This document provides description on most common and demonstrative settings for Ontrack PowerControls and ActiveImage Protector, which should not be applicable to a variety of system environment and operational procedures. You should make your own independent evaluation before you implement, use and operate the programs in your system environment. This document is intended for system engineers who started with system design and implementation, system administrators who manage computing environment and maintenance staff who perform system maintenance. The description in this document is provided on premises that the readers are familiar with Exchange Server 2003, 2008, 2010, 2013 and computer savvy. The description in this document is limited to the minimum required for the operation. For further detailed information, please refer to the manuals. The settings configured on the screen shots of the program s dialogs are dummy sample and not based on the real case. 3

5 1. Outline ActiveImage Protector (hereinafter AIP ), imaging backup software, is used to back up the database on Exchange server. Ontrack PowerControls (hereinafter OPC ) refers to the respective mailbox data and enables to restore mails or Outlook PST files. Backu p Exch ang e Server Mou n t th e b acku p im ag e Backu p I m ag e 1.1 Operation Steps You need to go through the following three steps of operating procedures from backup task execution by AIP to restoration of mails by OPC. 1) Back up Exchange server by using AIP The use of Scheduled Backup feature of AIP enables you to regularly back up Exchange server. 2) Mount backup image by using AIP Should you need to restore mails, Mount Image feature of AIP is used. 3) Restore mail messages by using OPC OPC is used to search mails of the respective accounts on the mounted drive and restore them. 5

7 2. Backup Exchange Server 1. Install AIP on Exchange Server. 2. Select [Create Backup Image File] from the menu and launch the wizard in AIP. *When Windows Server 2008 R2 or later is installed on a clean disk with no existing partitions, it creates a system reserved partition of a few hundred MB at the beginning of the disk. Please make sure this space is included in backup source. 6

8 3. Select storage destination to save image files You are recommended to specify a network shared folder in view of a system failure to be caused by server crash, etc. 4. Image Option Please configure the option settings. For advanced configuration, please select [Advanced Setting]. 5. Select Backup Type 7

9 Scheduled Backup is selected and you need to configure the schedule settings. 3. Mount Backup Image 1. Mount Image Log in Exchange server to mount the image created on the date / time you want to restore. 8

10 2. Select Image Select the image created on the date / time you want to restore. 3. Select Volume Select the volume which the database for Exchange server is located. Please select the drive letter to be allocated to the volume. 4. Image is mounted 9

11 Please make sure that the mounted dive is shared to browse from OPC on client PC. 4. Operating procedures on OPC 4.1 Source / Target Selection 1. Select Source 10

12 Click on [Open Source] icon on OPC console and the above [Source Selection] window is displayed. EDB Path --- Click on [Browse] button to select the drive shared according to the procedures of 3. Mount Backup Image and select the database. 2. Select Target Click on [Open Target] icon on OPC console and the above [Target Selection] window is displayed. Please configure the settings as required. 4.2 Preparation You need to have access permission for mailbox. If you establish connection to OPC without full access permission, you shall not be able to access mailbox. 11

13 If you encounter this problem, please restart Exchange Information Stores service. Without full access permission, you cannot access mailbox. Use Exchange Management Console to grant administrative permission. 12

15 4.3 Restore Messages 1. Copy Backup Data Upper pane: Mailbox and mail items in EDB in backup image file Lower pane: Mailbox on Exchange server *Since the above mails were sent via auto mail transmission tool, its subject is specified with randomly selected alphanumeric letters. Right-click on the mail item to restore and select [Copy] from the context menu. You can select Inbox folder to copy. For more detailed procedures, please refer to OPC User Guide. 14

16 2. Paste the mail item to Inbox folder on Exchange server. Right-click on Inbox folder and select [Paste] in context menu. 15

17 3. Successfully completed to restore the mail item. The mail item is now restored back to Inbox folder on Exchange server. [Create Date] indicates the date and time the mail item was pasted to the Inbox folder on Exchange server. The receiving date / time is inherited to Outlook. View the mail messages on Outlook 16

18 Launch Outlook and make sure that the mail item is restored back to Inbox folder. 5. Appendix: How to use Image Mount Tool Image Mount Tool is available from the following site to facilitate the operation described in 3.Mount Backup Image. Please download the tool to a location on Exchange server. Required Software: ActiveImage Protector 3.5 *The Image Mount Tool does not behave properly due to a bug in 3.5SP6M2. Download Site: ftp://ftp.netjapan.co.jp/aip/imagemounttool.zip 1) Operating Procedures Select an image file 17

19 If the image file is located in network shared folder, the following dialog is displayed for user authentication. The following window is displayed to enter the volume number to mount. 18

20 The settings are configured to mount the image and share the drive. Explorer is automatically launched. Drive P is mounted and shared. 19

21 2) OPC post-restoration operating procedures Go to [Sharing] tab on [Property] window of the mounted drive. Click on [Advanced Setting] to display the following window and configure the advanced sharing settings. 20

22 Disable [Share this folder] option. Right-click on the mounted drive to dismount the drive. 21

23 The following dialog is displayed. Disable [Force unmount even if in use] option and click on [OK] button. 22
