Examinations... The major differences between studying at NTU and Uppsala University was probably how the course registration system worked. At NTU you had the opportunity to drop and add courses during the first two weeks of the semester. In Uppsala the courses are distributed over two periods during one semester, but at NTU the courses went on parallel during the whole semester. This made it very intense during the end of the semester, since all of final exams and presentations came at the same time. The quality of the courses was varying. In some courses I found the professors to have unrealistic expectations of you. But all of my professors were easy to talk to and very helpful if you had any concerns. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. The reception when you arrived was good. There was an orientation lecture for the new exchange students held before the courses started where you got a lot information about issues about the VISA, accommodation, course registration system etc. There was also a campus tour and a welcome party held. When you applied to NTU you could choose whether you wanted a student volunteer or not. I got one and he helped me a lot. He showed me good restaurants around campus and helped me with many things in the beginning of the semester. Though it seemed like not all the volunteers were as dedicated as mine. 2 Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I stayed at a dorm (Prince House-NTU Shui Yuan Dorms) close to the campus, about 5 min walk. My room was a single room with bathroom, no kitchen. The dorms were divided into a boys dorm and girls dorm and there was a lodge where you could play ping pong, billiard or study. You were not allowed to have any visitors after 23:00. A tips is to go to IKEA after you got you room. You might want to buy a more comfortable mattress and pillow. I was satisfied with my accommodation, especially the location. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I found the amount of money received from CSN adequate, sek for the whole semester. The cost of living in Taiwan was much lower than Sweden. The rent per month was about 1500 sek. Since I did not have any kitchen at the dorm I principally ate all my meals out. A regular meal cost between sek. On campus it was really cheap to eat, so there is no need to bring any lunch box. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There was a variety of different clubs on campus that you could join. There was for example a mountain climbing club, make-up club, ukulele club, different kinds of martial art clubs, just to mention some. I did not really join any of them but I went on a weekend trip with a club for international students (ISIS). It was kind of nice, but pretty unorganized. Otherwise I tried to explore Taipei as much as possible during my spare time and since I had no class on Fridays I could go on longer trips around the island during the weekends. My exchange semester in Taipei was awesome. It was the first time for me in Asia and it was really interesting to experience the Taiwanese culture. The people of Taiwan were extremely friendly and helpful which made it easy to feel at home. Approval 18. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... Taiwanese teaching is less problem-focused and requires less creativity than in Sweden. Instead more emphasiz is added on memorizing facts. The teachers were good, though some of them had a lower level of English than Swedish teachers. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Do you have any tips for future students? The university dorm. Single room with bathroom. Shared kitchen, but one usually eat out in Taipei. Good price and close to uni. I m very happy with my exchange. Taiwan is a great country and the studies were mostly fun. One should make a bigger effort than I did to learn Chinese. Lots of fun exchange students from different parts of the world. Approval 18.
