2 ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING A. Overview The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential. Course work includes and builds upon the domains of healthcare, nursing practice, and the holistic individual. Content emphasizes the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing safe, individualized care while employing evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities. B. To be eligible to apply to the ADN program the following criteria must be met before December 31, 2013: 1. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at current institution (college or high school). GPA must be maintained until classes begin in August Complete or test out of ENG 095, or have credit for an approved college level English course. Course grade must be C or higher. 3. Complete or test out of MAT 070 or DMA 050 or have credit for an approved college level Math course. Course grade must be C or higher. 4. Complete the National League for Nursing Pre Admission Examination for RNs (NLN PAX-RN) achieving the following minimum scores (students are not required to be enrolled as a BCC student before taking the examination, nor are there any course requirements). Fee is $35. A composite score of 60 th percentile rank or greater. A minimum score of 45 th percentile rank on each of three sections (verbal, math, and science). BCC will adhere to the NLN PAX no-show/late arrival policy. Student s requiring ADA special testing accommodations are responsible for contacting the BCC ADA office 15 days prior to taking the PAX examination in order to receive approval from the NLN. Only the NLN may grant final approval. Please Note: On test day, the scores you receive are raw scores and percent correct responses. These are NOT the scores used in determining admission to the ADN program. Instead, percentile rank scores are used. These will be available online at the NLN webpage (where you registered), usually within 2-weeks of taking the test. Please be sure to use these scores to determine your eligibility to apply to the program. If you have problems accessing your scores (e.g. forgotten password, etc.), contact the NLN at Neither Student Services nor the ADN programs are able to assist you with this issue. The test will be given on several dates between May and December For dates, times, and instructions on how to register for the examination, please review the information under H. Pre-Entrance Examination Registration Instructions on page 4, the BCC webpage, under Nursing & Allied Health-Associate Degree Nursing, and the BCC monitors. Please review these sites on a regular basis for updates and changes. Dates/times are subject to change without notice. 5. Have completed a state approved Nursing Aide (NA) training program (as described below) OR the BCC fast-track state approved 104 hour NA I Course designed for Paramedics, Medics or Corpsmen, OR be licensed as a Practical Nurse in North Carolina. Information on NC State approved programs can be found at Graduates of out-of-state programs must provide evidence that their program was state approved and verification of CNA registry listing from the state where they graduated. Out-of-state graduates must be listed on the NC Registry by April 1, Challenging the NA I examination will not meet this requirement. 2

3 a) A copy of a high school or college transcript or a course completion certificate from the NA program must be submitted with application (including courses taken at BCC). Do not send NC State CNA verification form. b) In addition to the program certificate, students who graduated from a non-state approved program will be required to present a notarized letter of recommendation from an employer documenting a minimum of 1-year full-time or 2-years part-time satisfactory work experience as a CNA I or II, along with the ADN program application. Applicants submitting letters may be contacted by the ADN Director or designee if clarification is needed. Online verification of certification on the NC Nurse Aide Registry website will be conducted by the ADN program Director or designee, and must be available by April 1, Failure to be listed on the registry, or a substantiated or restricted finding, will disqualify an applicant from admission to program, and that seat will be awarded to an applicant on the alternate list. Verification and licensure must be maintained until the start of the program. 6. Applicants whose native language is not English, and who did not graduate from a high school or college in the United States, will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL ibt). To be considered for admission applicants must meet the following scoring criteria: Total score: 83, with a minimum speaking score of 26, reading score of 15, listening score of 15, and writing score of 20. Contact Student Services for testing information. Tests results must be submitted with ADN application. After this time, all credentials are securely destroyed and must be resubmitted with a new "Application for Enrollment" (i.e., a fall applicant's credentials will be destroyed at the conclusion of the following fall semester.) The number of accepted candidates is determined annually by the faculty of the ADN program. For the academic year, that number is An additional 10 qualified applicants may be selected for an alternate list. These applicants will be notified of their alternate status only, and not their numbered placement. The alternate list is maintained only until classes begin.
