A career academy is a small learning community within a school. Students enrolled in career academies can: Earn college credits through the dual-credit program with area colleges and universities while taking career and technical courses at GlenOak Study and work in a 21st Century High School that includes a branch of the Stark County District Library Pursue industry certification in many areas of career and technical studies Become better prepared to enter a two-year or four-year college, enter the workforce or military Thank you for taking time to consider the opportunities available in our Career programs at GlenOak High School. 3 General Information Career Education offers students a vast number of opportunities to experience early career choices. Please begin to explore our website or schedule an appointment to visit GlenOak High School. Who Can Attend? GlenOak High School Career Programs are open to all Stark County students who are entering the junior or senior year. Many students take career classes at GlenOak High School then return to take classes at their home school. Transportation is not provided unless you are a resident of Jackson, Lake, or North Canton. How Do I Register? Contact your school counselor and request program registration materials on specific programs available to you. 4 Administrative Office Technology Animation & Graphic Design Automotive Technology This exciting program provides office skills to those students interested in working in an administrative support environment. Students have real-life hands on experiences in an office doing high quality presentations using word processing skills, spreadsheet applications and desktop publishing. They have the opportunity to earn college credits. Student learning opportunities include: 10-key calculator Records Management Office Procedures Business Math Word processing Spreadsheet Office presentations Desktop publishing Worksite experiences have included: hospitals, insurance companies, licensing agencies, community service agencies, small business offices, manufacturing offices and law offices. Students enter state and national BPA competitions and have been highly successful. Explore our animation website and see the hands-on projects that our students are creating at This exciting program allows students high levels of creativity as they learn the basics of graphic design, animation, visualization, and 3D modeling. This course prepares students for high demand careers that allow students the creativity to design models. Students will have the opportunity to work on both PC and Macintosh platforms. They will gain experience using Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Flash, and other design programs. Learning experiences include: Graphic design Digital imaging Media design Animation Students enjoy this design tech program, which is a strong foundation for many high tech fields. Students can earn college credits while taking these high school courses. GlenOak s Automotive Technology Program provides students with hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for entry level and post-secondary education programs. Learning experiences include learning to repair and maintain integrated electronic systems and complex computers in addition to repairing simpler mechanical parts on cars and trucks. GlenOak s state of the art auto lab will allow students to learn how to use electronic diagnostic equipment and computerbased technical reference material. Students learn diagnostic and mechanical skills. Classroom learning experiences include: Diagnosing the source of auto problems Using electronic testing equipment Reading and interpreting diagnostic results Using technical manuals, reading charts, and diagrams Repairing, overhauling, and replacing systems and parts such as mechanical systems, steering suspension brakes, and transmissions Doing routine maintenance

5 CBIP Career Based Intervention Program Cisco Networking Technologies Commercial Photography GlenOak s Career Based Intervention Program provides students with educational and employability skills including an out of school work component. Students are provided a personalized education and work skills program with an emphasis on student academic completion. Students are supported by an educational team focused on the student achievement and success of students meeting the core requirements. Learning experiences include: Career self assessments leading to work skills preparation Goal setting, leadership, and teamwork Job Preparation through mock interviews and developing job resumes Technology in the workplace Knowledge of money management skills including: banking, credit, insurance, and taxes Professionalism in the workplace Developing communication skills Workplace health and safety Students have the opportunity to hear speakers from various businesses, trade schools, and the military. The world of networking is a highly competitive arena that continues to grow in complexity as technology evolves. We offer CISCO Career certifications, a program that addresses the highly successful CISCO Certified network associate. (CCNA Program) Students have the opportunity to earn college credits while in this program. Students leave the program with an outstanding background on how to provide network support and additional options. They also can earn college credit while participating in this high school program. Learning experiences include: Operations Network Administration Network Design Theory Network Troubleshooting Network Operations Center and Management Computer Hardware Maintenance This program prepares students for CCIE certification and Cisco CCNA Certification. It also prepares students for immediate employment and transitions in two year college programs. GlenOak s award winning Commercial Photography program provides students with a variety of hands-on photography experiences extending their knowledge and skills beyond any typical high school course. This hands-on curriculum prepares students for post secondary and entry-level positions. Learning experiences include: Use and operate a variety of cameras Film development and computer editing techniques Producing quality photographs and negatives Manipulating images using Photoshop Communicating messages and meanings through pictures Experience in professional lighting equipment Students will gain an appreciation of art, nature, and the environment and how to communicate meaning in their photography.

