The 2011 ATAR cut-offs for each course provide a guide for 2012 entry and are listed in the course entries on the following pages. Guaranteed entry ATAR Achieve an ATAR equal to or above the published guaranteed entry ATAR and you will be guaranteed a place at Flinders. Midwifery encompasses the autonomous and collaborative care of women, families and the community. Midwives are accountable and responsible professionals who provide support, care and advice to women before, during and after childbirth. The role is challenging, varied and highly specialised. The Bachelor of Midwifery produces graduates who: > > work in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period and provide care for the newborn and the mother; > > are reflective about practice and have well-developed clinical reasoning skills; > > understand how social, environmental and economic factors impact on midwifery practice; > > reach the competency levels set by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council s National Competency Standards for the Midwife. The program of study reflects the philosophy that midwifery is a profession in its own right. It provides learning opportunities that will prepare you to function as a safe and competent women-centred midwife who is adaptable to different models of care and context of practice and who will be able to respond to changing health care needs and consumer demands. Our graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia to practise in the role of a Registered Midwife. Flinders University s School of Nursing and Midwifery was the first to offer a Bachelor of Midwifery program in Australia in 1997 and has been at the forefront of midwifery innovation and development in Australia ever since. We have a strong commitment to excellence in midwifery education, research and practice and work to develop strong links with the midwifery profession in metropolitan and rural areas of Australia. We offer innovative practice-based education and aim to connect research, practice and teaching so that each informs the other. Our academic staff work closely with external clinical and community agency partners to create a curriculum and student practice that are informed by primary health care principles and demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism. 02

5 Study program The course offers a number of pathways catering for students with varying levels of experience and backgrounds. The program is highly structured and combines clinical practice with topics such as the biophysical and psychosocial sciences, maternal and infant assessment and an evidence-based approach to midwifery practice. Pre-Registration The Bachelor of Midwifery (Pre-Registration) is a pathway for candidates with no previous formal midwifery qualifications or for enrolled nurses who would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Midwife. In each year of the program, you will have the opportunity to follow identified women through their experience of pregnancy and childbirth in a variety of settings, including rural and remote areas. First Year provides an introduction to clinical practice together with the scientific basis of midwifery and research skills, communication and maternal and infant assessment. You will also study the sociology of midwifery and the role of the midwife. In Second Year you will continue to develop midwifery skills and focus on family dynamics, nutrition, pharmacology and the complexities of childbirth. In Third Year you will explore managing practice and working in communities, and draw on the knowledge gained in the previous years to demonstrate your ability to work in the role of a Registered Midwife. There will be a focus on Indigenous health issues, midwifery research and practicum. Registered Nurse Entry Course length: 1.5 years full-time or equivalent part-time. Gradstart Code: 2BP001. The Bachelor of Midwifery (Registered Nurse Entry) is a pathway for candidates who are graduates of a nursing degree and/or hold a current practising certificate as a Registered Nurse who would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Midwife. This pathway aims to build on knowledge and skills gained from previous tertiary qualifications/skills in nursing and to develop these into a midwifery practice context to prepare students to practice in the role of a Registered Midwife. Registered Midwife Entry Course length: 1 year full-time or equivalent part-time. Gradstart Code: 2BP005. The Bachelor of Midwifery (Registered Midwife Entry) is a pathway for candidates who are already eligible for registration as a Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and hold a current practising certificate who would like to upgrade their qualifications to a midwifery degree. Clinical placements Clinical placement is undertaken in the Pre-Registration and the Registered Nurse Entry pathways. These clinical placements are in agencies and hospitals in Adelaide and may include shift work. The full-time workload is about 40 hours per week, including classes, private study, assignment preparation and follow-through experiences. This may be spread over the whole year to ensure opportunities for continuity of care and relevant experience. When undertaking topics that require a clinical placement you must meet the following requirements of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to demonstrate fitness for practice: > > When you register as a student, you must make a self-declaration to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as to your fitness to practise. > > Where there is a pre-existing illness or disability such that your ability to practise is impaired, you will advise the Topic Coordinator so that where possible a modified placement that will still meet the objectives of the topic can be arranged in consultation with you. > > You are also required to provide an up-to-date immunisation record before undertaking clinical placement. 03

