1 OLNEY THEATRE CENTER Apprentice Training Program Season
2 ABOUT THE PROGRAM Apprenticeships last one year, from June to June or September to September, depending on the department. Each class of full-time apprentices plays an essential role in Olney Theatre Center operations. Working in every facet of the organization, apprentices learn standards of professionalism while building their resumes and portfolios and forging connections within the theater community. Our program offers emerging theater artists a bridge between the university and the profession, developing skills by working alongside world-class designers and directors. Apprentices also have the opportunity to work with the Director of Education to complete a Capstone Project tailored to enhance their individual goals. As an apprentice, you will: Live and work together in a vibrant artistic community. On-site housing includes shared bath and communal kitchen, living room, and laundry. Take advantage of the Washington, DC theater scene, the nation s second-largest theater market. Develop marketable skills and meet people from area theaters. Benefit from working directly with the resident staff, in addition to more than 300 visiting professional artists. Receive complimentary tickets to Olney Theatre Center productions. Earn a $150 weekly stipend. Have shared use of company vehicles.
3 ABOUT OLNEY THEATRE CENTER Located just north of Washington, DC in Montgomery County, Maryland, Olney Theatre Center is an award-winning regional institution with a 78-year history. Olney Theatre Center is one of two companies in the country to operate under a Council of Stock Theaters (COST) contract with Actors Equity Association (AEA) but we have evolved far beyond our summer-stock beginnings. The OTC campus boasts two proscenium stages, a black-box laboratory, an outdoor stage, and a rehearsal hall, along with administrative offices, fully equipped scenery and costume shops, and rent-free residences. In , Olney Theatre Center will be producing four musicals, two new plays, great stories by Pulitzer Prize winners, and the launch of the 68th season of the country s longest-running touring company, National Players. MISSION Olney Theatre Center produces and presents extraordinary theater on its four-theater campus for an ever-more diverse set of audiences in our community, and educates the next generation of theatermakers to follow in our footsteps. VISION We strive every day to unleash the creative potential of our artists and audiences, and in so doing, become Maryland s premier center for theater performance and education. FRANK LOESSER S GUYS AND DOLLS Stage Management Stage Management Apprentices work as assistant stage managers and run crew alongside Actors Equity Association (AEA) stage managers and actors. Apprentices assist during the stage manager s prep week, in rehearsals, and through running the show. When not assigned to a show, apprentices assist with office work and other areas of production. Candidates should have excellent organizational and communication skills. Stage Management Apprentices are eligible to join the Equity Membership Candidacy Program (EMC) and earn EMC points for each week of rehearsal and performance.
8 One of the great aspects of the apprentice program here is the amount of responsibility the apprentices carry. From day one of my apprenticeship I was put in charge of projects and duties specifically related to my field. I think the amount of responsibility I have been given here is far more than any other out there, I am able to say that I company managed a production, and was vital to the inner workings of this theater. - Elana Lantry, current Company Management Apprentice The stage management apprenticeship is hands-on training unlike anywhere else. Working at Olney is being in a training bubble for a year, living with other apprentices and strengthening your skills. What really impressed me was that the past SM apprentices I met were constantly getting jobs in DC. Olney is a great place to work and meet people to keep you working. - Claire Carden, Stage Management Apprentice NYC-based stage manager and production assistant on Broadway To apply your resume, along with a cover letter and three professional references to apprenticeships@olneytheatre.org by March 1.
