2 Registration Information About Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education The Cherry Creek School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are pleased to offer the highest quality programs to meet both college and workplace standards. The CTE Building is located on the northwest side of the Cherry Creek High School Campus. Courses at Pickens Technical College and some select out-of-district programs are also available (see next pages). All CTE programs require an application. Students interested in any of the CTE courses listed in this catalog are encouraged to obtain information by contacting the CTE office: Cherry Creek School District Career and Technical Education 9150 E. 3 Application Due: March 9, 2012 Concurrent Enrollment Many of the courses Cherry Creek CTE offer are Concurrent Enrollment courses. The following are answers to many frequently asked questions about this program: Q: What is the Concurrent Enrollment Program? CCSD students receive both high school credit and college credit for Concurrent Enrollment classes. Students begin building a college transcript while they complete their high school graduation requirements. Students must receive a grade of C or better to receive transferable college credit. Q: What s the cost? Tuition is paid by Cherry Creek Schools and the College Opportunity Fund (That s over $250 savings per class!). pays a portion of a student s tuition. All students must complete an application for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) at: Q: Am I eligible for the Concurrent Enrollment Program? High school students can take Concurrent Enrollment classes. Q: Is this right for me? Will my credits transfer? The Concurrent Enrollment Program creates options for students still in high school. It prepares students for the rigor and culture of college. Students build a college transcript while still in high school. Students may transfer their college credits to any two or fouryear college or university. Check with the accepting institution for credit acceptance. Q: What is COF (College Opportunity Fund)? All students must apply for COF. The COF stipend
4 Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education Automotive Technology I Open to grades: 10,11, 12; Fee $50; 1 credit Overland HS: 7:10-8:50 Blue Days M, T, Th, F 7:55-9:25 Blue Days W Smoky Hill HS: 12:55-2:30 Green Days M, T, Th, F 1:05-2:30 Green Days W This course teaches the principles and fundamentals of automotive systems and the safe use of hand and power tools, instruments, and test equipment. A full year of study involves the following systems: cooling, power train, brakes, lubrication, alignment starting/charging electrical, ignition, fuel, and suspension systems. Emphasis is placed on safe working practices, preventive maintenance, basic trouble shooting/diagnosis, and tune-up procedures. These will take place through classroom and laboratory learning experiences. Automotive Technology II, III Open to grades: 11, 12; Fee $50; 2 Credits Prerequisites: Automotive Technology I Smoky Hill HS: 7:10-10:27 Red Days M, T, Th, F 7:45-10:42 Red Days W Overland HS: 1:05-2:45 Blue Days M, T, Th, F 1:15-2:45 Blue Days W Arapahoe Community College (with CTE Coordinator Approval) courses ASE 123 Automotive Electrical and ASE 150 Automotive U-joint & Axle services. Students will earn high school credit while, at the same time, enroll in and earn Arapahoe Community College credit toward a 2 year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and Certificate degree program. Aviation Technology Open to grades: 11, 12; 1 credit Grandview HS: 7:10-8:49 A & B Days M, T, Th, F 7:50-9:19 W CTE Building: 11:10-12:00 M-F OHS/IST Bldg: 1:05-2:45 A & B Days M, T, Th, F 1:15-2:45 W Aviation course AVT 101. This course will earn both high school credit and community college credit toward a 2 year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and Certificate degree program. This program helps students understand and appreciate all of the facets of the Aviation careers and Aerospace industries of today. Topics range from how to achieve a private pilot license to careers at NASA. Additionally, students will prepare for the FAA private pilot knowledge exam; the first step for a flying career Former students are currently employed in careers such as air traffic controllers, airline and military pilots, and aircraft mechanics. Instruction includes lecture, discussion, and computer-based flight simulator programs. The class also participates in various field trips to places such as Peterson Air Force Base, Centennial Airport, NORAD, and the United Airlines Training flight simulator. 5 Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education Comprehensive Commercial Photography Open to grades: 11, 12; $50 Fee; 2 credits Course Length:1 year w/limited bus CTE Building: 8:15-9:45 M-F 1:45-3:15 M-F Digital Photography 1 course MGD 111. This course will earn both high school credit and community college credit toward a 2 year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and Certified degree program. This course is designed to teach students 35 mm black/white and color film technology and theory while using the darkroom as well as medium and large format cameras. Digital photography is explored in the second semester with Photoshop. Students will research the career possibilities of professional photography, develop a resume, and meet pro photographers and prepare for college and industry. Comprehensive Graphic Design Open to grades: 11, 12; 2 Credits CTE Building: 8:15-9:45 M-F 1:45-3:15 M-F Multimedia Graphic Design course MGD 112, Adobe Illustrator 1. This course will earn both high school credit and community college credit toward a 2 year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and Certificate degree program. This class provides talented artists