6 >Midwifery continued Student registration and professional recognition Under the terms of Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (South Australia) Act 2010, as a nursing and midwifery student enrolled in a course that provides a qualification for registration you are required (as a condition of your enrolment at the University) to register as a student with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of South Australia for the duration of your nursing studies. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. For more information on registration go to: Career opportunities Midwives have an extensive range of career opportunities in hospitals and in the community. Hospitals offer a number of career options and provide an opportunity to work in different settings across Australia and overseas. Community-based options include: work in community services, community health centres, youth and women s shelters or teaching in higher education. Further career opportunities for midwives include: self-employment, home-based services, health agencies, doctors surgeries, remote and rural areas, nursing agencies, international aid agencies and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Modern nurses play an important role in health promotion, maintenance and education, as well as in traditional patient care and the restoration of health. The Nursing program at Flinders produces graduates who can function in a variety of clinical settings and roles, have well-developed clinical reasoning skills, and understand that professional practice demands life-long learning. You will be taught how social, environmental and economic factors affect health; to access, evaluate and communicate information; and to negotiate with people from a variety of backgrounds and understand cultural differences and their relationship to health. The course is designed to help you reach the competency levels set by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council to practice in the role of a Registered Nurse. Emphasis is placed on preparing you to manage rapid technological and social change and respond to ethical and legal demands. Our aim is to prepare nurses who are reflective about practice and have well-developed clinical reasoning skills. Our graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. 8 Study program Flinders offers a number of pathways to a Bachelor of Nursing that cater for students with varying levels of experience and backgrounds. The course is highly structured and combines clinical practice with topics addressing ethics, law and biophysical and psychosocial sciences. Pre-Registration The Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration) is a pathway for students with no previous formal nursing qualifications, for enrolled nurses and/or for psychiatric/mental health/ mental deficiency nurses who would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. It requires three years of full-time study or the equivalent part-time in the internal mode only. This pathway is also offered at our Riverland Campus. First Year aims to introduce you to clinical practice together with the scientific basis of nursing with communication, research skills and the role of the nurse in the health care system. During Second Year you will continue to develop nursing skills and relate all aspects of body function with nursing practice, and continue gaining clinical experience in various health care settings. In Third Year you will explore more complex health issues including topics such as Indigenous Health Issues for Nurses and Midwives and Nursing in a Socio-political Context and draw on the knowledge gained in the previous years to demonstrate your ability to work in the role of a Registered Nurse. Graduate Entry Course length: 2 years full-time or equivalent part-time in internal mode only. Gradstart Code: 2BG007. The Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) is an advanced nursing pathway for graduates of a degree in academic areas other than nursing who would like opportunities in a new career and would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. First Year aims to build on writing and research skills gained from previous tertiary qualifications and to develop these into a nursing practice context while introducing clinical practice in various health care settings. Studies include pathophysiology and pharmacology, ethics and law as applied to nursing and clinical laboratory sessions. In Second Year you will explore more complex issues in nursing such as health sociology, mental health and mental illness and indigenous health issues and draw on the knowledge gained in the previous year to demonstrate your ability to work in the role of a Registered Nurse. Registered Nurse Entry Course length: 1 year full-time or equivalent part-time in internal mode only. Mid-year entry only. Gradstart Code: 2BP002. The Bachelor of Nursing (Registered Nurse Entry) is a pathway for candidates who are qualified and registered/licensed nurses overseas who would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. The year of study aims to build on and develop the nursing skills of overseas trained and qualified nurses and prepare them to join the Australian workforce in the role of a Registered Nurse. Studies include nursing research skills, the scientific basis of nursing, health psychology and health sociology, professional nursing studies and clinical experience in various health care settings. 06

9 >Nursing continued Re-Entry Course length: 1 year full-time or equivalent part-time in internal mode only. Mid-year entry only. Gradstart Code: 2BP003. The Bachelor of Nursing (Re-Entry) is a pathway for candidates with prior Australian nursing registration who are no longer eligible to hold a current practising certificate and must complete a re-entry course to rejoin the nursing workforce as a Registered Nurse. The year of study aims to renew and develop the nursing skills of previously registered nurses and to prepare them to rejoin the nursing workforce. Studies include nursing and research skills, the scientific basis of nursing, health psychology and health sociology and clinical experience in various health care settings. Registered Midwife Entry Course length: 1.5 years full-time or equivalent part-time in internal mode only. Mid-year entry only. Gradstart Code: 2BP004. The Bachelor of Nursing (Registered Midwife Entry) is a pathway for candidates who are graduates of a midwifery degree and/ or hold a current practising certificate as a registered midwife who would like to become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse. The pathway aims to build on knowledge and skills gained from previous tertiary qualifications in midwifery and to develop these into a nursing practice context to prepare you to practise in the role of a Registered Nurse. Clinical placement Clinical placement is undertaken in all of the above pathways in agencies and hospitals in Adelaide and involves shift work. The full-time workload is approximately 35 hours per week spread across 13 weeks of the semester. This includes time spent attending classes on campus, private study, assignment research and writing and exam preparation. 