6 Construction Trades Cosmetology Early Childhood Education GlenOak s Construction Trades program provides students with intensive learning opportunities in the major areas of construction: carpentry, electricity, masonry, and plumbing. Students work together each year on a building project such as a Habitat for Humanity House that provides students with on-site learning from the start to the finish of a building project. On-the job training is also available for qualifying seniors during their second semester. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school. Learning experiences include a wide range of skills and subjects such as: Carpentry Plumbing Electrical Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Masonry Students will develop necessary skills to enter the workforce, an apprenticeship, or two year associate degree at a college or university. This high demand field offers on site learning experiences in skin care, manicuring, hair care, chemical designing, hair coloring, facials, and makeup. This program offers students the opportunity to experience an academic curriculum that will prepare them for licensing and entrance in the field. Students provide services in our on-site salon. Learning experiences include: Hair cutting, styling, and shampooing Permanent waving Hair chemical coloring and relaxing Make-up applications and facials Manicuring and pedicuring Artificial nails Salon management Related fields, massage therapy Students will have the opportunity to become a licensed cosmetologist before graduation. GlenOak s Early Childhood Education Program prepares students for careers in childcare and education. This child-centered program offers students the chance to experience a hands-on curriculum that will prepare students for this high demand job area. Students will have learning experiences that include: Child growth and development practices Relationships with Children Health, Nutrition, and Safety Issues Cognitive Skills Teaching Techniques Curriculum and Instruction Students in the Early Childhood/Teacher Education program gain valuable practical experiences by job shadowing elementary and preschool teachers and by working in different childcare centers. This program prepares students for a variety of careers that will allow for immediate employment and/or successful transition to a two-year or four year college program.

7 E-Commerce Marketing Engineering Technology Fire Science & EMS Technologies GlenOak s E-Commerce Marketing Program provides students with learning experiences on how to operate an on-line business and extends their learning in business marketing. This program prepares students for a variety of careers in marketing for immediate employment or successful transition to a four year college program. This is a program for young entrepreneurs. Learning experiences include: Desktop Publishing Web Site Development DECA Competition Job Shadowing Internships/Mentorships Global/International Commerce Stock Market Portfolio Prep Business/Sports Management On-Line Sales GlenOak s Engineering Technology program provides students with the opportunity to focus on science and engineering; preparing them for product improvement, industrial processes, and operational functions. This program focuses on application and design based on research, theory, and design. GlenOak s Engineering Technology students will be trained in physics and other sciences, computer-aided design applications, quality control processes, electronics, research, occupational exploration, and communications. Learning experiences include the theory and design in the following areas: Manufacturing Technology Electronics Automated Systems Work Site Experiences include: Engineering Firms Production Facilities Research Centers Fabrication Facilities GlenOak s Fire Science and Emergency Medical Services Technology program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenging needs of protecting and providing services to a community. Today s firefighters are cross-trained to also serve as paramedics. This program provides the important training needed for these careers. GlenOak s Fire Science program has received recognition through the Ohio Board of Regents as a unique Seniors to Sophomores program. Students not only learn the skills needed to complete the Fire Science and EMT certifications, but also have the opportunity to take college credit coursework through Stark State College. Seniors have the opportunity to complete twenty-six college credit hours as high school students.they can leave GlenOak High School with one or two semesters of college completed. Students train and have on-site lab experiences at the fire facility located at Stark State College.

8 Fuel Cell Technology Health Technologies Horticulture The Plain Local School District will provide an energy science specialization through engineering technology that focuses on alternative energy sources with a priority toward fuel cell technology. This two-year career pathway will incorporate mechanical, chemical, and scientific engineering principles for solutions in fuel cell energy. Students will explore alternative energy sources; have a clear understanding of the different types of fuel cells, and fuel cell systems. Student learning experiences will include: Exploration of alternative fuel cell sources through data and analysis of production and design Examination of energy economics and implications of global competition, distribution infrastructure, and environmental roles Study of principles in designing alternative solutions for energy GlenOak¹s Health Technology program provides students with learning opportunities in health, wellness, and fitness. Plain Local¹s partnership with Mercy Medical Center as well as numerous other health care facilities provide real work experiences. Students learn emergency procedures, injury prevention, sports massage, nutrition, first aid, and sports training. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits in this program. Student learning experiences include: Anatomy and Physiology Nutrition and Wellness Medical Terminology Patient Education First Aid Weight Training GlenOak¹s Horticulture Program prepares students for careers in landscape design, maintenance and construction, environmental science, greenhouse management, flower shop management, and turf management. Students receive training in a commercial scale greenhouse, and retail floral design lab. Environmental science is taught in the environmental wetlands and other habitats located on-site. This allows students to better understand environmental issues that effect plant growth. Student opportunities include: Computer assisted landscape design Hands-on experiences in greenhouse and site design Greenhouse production Nursery and plant identification Turf management Floral design Flowershop and Landscaping Management

