1 General and specific report Lars von Seht Corvinus University of Budapest Spring semester 2015 S The report is in two parts: a general part (A) and a specific report for each subject (B). (A) General report 1. Host institution and exact dates of semester abroad Corvinus University Budapest from 1 February January Contact with home faculty, preparation and journey I went to Budapest by plane from my hometown in Germany at the day the semester officially started. I intended to go there earlier, especially since the first orientation events already started a week earlier, however I had final exams at the FEB till the last weekend of January and was therefore not able to attend these. Generally there was not much preparation beforehand, I met up with the other student from my faculty before and we decided to book a room at a Hostel in Budapest together and start searching for an apartment once we arrived there. We stayed at the Hostel Casa de la Musica, from where we started exploring the city and looked for apartments. In the period of end January and beginning February a lot of international students arrive in Budapest, there are a lot of potential apartments and people staying at Hostels, so it fairly easy to meet people in the beginning. Within 24 hours I found an apartment with another student from Corvinus University. It was a little bit more expensive than previously expected, since in general the living cost are rather low in Hungary, however in order to live in the city centre you will be paying a little more. Furthermore the Hungarian Landlords like to take advantage that nonhungarian students are willing and able to pay a little bit more rent than normal, so they do take advantage of it. However I would always recommend to only start looking for apartments once you arrived in Budapest, as I heard from other, especially noneuropean students who were scammed by fake online posts. You can find very nice flats in Budapest; they will be a little bit older than in most other European countries, but also very big which makes up for the other stuff. 3. Residence abroad Arrangements visa / residence permit Arrival and departure dates Accommodation Reception and introduction Student life, culture and leisure Language Since I am a European student I did not have to arrange any visa or residence permit, I only booked my flight and went over there. I stayed from the 1 st of January till the 31 st of May. I lived with another Erasmus student in the 8 th District, its very close to the University, only two minutes walking and also right in the city centre. Most students live in the 5 th, 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th district. This is also were most restaurants, bars, clubs or other

2 social events are located. I bought a Hungarian simcard at the Erasmus Office in the University, which also includes mobile Internet. It is very convenient to buy it there since most other exchange students buy it there as well and calls between Vodafone customers are for free. I did not have to topup my balance once throughout the whole stay. I did not get a Hungarian Bank account since I used my Dutch card, which allows withdrawing money for free in Hungary. At the beginning there are a lot of social events organized by Erasmus to show you the city and also take you out clubbing in the evenings. Further the University tells you that you have to register you address at the cities municipality, however a lot of other exchange students told me about experiences where apartment from foreign students had been robbed afterwards and I experienced that first hand as well with a fellow student, therefore I did not register with the city. The student life is very big and will keep you quite busy in the beginning. I think in total we were more than 500 exchange students at the Corvinus University, excluding the large amounts of students from other Universities. There are a lot of parties, you will get to know many people, look and explore the city and get to know the place a little better. I recommend getting a 3 or 6month metro card, however paying close attention to get the Corvinus University student card before and use your student number when registering the card to your name. I was controlled once and I used my Dutch student card till then, which initially wasn t a problem but some controllers will try to lure money out of you and use tricks and tell you that you are driving illegally. Do never pay them on the spot; even if they threaten you to call the police, it is a scam, which the city is currently dealing with. The Hungarian language is one of the most difficult languages in the world and very difficult to learn, you will be fine with English, also I had the advantage that I am German which also a lot of people speak over there. 4. Grant Amount Information on the adequacy of the grant Expenses abroad! I received 150 Euros per month, of which 70% was given me prior my arrival to Budapest, and 30% after. The amount can be considered adequate because living expenses in Budapest are rather low, however be prepared for some extra expenses such as deposits etc. 5. Study The level of the study program is not very high; this can be probably accorded to the fact that the courses taken at the University are specifically designed for exchange students. The teaching facility is very relaxed and knows that most students have a lot of extracurricular activities going on as well as travelling. Overall I did a lot less than usually in Groningen. Lectures started on the 2 nd of February and went till the first week of May. Last week was examination period. It s a little different because you can choose your examination date from a list of potential days. You get a timespan covering about 2 3 weeks. Furthermore I succeeded my exams because the study load stands no comparison to what we are being asked in Groningen. Classes offered are especially for exchange students, the list of attendants is sometimes quite small, I had one class with only seven other students. It is very nice because this way the teacher gets the chance to interact with you on a more personal level. You get to

