2 Charterhouse School gives students the education and resources to reach new heights and achieve excellence. At our campuses in Richmond and Edinburg, our highly-trained and passionate staff serve elementary through college students with autism and other neurological differences, as well as emotional, intellectual and learning challenges. We believe that an empowering education is not limited to the classroom Charterhouse students engage in a variety of creative and participatory learning experiences and activities to become self-sufficient, contributing members of their communities.

3 Services Charterhouse Schools feature year-round academics for grades 1 through 12 based on VA Standards of Learning (SOL) curriculum and Individualized Education Plans (IEP). Collaborative Learning Children learn, grow and build companionship with a consistent group of their peers. Our students also engage in community service and receive individual and group counseling when needed. Academic Life and Social Skill Development Equal emphasis is given to academic instruction and to social, behavioral and life skills training, with opportunities to practice these skills in the community. College Program for Students with Autism Our Courage to Succeed Program provides strategies and goals for independent living to students accepted to J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

4 Career & Vocational Exploration We introduce students to the technical skills they need to explore career options. Businesses in the community provide internship opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience. Culinary arts prepares students for work in the foodservice and hospitality industry. Students gain valuable experience by preparing and serving meals at school events. Cosmetology* gives students skills used in hair salons, from shampooing to facials, and the opportunity to use their skills on campus and at Guardian Place senior housing. Horticulture provides hands-on experience growing and arranging flowers and plants for special events and for sale. The vegetables raised are used in our culinary arts program in which students learn to prepare fresh, healthy meals. Video production* teaches students how to shoot, edit and produce for TV. *Available at the Charterhouse School Richmond campus only.

5 The Circle of Courage TM We help each student become a self-sufficient and contributing community member by bolstering inherent strengths and addressing the four universal developmental needs of the Circle of Courage. 1. BELONGING Students learn to treat others as family, building powerful social bonds and relationships of respect. 4. GENEROSITY By being generous and helping others, students build self-worth and make positive contributions to their communities. 2. MASTERY Teachers act as models for learning. Students learn to lead by example and develop the skills to become competent and responsible. 3. INDEPENDENCE Teachers encourage students to make decisions, solve problems and show personal responsibility, which helps build self-reliance and trust.
