4 Components for Automotive Applications Vishay is one of a respected echelon of component manufacturers whose reputation for reliability and quality is complemented by a decades-long record of service to the automotive industry. The company s products are used in every electronic control unit of the typical vehicle to provide functions including power management; electric motor control; data/audio/video signal switching; infrared (IR) signal transmission; control and switching of RF signals; protection against EMI, RFI, and overtemperature conditions; airbag ignition; and lighting. Power Management and Conversion Power management and conversion products from Vishay, both passive and active devices, provide the high reliability and stability required by automotive systems and are available in a broad range of configurations and packages to provide maximum design flexibility. based on the proprietary Vishay Power Metal Strip technology combine ultra-low ohmic values and high power ratings for superior electrical performance in packages ranging from the 0603 to 2512 size. Optimized for operation in the demanding environmental conditions that characterize automotive systems, thick film chip resistors from Vishay offer excellent stability and high reliability over a full resistance range in all case sizes from the smallest 0201 up to a 2512 case size. For higher power requirements up to 100 W, our power thick film resistors in the D 2 PAK, TO-220, and TO-247 complete the resistor line while providing a broad ohmic value range. Capacitor options include devices with ceramic, tantalum, or aluminum substrates in a broad variety of case sizes and with the high temperature ratings required by the automotive environment. For example, aluminum capacitors are available in radial, axial, and snap-in formats to provide effective filtering in switchmode power supplies at temperatures up to 150 C and vibration levels up to 30 G, while molded tantalum capacitors deliver exceptionally stable, high-capacitance performance over a long life and in high-temperature (under-the-hood) environments. Many of these passive devices may be found throughout a vehicle, and they have in common high maximum operating temperatures, through-hole and surface-mount options, and reliable performance. For example, Vishay s high-precision power current-sensing resistors offer superior accuracy and performance with low thermal resistance, low power coefficients, high stability, and rapid stabilization in a variety of power management and electric motor control applications. Likewise, Vishay s power MOSFETs may be implemented in numerous electrical systems within an automobile. Available in DPAK, D 2 PAK, PowerPAK, TO-220, TO-262, and LITTLE FOOT SO-8 and small-outline packages with temperature- and current-sensing options in some configurations, n-channel and p-channel power MOSFETs provide industry-leading efficiency and space savings in load switching and dc-to-dc conversion applications. Vishay s PowerPAK package provides thermal performance equivalent to that of DPAK packages, and our MOSFETs offer the best on-resistance performance for p-channel MOSFET devices with high enough density to eliminate the need for an n-channel charge pump. Also used in virtually every automotive system, SUPERECTIFIER and, PAR load dump and automotive TVS, TransZorb TVS and Schottky Rectifiers uniformly offer high reliability with either miniaturized packaging or wide operating temperature range specifications. To protect against pre-spark conditions in automotive ignition coils, Vishay offers its high-voltage BYT62 sinterglass diode in a hermetically sealed package. Noise Filtering An important aspect in reliable system performance in harsh automotive environments is proper filtering of unwanted noise. Used as the primary electronic component for common-mode filtering, Vishay capacitors give designers a broad choice of technologies and package sizes. In addition to a standard range of dielectrics suitable for reliable operation over the automotive operating temperature range, Vishay offers high-temperature +150 C-capable dielectric systems. 5 and solid tantalum capacitors, with the latter two available in EIA-size SMD packages, makes an ideal solution for high-volume PCB and hybrid automotive applications. Tantalum molded SMD capacitors are offered in tape-and-reel packaging and widely used for filtering low frequency noise. Vishay also offers a complete line of axial and radial DIP tantalum devices that can be used in through-hole board applications. For-high frequency applications, MLCCs are available in bulk cassette and tape-and-reel packaging. Engine Control Functions In addition to devices found throughout an automobile, Vishay offers devices aimed at specific application requirements. Among these systems are engine control functions, for which Vishay designs motion transducers according to customer requirements. Supplied either as a kit with resistive track and wiper, or as a complete assembly, Vishay s motion transducers are available in configurations including a redundant sensor, two parallel tracks, two tracks with inverted gradients, or two tracks with different gradients. Other options include rotary or rectilinear movement, non-linear output laws, a spring-loaded shaft return, an electronic circuit mounted near the potentiometer, an integrated automotive connector with additional electrical output (DC or torque motor supply), and an integrated discrete switch. Dual functions such as idle and throttle control also are available. For engine control functions, the throttle position sensor provides throttle-angle