1 General Holiday Programs Toys for Tots From October through December, TOT collects new toys for children whose parents cannot afford Christmas gifts. To register: go to and click on the request toys tab. A list of local nonprofit distribution agencies will be available after November 23. Contact an agency close to you and try to make your request by December 10. Salvation Army The Salvation Army provides food and toy assistance. To register for Toy Shop: go online at or call Monday-Friday, 9 a.m-4 p.m. The 2010 Toy Shop is open until December 9. Toy Shop is a collaboration of churches and agencies working together to register families for Christmas resources. When you complete the form, you will be assigned to an agency that will serve you and instruct you on how to pick up toys. Who is eligible: Residents of the 10-county metro area (Minnesota) With a child or children up to age 14 With an active address (for online registration) With a home address where you receive mail Those not registered for Christmas assistance anywhere else Those able to show proof of address and ID for every child when you pick up your toys To register for Holiday Food Baskets: contact your Salvation Army Social Service Office. You ll find the number at Dakota County
2 Neighbors, Inc. Holiday Program provides the ingredients for a holiday meal, as well as toys and clothing for children. Who is eligible: Residents of Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Mendota Heights, South Sunfish Lake, or West St. Paul. To apply: Applications are taken in person from November 3 through Monday, December 15, between 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 to 4 p.m. (Application deadline on 12/15 ends at noon.) To receive an application, go to th Ave. South, South second floor, and bring: Picture identification Current utility bill, from Xcel, Qwest, Comcast, etc. for November or December; name on bill must match picture ID Bring a birth certificate for each child school age or younger, or proof of child from Dakota County, or a letter from the school they attend listing your name and child s name Proof of income for the past 30 days for every adult in the household (pay stubs, bank statement or proof from Dakota County this includes child support payment and any Social Security income for children. Baskets of Hope Baskets of Hope distributes free holiday meals to low-income households who otherwise would not be able to purchase and cook a holiday meal at home. Each basket contains turkey, pie, vegetables, fruit, bread, and more. EFN distributes the boxes through partner food shelves in November and December. Baskets of Hope started seven years ago and during its history has distributed 26,070 baskets to 175,000 individuals. EFN plans to distribute 5,300 baskets to local families facing hunger Volunteer or Refer Union Gospel Mission 77 East 9th St Website Every Thanksgiving, the UGM provides a hot meal and warm fellowship to thousands of people, More Importantly, UGM serves up over 400,000 free meals each year. In order to serve so many in need, the UGM depends on volunteers to help prepare, serve, clean up and provide fellowship, etc. Contact UGM to see what way you can best give back and help those who are struggling.
3 Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels Cretin-Derham High School 550 South Albert This organization prepares and delivers over 14,000 hot Thanksgiving meals complete with all the trimmings including, turkey, cranberries, dressing, peas, potatoes, rolls, pumpkin pie and milk. These meals are distributed to over 2,700 families in need across the metro between 8:00 a.m. and Noon on Thanksgiving Day. Many, many volunteers are needed to accomplish this. St. Matthew Lutheran Church 4101 Washington St. NE Columbia Heights, Website St. Matthew serves a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings from 11:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m. Call to volunteer to help with this meal or to provide transportation to and from the meal. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) 1845 E. Lake St, 1295 Bandana Blvd. N. Suite 165, Website LBFE are looking for volunteers who can help with the large Thanksgiving meal hosted by LBFE. They need volunteers to drive diners to and from the event, prepare the meal, serve the meal, spend time visiting with those dining and deliver meals to those who are home-bound. You can find more information about these and other volunteer opportunities at the above website. Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP) 9728 Irving Ave. S. Bloomington, Website VEAP s goal is to meet basic needs and build stronger communities. VEAP stocks groceries and certificates to enable families to maintain their own traditional holiday celebration. They also provide hot holiday meals and fellowship delivered to elderly and disable who would otherwise be alone on the holidays. VEAP is always in need of volunteers, but especially at the holidays. You can register to volunteer to stock, pack and distribute food or goods, help with the
4 Holiday Store events, host a collections drive, drive the VEAP van or your own vehicle to deliver holiday meals, etc. by going to the VEAP website listed above. Salvation Army 2445 Prior Ave N. Roseville, Website This is the start of a very busy season for the Salvation Army. In November, volunteers can start assisting with the Toys Shop Family Registration by entering data and taking phone registrations from families needing assistance. Of course, November is also the start of the Bell Ringer/Red Kettle Campaign. To sign up to be a bell ringer, call or check the website above. The Unseen Angels provide traditional Thanksgiving meals to families in need. We knew of families that were not going to be able to have traditional Thanksgiving meals. Friends and family pooled our resources, time, food and energy to provide and deliver full traditional meals to needy families. Send us a meal request Helping feed North Minneapolis The people of Minnesota have a long-standing history of concern and generosity when it comes to helping those who are hungry and in need. NorthPoint's Emergency Food Shelf embodies that concern in North Minneapolis. NorthPoint's Emergency Food Shelf has steadily grown over the years as the need to feed the hungry has increased. The food distributed by our food shelf comes from donations of food and/or cash to purchase food. Our support comes from the State of Minnesota, various churches, businesses, organizations and individuals that share a common concern: Hunger.
5 Food Shelf Services: Monthly food supply: - three to four day supply of food every 30 days Emergency food: Overnight packages for clients awaiting registration or from outside the service area Non-food items: Miscellaneous nonfood items with food request Baby food/diapers: 3-4 day supply of baby food and/or diapers, with a food request Fresh produce distribution: Free distribution of produce to the public, a summer activity that runs every Friday from May through the end of September The Food Shelf is open: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Wednesdays 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Fridays Closed Intake/re-registration hours: M, T, Th 9 am - 2 pm Wed 11 am - 5 pm (Intakes stop one full hour before the food shelf closes) For more information about NorthPoint's Food Shelf, call
