2 OBJECTIVE Present a short overview of the Aerospace Research capabilities of Universities, Research Centres and Industries present in the Campania Region. Give evidence of a strategic research police decision to try to integrate these institutions and their capabilities and resources, in order to carry on large research projects in a joint, coordinated and efficient approach.

4 INTRODUCTION (1/3) Campania Region is a fertile environment to develop a successful integrated system for Aerospace R&D, thanks to: Proficiencies of universities and public research centres; Experience and skills of industrial research centres; Many and remarkable cooperation with some of the most important international academic institution as Penn State, Stanford, Georgia Tech, MIT, Delft, Cranfield, KTH, Imperial College, etc.; Public and private funding to support both research activities and the creation of new entrepreneurial initiatives (Campania Region invests in R&D 2,5% of its gross regional product); The local government which is strongly engaged in providing the best environmental and infrastructural conditions for new enterprises.

11 AEROSPACE RESEARCH CENTRES In Campania Region different research center that focus their activity in the Aerospace sector are active, between the other, of relevance are: CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre MARS - Microgravity Advanced Research and Support Centre CNR IREA - IMCB : National Research Centres CORISTA Advanced tele-probes research Consortium MARSec - Mediterranean Agency for Remote Sensing and environmental control. Technological and Scientific Parks Technapoli Naples and Caserta s Scientific and Technological Parks Salerno and Campania outback s Scientific and Technological Parks ALENIA AERONAUTICA and other Aerospace Industries have also relevant research capabilities in terms of Laboratories and Human resources

12 AEROSPACE RESEARCH CENTRES CIRA-Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (Italian Aerospace Research Centre ) was established in July CIRA is a shareholders' consortium with a public-owned majority: the State, through the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - National Research Council (CNR), have held, since 1998, the majority of the share capital, to which the Campania Region and the main Italian aerospace industries also participate. The joint public-private participation has made CIRA's objectives consistent with national strategic guidelines and the needs of industry, thereby contributing to Italy's social and economic development. The headquarters and operational facilities of CIRA are located in Capua, approximately 50 km north of Naples.

13 AEROSPACE RESEARCH CENTRES According to the mission which has been given, CIRA has given itself the objectives of : Becoming a centre of excellence in space and aeronautic disciplines with theoretical and experimental capabilities; Promoting training and knowledge of the aerospace sector; Acquiring and transferring know-how for the improvement of the competitiveness of existing industries and for creating new ones.

14 INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR AEROSPACE RESEARCH In 2001 with the personal involvement of Prof. L. Nicolais, Campania Region Minister for Research and University, now Minister for Innovation in Italian Government, the idea to organize sinergically the research resources available in the Campania region in order to face present and future challenges in the aerospace fields, was started. After two years of preparation work, the CAMPANIA AEROSPACE RESEARCH NETWORK (CARN) was established ed many activities and project were carriedout. Now the idea of integrated approach is very well present and many other initiatives can be reconducted (see after) at that initial idea. CAMPANIA AEROSPACE RESEARCH NETWORK Virtual network joins intellectual, scientific and business resources for the coordination of the Regional Research Plan. Directly involves enterprises in the planning and implementation process and fosters the establishment of knowledge-based companies Integrates pre-competitive research activities focusing on development, and provide high quality training activities in conjunction with other training institutions.

17 INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR AEROSPACE RESEARCH TEST S.c.a.r.l. Technology Environment Safety Transport TEST S.c.a.r.l. is a limited liability consortium company, which is in charge of operating the Center of Competence for Transport Systems of the Campania Region (Italy). The Center of Competence was established in the course of a three year project co-financed with the European Structural Regional Funds through the Regional Operative Program 2000/2006, aimed at realizing a regional network of Research resources (laboratories and competences) intended to integrate the relevant research offer, enable the qualification of advanced transport systems and satisfy the innovation demand of the transportation industry. The main challenges addressed by the Centre of Competence are the reduction of environmental pollution, the transport safety, and the transport systems efficiency.

20 INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR AEROSPACE RESEARCH IMAST: A Technological District The Technology District promotes an R&D system in the field of polymers and composites engineering in Campania. It was created in 2003 by an Agreement between the Italian Ministry of Research and the Campania Region Government. The main targets are: To play a leading role at national level in the field of materials engineering and their industrial application, through the cooperation between the academic world and companies; To speed up the technology innovation of the region Campania industrial sector.

IMAST focuses its research activities on the engineering of the polymeric and composite materials. The application fields are: Aeronautics/aerospace Automotive Biomedical sector Polymeric electronics Naval Buildings IMAST, between the others, has started the project in Aerospace field: ARCA-Optimization of the acoustic characteristics of aeronautical composite materials

28 CAPABILITIES and CURRENT and FUTURE LARGE RESEARCH PROJECTS "CLEAN SKY" Aeronautics & Air Transport JTI Regional Aircraft Platform Leaded by Alenia Aeronautica The Green Regional Aircraft Platform will substantially contribute to a greener environment reducing emissions and noise with technological solutions specifically tailored to regional aircraft (low weight low noise configurations). Possible contribution by Campania and Piemonte Regions in a Joint Coordinated Proposal

29 Conclusions All the given information about the Campania aerospace sectors, regarding the integrated system of research in the Aerospace field, outlines a technologic and productive potential which, with the support of the local Institutions, of the Italian Government and of the European Commission, will contribute significantly to the Lisbon strategy in one of the strategic sectors in which Europe has already shown to compete successfully in the global market
