by invitation, based on your academic achievements, and others are open for application. A full range of leadership programs can be found at: monash.edu.au/about/leadership/student-programs Expand your international experience An international study experience shows employers that you are adaptable, resourceful and independently motivated. Your exposure to other cultures often broadens your capacity for creative problem solving. As an international student, you can expand on your Australian study experience by taking an exchange, study tour, or international internship in another country. Monash has 130 partner universities in 30 countries, giving you the opportunity to study in USA, UK, Europe, China or Latin America. An intercampus exchange to our Malaysian or South Africa campus means you remain enrolled and receive credit for your overseas study towards your Monash degree. China exchange program Gain experience in the economic powerhouse of China through an exchange with some of China s most prestigious universities: Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology and more. International internships to build your work experience: The CRCC Asia Internship China Internship Program is designed for students and graduates to complete a one to three-month internship in Beijing, Sanya, Shanghai or Shenzhen. Programs start every month all year round. AIESEC Monash, an organisation run by students and recent graduates, offers Go Intern to students in their penultimate year. The Go Intern programs are highly competitive internships in areas of project management, marketing and human resources. Businesses range from large multi-nationals to small and medium enterprises. For 2013, AIESEC Monash offers internships specialising in Marketing and IT. A study tour or conference broaden your horizons by going on a faculty study tour in Italy, Middle East or Asia. 12 Scholarships for exceptionally high achievers At Monash, we believe in unlocking students potential to make a difference in the world. Watch Serena share her scholarship story online at mona.sh/tbhvm Monash International Leadership Scholarship The scholarship offers 100 per cent course fee remission to high academic achievers who are able to demonstrate their potential to be an ambassador for the University. The scholarship is open to prospective students who wish to study undergraduate or postgraduate coursework programs. Applicants are also assessed on a separate scholarship application containing a personal statement that must be submitted once they have received a full unconditional Monash course offer. Some courses and qualifications are excluded. Monash International Merit Scholarship This scholarship is offered to high achieving prospective and current international undergraduate or postgraduate students who achieve within the top 5 per cent of an international qualification (e.g. A Levels). The scholarship provides A$10,000 per 48 credit points (up to A$50,000) for the duration of the degree. Applicants are also assessed based on a separate scholarship application containing a personal statement that must be submitted once they have received a full unconditional Monash course offer. For information about scholarships for overseas international students visit monash.edu/new-scholarships Monash International Scholarship for Excellence The Monash International Scholarship for Excellence is offered to the top 10 international undergraduate students who achieve an of 98 or above through IB or Australian year 12 systems in The scholarship provides A$10,000 per 48 credit points (up to A$50,000) for the duration of the degree. No applications are necessary. Students are automatically assessed for this scholarship. 13 Helping you get into Monash To succeed at Monash, you will need excellent English language skills. The Monash University English Language Centre offers three different programs, all designed to prepare you for academic study. When you apply, we will assess your present skills and place you in the best course for your level. Monash English (ME) a program with flexible duration designed to build on students current English proficiency and prepare them for entry into MEB or University. Monash English Bridging (MEB)* a 10 or 15-week program for students who have met the academic requirements for Monash but have narrowly missed the English language requirements. MEB prepares students for the English and academic expectations of Monash. Introductory Academic Program (IAP) a five-week program for students who have received a full offer to Monash University. IAP is focused on further enhancing the study skills required for success at Monash. 16 Our graduates are leaders Tim Costello AO Bachelor of Jurisprudence, 1976, Bachelor of Laws, 1978 and Diploma of Education, 1979 Tim has been the CEO of Australia's largest aid and development organisation, World Vision, since He is a leading spokesperson on issues relating to Australia's response to global poverty and issues relating to social justice, social inclusion and strengthening communities. Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, 1987 Dr Kamarulzaman has dedicated her career to the prevention, treatment and research of infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS. In 2007, she established the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA), one of the few dedicated HIV research centres in the region. She is also President of the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC). Vice President Boediono Master of Economics, 1972 and Doctor of Laws (Honorary), 2013 A renowned Economist and fiscal leader, Dr Boediono is one of Asia s foremost authorities on financial governance. As Minister for Finance in the Sukarnoputri government ( ) he presided over the rehabilitation of the Indonesian economy in the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis. He then became governor of the central Bank of Indonesia before resigning this post in 2009 to become the Vice President of Indonesia. James Lam Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, 2004 James is the jet-setting host of one of China s most popular television programs and the founder of burgeoning clothier Michelozzo. Splitting his time between Melbourne and Beijing, James also finds time to volunteer as part of the Monash Global Contacts Program and contributes to the Monash University Achieving Potential Fund, which provides scholarships and bursaries to Monash students to allow them to achieve their potential. Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar Doctor of Philosophy in Arts, 1990 Dr Anwar is currently Research Professor at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Chairman of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights The Habibie Center and Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs to the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. She has long been active in promoting equal opportunities for women in Indonesia and greater representation for women in government and politics, and was voted one of Indonesia s most powerful women in Hubert Sie Bachelor of Technology (Computer Science), 2003 While studying at Monash, Hubert founded electronics e-retailer CrazySales.com.au. Within five years of establishment, he went from selling his products at Sunday markets to running a company with over 100 employees in two countries and a turnover of over A$25 million. 14

17 Education goes beyond the classroom Clubs and societies Over 100 student-run clubs and societies run activities, events, competitions, productions, get-togethers, seminars, camps, conferences and more for over 10,000 student members. There is a wide variety of clubs on offer: academic, cultural, spiritual and special interest clubs. While helping others, you get some real life experience to build your confidence and resilience, to lead and organise, to identify issues and resolve problems, and a chance to make a difference in someone s life. We want you to get the most out of your time at Monash. That s why we offer a wide range of services that support you before and after you arrive in Australia. Living close to campus facilities ensures easy access to classes, libraries and university life. It s also a great way to concentrate on your studies, and you re part of a community of people also committed to their courses. You become a part of the programs, activities and pastoral care we offer. It is a secure environment created by a 24-hour Monash security presence, and the costs are highly competitive with all rooms fully furnished. Places fill quickly, so you should apply for accommodation as early as possible at monash.edu/mrs Off-campus accommodation The MRS off-campus accommodation service provides guidance, information, resources and advocacy to students of Monash University. The service assists with accommodation-related matters prior to arrival and during the entire time at Monash University. We can help every step of the way on: how to source appropriate accommodation tenancy legal information on what tenants need to know prior to and during their tenancy For more go to: mrs.monash.edu/offcampus support with any difficulties experienced with landlords, agents or housemates other accommodation-related matters. All on-campus accommodation includes a communal kitchen and free laundry facilities. Cost of living It is a good idea to plan and prepare a budget before you arrive in Australia. Your tuition and study fees do not include personal costs such as accommodation, food, and other things you will need. These costs can add up to approximately A$22,900+ per year.
