Therefore beginning in July a sign-up sheet will be provided in the vestibule of the church for those who wish to insure that someone is always present during the exposition. If however, suitable signups are not experienced it may be necessary to have this beautiful adoration experience stopped. 5 PAGE 5 Religious Ed/ Youth Ministry News : RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Our Religious Education classes have come to an end for the school year, and we extend a special thank you to the many volunteers who have made it all possible by sharing their time, talents, and love of God with the youth of our parish. We have been blessed by their dedication, loyalty, and kindness. They have shown what it means to be a true Christian, by responding to the call to bring God s love and good news to our youth. Without their help we could not have survived! Thank you for blessing our parish with your ministry. If you would like to volunteer for this very important ministry, please contact the Religious Education Office at We also would like to extend our thanks to the parents/guardians for allowing us the opportunity to work with you as a partner in the faith formation of your children. 6 Readings for the Week... PAGE 6 TODAY S READINGS First Reading God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Vigil: Acts 3:1-10; Ps 19:2-5; Gal 1:11-20; Jn 21:15-19 Day: Acts 12:1-11; Ps 34:2-9; 2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18; Mt 16:13-19 Tuesday: Gn 19:15-29; Ps 26:2-3, 9-12; Mt 8:23-27 Wednesday: Gn 21:5, 8-20a; Ps 34:7-8, 10-13; Mt 8:28-34 Thursday: Gn 22:1b-19; Ps 115:1-6, 8-9; Mt 9:1-8 Friday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc-2; Jn 20:24-29 Saturday: Gn 27:1-5, 15-29; Ps 135:1b-6; Mt 9:14-17; or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass For the Country or a City, nos , or For Peace and Justice, nos Sunday: Ez 2:2-5; Ps 123:1-4; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mk 6:1-6a THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, though he was rich, for your sake he became poor (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Ss. Peter and Paul Tuesday: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church Wednesday: Blessed Junípero Serra; Canada Day Friday: St. Thomas; First Friday Saturday: Independence Day; First Saturday; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the Wife of Bath, by this telling remark: Husbands at church door she had five. Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. Rev. 7 PAGE 7 Church News cont: DID YOU KNOW? By teaching total body safety we further efforts to stop abuse Parents and caregivers should stress that a child s entire body is private and be watchful of adults who might be grooming a child by constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A child will often tell a parent he or she does not want to hug or kiss someone and parents should listen and respect their wishes. By teaching total body safety to adults, children, and young people, we are furthering our efforts to stop abuse and to make the world a safer place for all of God s children. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR DO NOT LEAVE IN PEW Dear Friends, We are blessed to live in a beautiful community and our two local cities of Covina and West Covina are safe neighborhoods with little crime and good neighbors. However there are always a few problems; because of that sad reality I must remind you to: Please NEVER leave any valuables visible in your car and NEVER let anyone see you storing them under your seat or in the trunk for example (store them safely out of site before you leave home). And please NEVER leave your purse or any valuables in the pews even when you come up for Communion. During a recent two month period: we had one report of a lady who left her purse in the pew during Communion, only to return and find it missing. Also during the same period a car was broken into (window shattered) and a lap top taken just minutes after the driver hid it under the seat. Please be very careful here & everywhere. God bless you. Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: Señor, tú sabes que te quiero. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
