6 Medical Science Griffith University s biomedical science, medical science, medical laboratory science and health science degrees have been designed to provide pathways to a variety of professional careers in medicine, medical research, medical laboratory science and allied health services. Because of the valuable role biomedical science plays in modern medicine, graduates are highly regarded by hospitals, health departments, biomedical research institutes, university and government research organisations as well as the pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and other health-related industries. It is an extremely exciting time to be studying Health at Griffith and I can t think of anywhere else where there are so many opportunities for students coming through, she said. * International students and any student whose prior education (school or university) has been undertaken outside of Australia are recommended to check with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) regarding their eligibility for registration in Australia (particularly with regards to English language requirements). 7 Medicine The Griffith University graduate-entry medical program (accredited by the Australian Medical Council) was developed to serve the needs of the, Brisbane and South-East Queensland and incorporates a strong community focus. Throughout this program most learning occurs in small group settings, using problem-based learning and our state-of-the-art clinical skills centre. Students spend the final two years of the program in off-campus health care services including hospitals and general practices. Students also have the opportunity to undertake overseas electives. These broad experiences enable students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed as a medical practitioner. Students will have the opportunity to undertake clinical training in the new University Hospital which is due to open in September 2013 adjacent to Griffith University s campus. Entry into the Griffith University medical program is highly competitive. 8 Midwifery With a degree informed by leading research and developed by internationally-renowned midwifery experts, Griffith University is committed to the development of the next generation of the midwifery workforce. Taught by expert midwives, our innovative, fully-accredited and flexible midwifery program meets international standards for midwifery education. Our program blends online learning with two intensive blocks of on-campus study and on-the-job training in hospitals and community settings including the opportunity to take up an international or rural and remote placement. I chose the Griffith midwifery program because I knew it was very flexible with external and online study options, which is great as a parent, she said. 10 Nutrition and Dietetics Nutritionists and dietitians are health professionals who improve the health of individuals, communities and populations by applying an understanding of human nutrition that is informed by knowledge of biological, behavioural, and social sciences. Griffith University s nutrition and dietetics programs have a national and international reputation for quality and teaching innovation, award-winning educators, a high degree of engagement of our academic staff within the nutrition and dietetics profession, and a commitment to nutrition and dietetics research. Our students develop valuable work-ready skills through industry placements which are a key feature of all of our degree programs. Our nutrition and dietetics programs will be taught in the new $150 million Griffith Health Centre (opening mid 2013) which features a nutrition and dietetics clinic. Melanie completed four months of study at the University of Guelph in Canada where she trained with world-class athletes. I have always wanted to travel so once I heard about the possibility of studying overseas I jumped at the opportunity, she said. *Previous degree must include successful completion of biochemistry and physiology at second year Science level (or equivalent). 9

11 Occupational Therapy Griffith University will offer a new Occupational Therapy*^ in 2014 at the campus. Occupational therapists enable people to do the activities (occupations) they need or want to do in order to live a meaningful life but have difficulty with due to illness, injury or other disadvantages. They are creative health professionals who find solutions by adapting environments, modifying activities, or facilitating the development of new skills in collaboration with the client and other health professionals. Clients could be individuals, groups or even entire communities. The degree will have a strong focus on the latest developments in the profession, work placements, and community connections to prepare graduates to work in new areas of practice in addition to health and education. There is a continuing need in Australia for occupational therapists with demand expected to continue to grow strongly. Graduates will be prepared for work in hospitals, homeless shelters, refugee detention centres, universities and government departments. They will also be able to work with individuals, groups and communities in social enterprises, charities, large companies, schools and prisons. In fact, graduates will be prepared to work in any area that occupational therapy could make a difference, allowing graduates to create the career they want. 12 Pharmacy Griffith offers innovative and integrated degrees in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences that are responsive to the needs of the profession and the community. There are several pathways towards registration as a pharmacist, through Griffith s Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science / Master of Pharmacy articulated degree. For graduates seeking career pathways in medical research, academia, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical sales or postgraduate medicine, the Pharmaceutical Science and the Pharmaceutical Science / Business double degree are excellent options. Griffith was the first Australian university to be accredited by the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy by embedding the Association s Stage 1 training into the Master of Pharmacy program, and also provides hands-on sterile manufacturing training in dedicated facilities. Brenton completed a Psychology (Honours) at Griffith in 2010 before moving into the PhD within the School of Applied Psychology. I found that my strengths and knowledge were better suited towards research methods and statistics as opposed to clinical or counselling psychology. * Students who have previously completed a university degree in any field other than psychology can apply for entry into Griffith University s Bachelor of Psychological Science graduate entry. 15 Public Health and Environmental Health Public health is the study and management of human health in the wider community and environment. Public health professionals have a deep understanding of how we can promote good health and wellbeing, protect ourselves against injury and disease, prevent illness and better understand public health hazards and environmental health issues in the wider community. Successful public health interventions and solutions extend into almost every aspect of human life, as issues such as climate change, the spread of infectious diseases, community and workplace safety, obesity and pollution demand more attention and resources. The preventative focus of public health aims to promote health and reduce the demands on our health system and the human impact on our environment. It also taught me about project management and communication, said Caitlin who now works part-time as a Have Fun Be Healthy facilitator for a playgroup. # Accreditation for Griffith s Environmental Health degree is being sought with Environmental Health Australia. 14

16 Speech Pathology Griffith University s Master of Speech Pathology will equip graduates to begin practice as a highly-competent and work-ready speech pathologist in a wide range of health, community and education settings. This degree encourages personal and professional development through a problem-based learning curriculum with active learning in small groups and practical work placements that facilitate the integration of theory and practice. Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership of Speech Pathology Australia* and to work as a fully-accredited speech pathologist. Career opportunities exist in a variety of areas including hospitals, community health centres, rehabilitation centres, schools (kindergarten to high school), nursing homes, disability services and in private practice. 17 Health Professional Education Griffith University s health professional education programs provide professional development for clinical, work-based or professional practice educators from all areas of health. These programs provide educators with the essential skills required to facilitate effective learning in clinical, field or professional practice settings in the health disciplines. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is Griffith s highest research training degree. Students undertake this program in the school or research centre that specialises in their chosen area of research. What is an MPhil? The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded on the basis of a thesis prepared under supervision, which presents the results of original research, demonstrating the candidate s knowledge of the research topic.