10 Combined degrees You can combine the Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration) with the Bachelor of Health Sciences: Bachelor of Health Sciences/ Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration) 4 years SATAC Code: You will meet the requirements to become eligible for nursing registration and complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences with a specialty stream in Health Education and Promotion, Health Management, Disability and Community Rehabilitation, or Mental Health Nursing. Career opportunities Nurses have career opportunities in hospitals and the community in roles such as aged care or gerontic nurses, emergency nurses, critical care nurses, neonatal intensive care nurses, maternal and child health nurses, paediatric nurses, perioperative nurses, oncology nurses, palliative care nurses, mental health nurses, remote area nurses, occupational health nurses, research nurses and general practice nurses. Hospitals, whether private or public, offer a number of career options and provide an opportunity to work in different settings in cities across Australia, regional areas and overseas. Hospitals also provide nurses with the opportunity to specialise in particular clinical areas of interest. Areas outside of hospital wards also offer nurses career opportunities in radiology, pathology, theatres, management, education, research and clinics. The community offers a number of career options and provides an opportunity to work in community health services, district nursing, primary care, schools or teaching in higher education. SATAC Code: (Honours) The Biotechnology specialisation, available in the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Honours), is recognised as a leading biotechnology degree in Australia. Biotechnology is the use of living organisms for health, social or economic purposes. This course has a strong business component with emphasis on enterprise management, intellectual property protection, marketing, and the legal, ethical and social aspects of biotechnology. can be found in the Flinders Science Disability and Developmental Education 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time. SATAC Code: (external) The Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education will help you develop specialist human service skills in areas including counselling, rehabilitation, case management, skill development and individual support. The course will prepare you for a rewarding career that enables you to make an important difference in people s lives. This course is also offered externally. Engineering (Biomedical) Prerequisites: SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Studies or Mathematical Methods. Knowledge of SACE Stage 2 Physics is assumed. Engineering (Biomedical) 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time. SATAC Code: Engineering (Biomedical)/MEng (Biomedical) 5 years full-time or equivalent part-time. SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) involves using electronics and computer systems to improve health care and health services to enhance the quality of human life. You will gain a solid education in engineering and medical science and develop skills to investigate, plan, design, manufacture and maintain systems and equipment used in all aspects of health care. All students undertake Flinders University s nationally recognised 20-week industry placement. Masters allows you to undertake more specialist study, particularly in the medical topics and graduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) and a Master of Engineering (Biomedical). SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Health Sciences/Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health Practice prepares you for a career in environmental health which can include monitoring and maintaining health standards in relation to air, food and water quality, soil pollution, waste management, noise pollution, pest control, housing and the use of hazardous substances. Graduates of this pathway will be awarded a Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health Practice. Health Sciences 3 years full-time or equivalent part-time. 4 years with Honours. Prerequisites: None. No assumed knowledge. SATAC Code: (combined degrees) The Bachelor of Health Sciences combines health-related topics with specialised studies. It caters for a wide range of careers and equips you with transferable, industry relevant skills. The course is multidisciplinary and there are multiple majors available. You can study: disability, health education and promotion, health management, the life sciences, and nutrition. The course gives you a deeper understanding of the roles and functions of various health professions and provides internship opportunities with industry placements in a variety of areas

12 Medical Science 3 years full-time or equivalent part-time. 4 years with Honours. Prerequisites: None. No assumed knowledge. SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Medical Science offers a specialised program for those seeking work as medical science professionals in areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, nutrition, pharmacology, physiology, and toxicology. The course offers a basis for postgraduate studies in radiology, pathology, pharmacology and other fields. It is also a preparation for the graduate-entry medical and health programs at Flinders. Medicine/Surgery 6 years full-time. Prerequisites: None. Applicants must complete the UMAT. SATAC Code: To complement graduate-entry to our Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS), Flinders offers an undergraduate pathway through the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences. You will undertake the first two years of an undergraduate degree and by maintaining a GPA of at least 5 will be guaranteed entry to the BMBS. SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics is designed to produce nutritionists and dietitians who interpret scientific knowledge about food then translate it into practical information to help people change their eating habits and improve their health. You will gain knowledge about the nature, management and prevention of diet-related diseases and the social and psychological factors that influence what people eat. Occupational Therapy 5 years full-time only. Prerequisites: None. Knowledge of SACE Stage 2 Biology is assumed. SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Occupational Therapy program provides you with the skills and knowledge to assess and treat people who have limited ability in daily activities because of illness, injury or circumstance. You will develop skills in the therapeutic use of occupations, individual and group assessment, and in intervention techniques. Supervised clinical placements are integral to the course and will enable you to develop a sound basis for professional practice. Optometry 5 years full-time only. Prerequisites: None. Knowledge of Stage 2 Chemistry and Physics is assumed. Applicants must complete the UMAT. SATAC Code: The Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science)/Master of Optometry gives you a fundamental grounding in science with a specialisation in Vision Sciences, where you will study the visual system and factors that influence sight in preparation for intensive study and clinical experience in optometry.