3 know a lot of other nationalities in the courses but you do not really get to know any Hungarian students. The more credits a course has the more hours are appointed to it. I took five 6 ECTS courses. Each course contains a lecture and a tutorial; usually these courses take about 3 hours per week. Also in a lot of courses attendance is compulsory. A lot of courses also ask for assignments, such as reports or presentations frequently on which you might have to work in groups with other students. The University building is separated into the old very beautiful building a new facility, overall the standard of the facilities is very good and quite modern. I took the following courses: Managing the Multinational Enterprise International Relations 1945 to present Business Enterprise Small Up to SME International Debate Advertising Management 6. Other relevant remarks Consider if you really want to register with the city municipality, it is not necessary even though the international office will threaten you that you have to register or otherwise you will not be credited your courses, which is not true. Furthermore be careful with some Hungarian Landlords or people who try to scam you. Also get your student card right away to buy the metro card and do not let them scam you there as well. Also you are appointed a local student from the University who can potentially help you with organizing some stuff. Mine did not have to help me with any administrative matters, but I really enjoyed meeting her and she showed and taught me a lot about the city and the culture. Try to learn as much as possible, Hungarians will appreciate it if you show an active interest in their country. 7. Summary impression Budapest is an amazing to go for Erasmus to. The University is good and the outer University student life offers a lot. Since it is quite cheap you can actually afford to do a lot of stuff and I promise it will never be boring. If I would have to choose all over again I would certainly choose Budapest again. (B) Specific Report 1. Host institution and study period Corvinus University of Budapest, February 2 nd until May 31 st Lectures and literature Managing the Multinational Enterprise (6 ECTS) 3 hours per week, all after each other with a small break in between, no exam but a large final project International Relations 1945 to present (6 ECTS)

5 William Arens: Contemporary Advertising, 10th Edition., McGrawHill, Irwin, ISBN13: Content Managing the Multinational Enterprise This course addresses issues in the strategy, organisation and management of companies operating outside their home markets. At the core, the course asks: What are the practical problems of competing internationally, and how can these problems be handled effectively? The course is designed for every student who will be involved in managing and advising companies that either compete internationally or which face international competitors. Assessment: Class participation 60% Final case 40% International Relation 1945 to present This course gives a broad overview of international relations since It traces the major political, economic, and ideological patterns that have evolved in the global arena from the end of World War II to the present day. The course will consist of five parts: the West and the Cold War; the Soviet orbit; the end of colonialism and Third World nationalisms; global power: from a bipolar to a multipolar order; and the global South and emerging powers. The course will start with the date 1945 and the emergence of the two superpowers, how the Cold War was institutionalized in the forms of confrontation and coexistence. We will continue with the consolidation of one party rule in the Soviet Union and East Central Europe, and the outreach of the socialist ideology to the developing world (cases are Poland, Hungary, as well as Egypt and India). Decolonization in Asia and Africa that came in violent and nonviolent forms will form the third part of the course. (cases Indochina, Algeria, subsaharan Africa). In this part we will also cover the ArabIsraeli conflict. The fourth part covers the collapse of communism and the partly violent transition to multiparty rule in East Central Europe (cases Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia). We will finish of with the rise of new economic powers and a shift towards a multipolar order. Cases are the role of today s USA, the rise of China, and the challenges of the global South. 7 5. Relevance to Groningen study program Managing the Multinational Enterprise This course was an application of the theoretical knowledge we have already acquired previously in Groningen. Case studies have been conducted for which basic Business models such as Porter, PESTEL, etc. had to be used. International Relations 1945 to present This course was an overview of international political conflicts after the Second World War. Considering the standard country analyses that have to be conducted in order to create an in depth economic analysis of potential risks this course helped deepening a basic understanding of potential factors. Business Enterprise Start Up to SME This course was a practical application of basic theoretical business knowledge in order to create our own business plan for a potential startup. International Debate Again an overview of current international conflicts that help understanding potential risk factors when analyzing potential business ventures into foreign countries. Advertising Management A practical advertising course, that reviewed concepts that have already been dealt with in Groningen. Further a case with a real customer where we created a tailored marketing campaign for them. 6.
