Bus Control network Daisy-chain EBL512 Echelon Free topology LonTalk LonWorks Looping topologies Router Segment Stub PEWFSTE The bus has two endpoints; i.e. the endpoints are not connected together in a loop. The doubly terminated bus is terminated at the two endpoints. Data network that requires a short response time between the communicating units. A method that allows one cable to connect the first device to the second device and then a second cable to connect the second device with the third device, and so on. Fire alarm system control unit of PEWFSTE Echelon Corporation Unlike the doubly terminated bus, the free topology allows the user to wire the units with virtually no topology restrictions, i.e. star or loop wiring. Free topology is not recommended in a TLON network. Network protocol. (Registered trademark of Echelon Corporation) Technology platform for implementing control network systems. (Registered trademark of Echelon Corporation) Multiple routers connecting the same two segments. May cause an endless looping of forwarded messages and is not recommend in a TLON network. Component in data networks that transport messages between segments. See further explanation in A physical part of the network, i.e. the wires to which the EBL512 control units are connected. The segments are isolated from each other with routers. A short wiring between the bus and a unit. The stub is connected to the bus in a junction box. Stubs are not recommended in a TLON network. 7 3 General description of the System TLON is a local network that uses LonWorks technology. The EBL512 control units are connected to the TLON network with a built in module, the TLON connection board The PC presentation system products that are connected to TLON use different kinds of LonTalk adapters from Echelon. The communication media that the TLON connection board 1590 supports is twisted pair. As every LonWorks system TLON use the networking protocol LonTalk, this assures a reliable communication and a short response time between the units on TLON. LonTalk also provides network management services for installation and diagnostics of the network. Since units share the same communication media, physically attaching units to TLON is not enough for them to communicate. Units in a data network needs to be given network configuration information, such as network addresses, to enable them to understand with whom they should share data. With TLON, this network configuration information is defined and loaded by the network installation tool TLON Manager. Besides this, TLON Manager downloads the control unit number to each unit connected to TLON. With the TLON Manager the user just defines the network, there is no need to know the specific network addresses or the bindings between the units, TLON Manager generates this information automatically. TLON Manager also has functions for diagnostics to detect failures at a network level. In a TLON network it is possible and recommendable to use routers. These units increases the maximum cable length and achieves an electrical isolation between the segments of the TLON network. There are a lot of third part router products on the market and also routers that supports other communication media than twisted pair e.g. optical fibers. However PEWFSTE can only guarantee the function if the recommended products are used and the recommendations according to cable types, cable length, topologies and others are followed. 5
4 Network design 4.1 General rules Every EBL512 control unit in a TLON network has to have a unique control unit number. The control unit number is a number between 0 and 29. If a PC presentation system is a part of the system and connected to TLON the control unit number 29 is reserved to this PC presentation system. This means that a maximum EBL512 system consists of 29 EBL512 control units and one PC presentation system. EBL512 do not support two different PC presentation systems in the same network. The control unit numbers in a system does not have to start at 0 and does not have to be consecutive. The recommended wiring of a TLON network is to use the doubly terminated bus topology. See section 4.2. The length of the network cable is dependent on the cable type. For information about the length and qualified cable types see section 4.3. If the TLON network consists of more than six EBL512 control units it s recommended to split the network in segments with routers. If the TLON network consists of many segments and a PC presentation system, it is possible to connect the PC presentation system in any of the segments. If the TLON network consists of more than two segments its recommended to use a topology defined in this document, see section
