13 AMY JAENSCH IS A LEVEL 1 REGISTERED NURSE IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT FLINDERS MEDICAL CENTRE. I M VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT NURSING, AND ABOUT MAKING A HARD TIME FOR SOME PEOPLE A LITTLE BIT BRIGHTER. REGISTERED NURSE AT FLINDERS MEDICAL CENTRE (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) FLINDERS NURSING GRADUATE After school, Amy didn t know what she wanted to do. She worked in administration for a few years until a friend suggested nursing. Amy knew that Flinders had the best reputation in nursing and was also affiliated with Flinders Medical Centre. After doing her research, Amy saw that Flinders had the best mix of theory and practical teaching, offering clinical placements from first year and a lot more hands-on training. Amy greatly enjoyed studying at Flinders. She appreciated the independence and the selfresponsibility, and found great support and assistance from the teaching staff. Amy valued the flexibility of the course. When I looked into it, I could do all my subjects in two days per week and also work which I needed to do. It was full-on, but I figured that if I planned my time well, I could still complete my degree in three years. Practical experience helped Amy build skills and time-management in the daily routine of nursing. Working in a hospital setting throughout the degree backed up and helped put into practice what I d learned; it pulled everything together. Amy picked up many extra skills through this process. It really prepared me for going into the work place. Upon completion of her graduate program, Amy was quickly offered a position by Flinders Medical Centre. The emergency department is organised chaos; it s very fastpaced. I love it. Nursing s such a challenge and has so much variety; you re always learning, there s never one thing the same. It ll never be a routine job.

14 Studying in the Riverland offers you a distinct rural focus and provides you with many opportunities for professional and personal development. Personally, it provides you with the chance to experience a different lifestyle and meet new people. Professionally, getting involved in the diversity and variety offered by rural practice helps you to develop high levels of professional competence, independence, resourcefulness and flexibility. 19 NICKI BIERMANN IS A FLINDERS MIDWIFERY GRADUATE. THE DEGREE INSTILLED IN HER AN APPRECIATION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE WORK THAT MIDWIVES DO. MIDWIFE AT GOULBURN VALLEY HEALTH (VICTORIA) FLINDERS MIDWIFERY GRADUATE I m passionate about supporting women and families during their child-bearing years. There is a very deep responsibility and there is a satisfaction knowing that you along with the team needed to provide a safe birth are caring for two lives. Nicki had some experience working with women in labour, but wanted to support her work with a qualification. The quality of the academic staff at Flinders attracted her to the course, and she moved from Sydney to Adelaide to study a Bachelor of Midwifery. To be a part of a birth is both an honour and a privilege. Over the years I was practising as a doula a personal attendant to women in labour. I had an inquiring mind, so I wanted to become a professional in the area of midwifery. At the time I was living in Sydney and I decided to come to Flinders University. The academic profiles of the associate professors really appealed to me and also the cost of living in Adelaide was much better. Nicki found that the course was a growing experience for her and her fellow students, and that Flinders provided the support she needed to overcome the challenges that study presented. I had studied at other universities but my Flinders degree was above and beyond anything I had studied before. A lot of my peer group found it quite a personal journey to become a midwife, and access to the academic staff as mentors was invaluable. Beyond the clinical knowledge, the support they gave me to grow into my role as a midwife was priceless.