9 Hospitality Legal Studies Light & Sound PRODUCTION GlenOak s Hospitality program provides students with hands on learning in cooperation with Mercy Medical Center and Aultman Health Foundation. The experiences gained through the program lay a solid foundation for employment opportunities and successful transition to a post-secondary program in the service industry. Classroom focuses are in marketing, communications, teamwork, and interpersonal skills as well as producing an interview portfolio. Student learning experiences include: Dietary Laundry Housekeeping Environmental Services Materials Management Job Site training will allow students a variety of work experiences in the hospitality field GlenOak s Legal Studies program provides students with extended opportunities in law related fields extending their interest and knowledge in legal and ethical issues. Students will examine the nature and function of the legal system; the process of law making; and specific areas of the law such as Environmental and Forensic Science, Statistics, Real Estate, Corporate Law, and Actuary Tables. Students can earn college credit. Student learning experiences include: Mock trials Probation and parole hearings Discussions on global and international issues Specialty speakers on legal issues Policy writing Case law studies GlenOak s Light and Sound Production Program provides students with knowledge in theatre production, mass media, and communication through pictures, sounds, and colors. Students have real world training as they work in the on-site Sound Box to provide exciting and creative sound and lighting for GlenOak s many performing arts programs and community performances. Student learning opportunities include: onsite experience in light and sound design, operation of light and sound boards, use of theatre equipment, and editing and production of video. College credits can be earned for this program. 10 MARKETING Robotics & Automation Teacher PathwayS GlenOak s Marketing Education Program provides students with knowledge in the areas of business and marketing. Students master coursework in all marketing functions: finance, distribution and logistics, product service management, promotions, selling, and marketing management. Students learn the foundations of economics, communication and interpersonal skills, business administration, business management, entrepreneurship, and professional development. Student learning experiences include: Product distribution Information management Pricing Product management Promotion and sales Entrepreneurship Financial Communication The Robotics and Automation is a new program through the state of Ohio. It is the only one of its kind in Stark County. The focus is on automation and robotics through the manufacturing technology pathway. This two-year career pathway will incorporate the manufacturing principles for solutions in automation and robotics. Students will explore the manufacturing processes including: computer numerical control, data acquisition, electrical controls, fluid power, and robotics. Learning opportunities include: Student design and production Student application in technological design processes to society needs Student use of simulation software and programming of a robotic work cell Programming of robotic systems as applied to manufacturing operations, and plan for their implementation in appropriate processes. The Teacher Pathway Program is a threeyear program that provides Praxis based training focused on challenges, obstacles, and the exciting rewards of teaching. Students have the opportunity to not only learn but also participate in experiences that provide them with the foundations necessary to pursue a career in teaching. College credits can be earned in this program. Student learning experiences include: Orientation to the teaching profession Classroom job shadowing Lesson plan development Teacher mentoring Instruction in best practice teaching techniques Creating assessments Curriculum and instruction

11 Intro to Video Production GlenOak High School Soar Above Excellence 21st Century Skills Preparing Students For The Future Innovative Offerings College Credit In High School Personalized Career Pathways Industry Certification GlenOak s Video Production Program provides the opportunity for students to develop the fundamental and advanced skills used in the broadcast television and film Industries. This includes camera and videography, studio and remote production, lighting, sound, special effects, editing and other postproduction techniques. Students learn those skills needed to enter this exciting career area to continue in a post secondary program. Students will have the opportunity to create programming for public broadcast on Cable Channel 11. Student learning opportunities include: Video planning and editing Video filming using high definition cameras Scheduling of video programs Use of digital software for advanced film editing techniques Production shooting Use of special effects software