an opportunity to explore a career in Graphic Design. Students will learn how to work for a client and produce creative solutions for a variety of commercial needs. Activities include creating promotional materials such as logos, brochures, posters, cards, and advertising. Students will employ hand drawing, and Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator to complete their assignments. Students will develop professional portfolios and may submit work to contests and for college scholarships. Students may receive concurrent enrollment credit for this program. Criminal Justice Open to grades: 11, 12; 1 credit Grandview HS: 7:10-8:49 A Days M, T, Th, F 7:50-9:19 W Cherokee Trail HS: 7:10-8:49 B Days M, T, Th, F 7:50-9:19 W CTE Building: 11:10-12:00 M-F CTE Building: 1:45-3:15 A or B days M-F Criminal Justice course. This course may earn both high school credit and community college credit toward a 2 year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and Certificate degree program. This Criminal Justice course will concentrate on potential careers in the criminal justice system and law enforcement in general. This course will have a heavy emphasis on law enforcement, crime scene investigation, and forensic science. The Criminal Justice program, in general, may be taken for either one or two years, as the courses offered alternate each year. This class is open to either juniors or seniors. It is highly recommended that students be able to read and write at the 10th level in order to receive the community college credits in addition to the high school credits. This course is taught at a college level. As such, students will be expected to have the dedication and the motivation that they would apply to a college level course. This course is an academic course and is not an academybased, hands-on, law enforcement course. Field trips will be taken to the CELL Terrorism Museum, Arapahoe Community College s Firearms and Police Pursuit Training simulators, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) criminal forensics laboratory, the Arapahoe County Jail, and the Arapahoe District Court to conduct a mock trial or trials. Students will need to arrange to carpool or independently drive to each of the field trips, as no buses will be provided. Transportation The Cherry Creek School District will make every attempt to provide transportation to and from classes at the Cherry Creek CTE Building and Pickens Technical College for morning classes only. For all other classes, students will need to provide their own transportation or ride RTD busses. The District may provide bus passes to those CCSD students who will use RTD. Look to each course description to see if a bus may be a possibility.
6 Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education Fashion Design I & II Grade Level: Fees: $10.00 per Semester Ames Facility (Littleton School District) 7:30 9:20 am T-R or 12:55 2:45 pm T-R Fashion Design is a year-long career pathway program introducing students to the many facets of the fashion design industry. Students begin the semester looking at the history of American fashion starting in the 1920 s. The elements and principles of design as they relate to fashion are explored along with fashion drawing, basic garment silhouettes, and construction details. Basic garment construction is also integrated with a sewing project. During second semester, students will explore the marketing and merchandising side of fashion. The fashion capitals of the world are examined, revealing the global perspective of the industry. Next, students take a fashion garment from concept to consumer, prototyping their product, and creating a design portfolio representing their knowledge of the design process. The fashion cycle and green design are also explored. ProStart (Culinary Careers) Open to grades: 11, 12 Credit: 1; Grandview HS: 7:10-8:49 A Days M, T, Th, F 7:50-9:19 A Days W Health Sciences Grade Level: ; Fee: $25 - $50 Credits: 2 or 1 depending on location of program 2 Credit Program - Ames Facility (Littleton School District) students must visit program before acceptance. Biology preferred as a prerequisite. 1st Semester: 7:30-9:00 or 12:30-2:30; 2nd Semester: 7:00-9:45 or 12:00-2:45 1 Credit Program - Overland High School Institute of Science & Technology Principles of Health Science times to be announced (alternating block schedule) no prerequisites for students. During the first semester students explore the healthcare industry and begin to lay the foundation for an entry level career. The rigorous curriculum includes: basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health care systems, medical legal and ethical issues, and health career exploration. Students will be exposed to experts in the industry through guest speakers and field trips. Individual career pathways are developed during the second semester. Students may participate in the Nurse Aide Program, individual internships or other health career training opportunities. Professional portfolio development, employment skills and leadership training through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) are emphasized during the second semester. College Credit may be available. Visit required as part of the application process. Smoky Hill HS: 7:10-8:45 Green Days M, T, Th, F 7:45-9:10 Green Days W ProStart is a two year preparatory program specifically designed for those students who are seriously interested in exploring career directions in the Hospitality & Food Service industry. Interested students will learn customer relations and to prepare and serve safe healthy food. Students will learn about preventing accidents and injuries, and develop basic kitchen skills. All business aspects of running a restaurant will be practiced. Students will have an opportunity to an internship with firsthand training site mentors.