feedback necessary for power, cruise and traction control to the electronic command unit. The throttle position sensor can be supplied as a kit incorporated into the throttle body by the customer, or as a complete sensor assembly with optional additional functions. Pedal-position sensing is enabled by a gas pedal sensor, which transmits the throttle pedal angle again necessary for power, cruise and traction control to the electronic command unit. With the throttle position sensor, the gas pedal sensor helps the electronic command unit achieve improved fuel economy and simplifies engine power management. Vishay supplies the gas pedal sensor as a kit integrated by the customer into the pedal assembly, or as a complete sensor with optional additional functions. Exhaust gas recirculation valve positioning is controlled by a sensor that helps ensure vehicles are in accordance with worldwide emission requirements. As exhaust gas recirculation sensors can be either rectilinear or rotational, Vishay offers circuit solutions as a kit integrated by the customer into the exhaust gas recirculation valve body, or as a complete sensor with optional additional functions. Vishay s gear position sensor, in conjunction with the electronic command unit, allows automatic operation of the clutch mechanism. Data/Audio/Video Signal Switching For data/audio/video signal switching applications, Vishay offers power ICs designed specifically for communication in automotive diagnostics and sensors. These ESD-protected transceivers and receivers operate over a broad battery voltage range, serving as integrated bi-directional serial communication interfaces between controllers and the physical bus. Analog switch ICs from Vishay are used in a number of automotive applications. These include the gathering of sensor information using multiplexer switches that provide selection of analog inputs (up to 16 channels) and the routing, selection, and distribution of analog signals such as audio or video for in-vehicle entertainment or driver information systems. Manufactured to high standards and meeting or exceeding the automotive operating temperature requirements, analog switch ICs from Vishay are also used in navigation and engine control/monitoring sub-system applications, and include devices for use in the engine compartment. Infrared (IR) Signal Transmission Vishay s IR receiver modules and IRDC transceivers provide reliable wireless remote control and data transfer functions for integrated systems such as GPS and audio systems, as well as fast, wireless communications between external devices such as PDAs and notebooks to integrated multimedia systems. IR systems support automotive power steering systems by identifying steering angle and facilitate park, reverse, neutral, drive, and low (PRNDL) gear detection. Newer in-vehicle communications and multimedia systems including wireless headsets and TV remote control systems also rely on IR receiver modules and IRDC transceivers for signal transmission. 4 VISHAY SOLUTIONS FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS

6 Control and Switching of RF Signals Discrete components including RF PIN diodes and RF bipolar and MOS transistors are available from Vishay for RF signal control and switching. Vishay s low-noise RF transistors operate on a low supply voltage with a low operating current, while the company s MOSMIC series of RF MOS transistors feature a high AGC range and good cross-modulation. Precision RF capacitors from Vishay provide extremely stable capacitance vs. frequency stability, with high capacitance values in smallest RF footprints to 15 GHz for satellite radios and other RF filtering and impedance-matching applications. Vishay s HPC silicon-based capacitors are ideal for use in RF frequency applications such as highspeed communications and signal transmission for services such as satellite radio where a constant capacity per frequency and temperature range is required. Protection Against EMI, RFI, and Overtemperature Conditions To minimize electromagnetic and radio interference that can compromise performance, Vishay supplies an extensive line of magnetics, which includes transformers and inductors that have been designed, tested, and approved for use as automotive parts. These series are characterized by low-profile, shielded designs featuring high-frequency or high-current operation in a lead (Pb)-free construction. To guard against overtemperature conditions, Vishay offers a range of thermistors that ensure excellent stability and fast response times in temperature management and compensation, as well as in transient and overload protection. Integrated passive devices (IPDs) with these protective features help to minimize component count and reduce board-space area and complexity. Airbag Systems For airbag systems, Vishay both provides ignition resistors and aluminum capacitors. The latter are used to provide the ignition energy when the battery becomes disconnected. Built using proven technologies and quality-controlled manufacturing processes, both devices help to ensure a reliable response in this critical safety application. Lighting and Instrument Panel Applications Vishay s LED series supply high luminous flux performance, operation over a broad operating temperature range, and numerous wavelength/color options for backlighting, interior lighting, audio and dashboard controls, and exterior lighting including turn signals and taillights. Complete modules are available from Vishay to drive power LEDs with the constant current required to maintain uniform light output and ensure maximum lifetimes for LED components.
