2 What is sustainable?

3 The definition is well known "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." But how to apply it?

4 But how to apply it? The main factor to measure is the time. How long does it take to the exploited resource to be renewed?

5 But how to apply it? The main factor to measure is the time. The time concept is well known and used is forestry for example. What about the saltworks?

6 What about the saltworks? Saltworks have an annual cycle from the salt extraction point of view. From the tourism point of view they depend from their biodiversity not from the salt as mineral. In these sense the time span to consider is the time necessary to recover the Biodiversity in case of loss.

11 The project produced Guideline for sustainable valorization of saltworks. The main activities considered are sustainable: Management of the area Salt production Carrying capacity for tourism Marketing and promotion

12 Currently not all the activities are fully exploited to the maximum level. Are there other sustainable activities?

13 Are there other sustainable activities? In Black sea saltworks exploit other two resources: 1) Medicinal mud 2) Lye (concentrated solution, produced during the salt extraction, rich in microelements such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, chlorine, bromine, sulphates, etc..

14 Are there other sustainable activities? In Black sea saltworks exploit other two resources: 1) Medicinal mud Mud is used both for skin cure and beauty treatment (SPA), that is another increase in tourism.

15 Are there other sustainable activities? In Black sea saltworks exploit other two resources: 2) Lye is used in SPA and in toothpaste!

16 CONCLUSION Saltworks are a very good example of sustainable development Traditional activities currently are not fully exploited; Salworks hold potentially new economic activities not yet exploited in this region.