7 Cherry Creek Career & Technical Education Executive Internship Open to grades: 11,12 Course Length: 1 Semester Prerequisites: Application and Interview Credit: 1.5 (half day) or 3 (full day) credits Internship hours: 14 hrs or 28 hrs per week Offered at the Career Technical Education Building This program will provide students with the opportunity to apply for interesting and challenging internships that will take them ahead of the competition! Selected students will spend a semester with an executive or professional in the field of their choice. Within each internship, students can expect to do various work assignments, attend meetings, complete projects, all while applying the skills and knowledge they have gained in their education. Students should be above average academically or especially talented in the career area they wish to pursue. Professional success also depends on the students maturity, responsibility and reliability. Internships are unpaid. This program is selective, and additional application materials are required. Students may obtain these in their counseling offices. B.E.T.A. (Business Education Transition Alliance) Open to grades: 10, 11, 12 Course Length:.25 Quarter increments The BETA program is a work-based alliance for students with special needs and students who are at-risk. The BETA program will coordinate a specially designed learning experience to include workplace skills. It will meet the needs of the students within a flexible environment. The class allows students to earn credit through career exploration and community connections. The program introduces students to a number of career opportunities through job shadows, internships and skillbuilding classroom experiences. The BETA program goals: 1) Place students in career pathway experiences 2) Prepare students for the workforce 3) Locate entry level job opportunities for high school students approaching graduation 4) Expose students to post high school training in their career interest area 5) Partner with Denver Metro employers and provide work ready employees. Teacher Cadet Open to grades: 11, 12 Credit: 1 Overland HS (times to be determined); or Smoky Hill HS (times to be determined) Ames Facility (Littleton School District) 7:30-9:20 am M-F -or- 12:55-2:45 pm M-F The Teacher Cadet program is an innovative program that introduces high school students to the teaching profession. Students will explore the learner, the school, and the role of the teacher through exciting hands-on activities, guest speakers, field trips, 15 hours of both classroom and other school observations, classroom observations, job shadowing, and cooperative learning situations. During second semester, students will participate in an extended field experience in which the Cadets will work closely with a cooperative teacher for 8-10 weeks. The Cadet will be immersed in the classroom experience by helping students one-on-one or in large groups, plan lessons, grade, create, and teach. This rewarding experience will also help Cadets earn hours for education programs at the college level. Each cadet will work on a portfolio throughout the entire year. Catering Open to grades: 11, 12 Credit: 1; Overland High School: Times to be determined (alternating block schedule) Sheridan HS: 2:40-3:30 M-F Catering is an overview of traditional and contemporary banquet menus with an emphasis on quality, quantity, setup, timing, service, event planning, and execution of largevolume cooking and catering. This course reinforces basic cooking and serving competencies and develops new skills specific to banquet preparation and service. Topics include contemporary American banquets, classical cuisine banquets, hot and cold buffet stations, special events, various styles of service, psychology of service, guest relations, the sequence of service, and professional standards for dining room personnel. Students practice the skills of controlling inventory, analyzing costs and sales, and operating a complete catering/banquet business under the direction of a faculty member. Students will help run the FCCLA catering business as a member of this class!