4.2 The doubly terminated bus topology The transceivers used in a TLON network are the FTT-10A twisted pair transceivers. The FTT-10A transceiver is transformer isolated and operates at a data rate of 78 kbps. Even though the FTT-10A transceiver supports free topology the recommended wiring of a TLON network, is to use the doubly terminated bus topology. Two terminations are required one at each end of the bus. The termination is a resistor, R = 105Ω±1% 1/8W. The doubly terminated bus topology. Wiring between the bus and an EBL512 control unit (stub), follows special regulations and is therefore not recommended. Instead the EBL512 control unit supports that both incoming and outgoing wires are connected in the control unit. In that way the control units are stringed together in a daisy-chain fashion. Bus Stub EBL512 EBL512 EBL512 Figure 3. Stubs are not recommended. 7
4.3 Network cable length and cable selection The performance of the network may vary with the cable type. The transmission specification depends on such factors as resistance, mutual capacitance, and the velocity of propagation. For immunity of electromagnetic fields and fast transients it is important that the cable consist of twisted pairs. Cable type Wire dia./awg R loop Ω/km C nf/km V prop % of c Max cable length Belden 85102, single twisted pair, stranded 19/29, unshielded, 150 C Belden 8471, single twisted pair, stranded 19/29, unshielded, 60 C Level IV 22AWG, twisted pair, typically solid & unshielded TIA568A Category 5 24AWG, twisted pair 1.3mm/ m 1.3mm/ m 0.65mm/ m 0.51mm/ m The doubly terminated bus topology is used as described above. The average temperature of the wire must not exceed +55 C, although individual segments of wire may be as hot as +85 C. 8
4.4 Network segments Routers In a TLON network it is recommendable to use routers. These units increase the maximum cable length and provides a galvanic isolation between the segments. If a TLON network only consists of one segment and a short circuit occurs, this will effect every control unit in the network. The control units will still work stand-alone but no communication will occur between them. Fault messages will be generated in all control units. Instead, if there are more than one segment, the short circuit will only effect the communication between the control units in the actual segment, the communication between control units in other segments are not effected. Naturally fault messages will be generated in every control unit. If there are more than one segment in the TLON network it may be more easy to locate and service faults on the network e.g. disturbances etc. If routers are used, only messages with a valid CRC code will be forward between the segments For these reasons it is recommended to limit the number of EBL512 control units to six, in one segment. Note! Do not use physical repeaters (also called physical layer repeater) in a TLON network. The physical repeater forwards all messages across in both directions regardless of the destination and regardless of the message CRC code. The physical repeater also introduce a delay of the transmitted packets. This delay may increase the collision rate. 12 4.4.2 The two segments network A TLON network that only consists of two segments is achieved with one router. The router connect the two segments. Multiple routers connecting same two segments is called looping topologies. Looping topologies may cause an endless looping of forwarded messages and are on that account not recommended. R EBL512 EBL512 EBL512 EBL512 R EBL512 EBL512 EBL512 EBL512 Figure 5. Looping topologies are not recommended. Schematic drawing. 10
4.4.3 The backbone net If a TLON network consists of more than two segments, it is recommended to use the so-called backbone architecture. The recommended standard of the backbone net, for twisted par, is FTT-10. Since a short circuit on the backbone net will effect the communications between all segments it is recommended to keep the backbone net as short as possible. It is not recommendable to connect the same two segments with more multiple routers (i.e. looping topology ). A backbone net may preferably consist of a fiber optic segment, see section 4.5. 14 4.4.4 To power the router Since the routers are vital components in the TLON network it is recommended to use a monitored power source e.g. the 24V output of the EBL512 control units or the external power supply ROUTER Connect to EBL512 / V F1 LON A F2 LON A F1 LON B F2 LON B 24V AC/DC 24V AC/DC Figure 7. It is recommended to use the 24V output of EBL512 or external power supply 3366 to power the router. 12
4.5 Fiber optic network With a Fiber Optic/Twisted Pair LonWorks Router it is possible to connect an FTT-10 segment to a LonWorks fiber optic segment. In this case EBL512 control units are connected to FTT-10 segments. With a Fiber Optic/Twisted Pair LonWorks Router the FTT-10 segments are connected to the fiber optic segment. The topology is the same as in the section 4.4.3; in this case, the fiber optic segment is the backbone net. The are Fiber Optic/Twisted Pair LonWorks Routers are stringed together in a daisy-chain fashion. There is no need to put terminators on an optical fiber segment. The recommended standards are: Fiber: 62.5/125 micron multimode fibre Transceiver parameter: FO /140 micron multimode fibre 9.0 micron singlemode fibre Optical wavelength 880nm multimode 1320nm multimode 1310nm singlemode The maximum distance between the Fiber Optic/Twisted Pair Lon- Works Routers varies between 3 km and 30 km depending on the type of fibre.. 13
