1 Overview of Fine Arts The Fine Arts are among humanity s greatest aesthetic and intellectual achievements. They communicate a broad range of ideas and feelings, and have been a primary means of transmitting cultural throughout history. The arts are an integral part of every child s learning and cognitive development. The standards are written to take the students through a sequence on instruction that will allow them to understand the elements, principles, and historical and cultural context to the arts. Elementary and Middle School Structure The child will develop an awareness of creative problem solving as well continue of fine and gross motor skills. The elementary art program is developmentally appropriate at each grade level. Art classes within the middle grades expand the elementary foundation in understanding and skills in the visual arts in an exploratory manner consistent with the middle school philosophy. Main Goals of the Curriculum *Artists communicate effectively and expressively by selecting and applying appropriate art elements and principles *Artist develop the ability to think critically and solve problems creatively as part of the process of taking an artistic project from concept to completion * Artists study art to make informed critical judgments, gain knowledge about visual communication, and learn to respect the ideas of expression of themselves and others. *Artists create connections between different subject areas both within and outside the arts such as, Music, Spanish, Math, Social Studies and Language Arts
2 Art K 8 Curriculum Overview Mr. Wachter Kindergarten Color Mixing and Color Theory Students will learn about color theories and several different famous artists during this quar ter. Students will also learn how to use several different art supplies and how to manipulate the supplies. Topics: Color wheel Primary and secondary color, warm and cool colors, color mixing and blending with paint and oil pastels. Art History: Roy Lichtenstein and Pablo Picasso Pop Art and Cubism Printmaking, Mosaics and Collages Students will learn about printmaking and collages. Students will learn how to make a relief print of a fish. Students will learn about creating a collage by using pictures, shapes and colors and found objects to create three different styles of collages. The final project for the students will incorporate all the styles of art they have learned into a three piece artwork (triptych) of a sunflower (mosaic, oil pastels and watercolor) Art History: Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Eric Carle, Andrew Turner, Louise Nevelson, Gustuv Klimt. Pop Art, Collage, impressionism and found object art. 1 st Grade Ancient Art Students will learn about two specific times in art; Cave paintings and Mandalas and sand paintings. Students will learn and create their own paint just as the cave people did and create their own cave painting of themselves. The students will also learn about the ancient mandala collages and paintings by the Tibet people.
3 Optical Illusion and Murals (lines and forms) Students will learn about optical illusion are and how to create their own black and white opt art with using lines and forms Students will later create their own form by using an outline of their body in creating a mural of the entire 1 st grade. Students will learn about M.C Escher s optical illusion art and create a Tessellation from a form of their creation. Students will also create a Wasilly Kandinsky form tree using circles. 2 nd Grade Abstract and abstract relief Students will focus on Abstract works of Stewart Davis and create different styles with different art supplies. (Markers, paint, and soft pastels) Students will create two pieces of artwork, abstract of their names and a reptile relief drawing with soft pastels. 2D and 3D sculpture Students will create a 2D picture of whop they want to be when they grow up, then recreate that in a 3D sculpture by using a bottle, tape, newspaper, paint, plaster and objects for their person. Textures and Weaving Students will learn about the different techniques of weaving from different cultures around the world. The students will create their own loom and weave a small blanket with yarn 3 rd Grade One and two point perspective Students will learn about the different perspectives of space. The students will learn how to create one and two point perspective landscapes with a final project of a two point perspective city. Students will looks at city scopes and architects such as Frank Lloyd wright for inspiration. Printmaking Students will learn how to print on a linoleum block. The students will pick an endangered animal and transfer it onto a linoleum block to carve out a relief for a
4 print. The student will print four endangered animals in the style of Pop Artist Andy Warhol using complementary colors. Self Portrait Students will learn about artist Chuck Close and his style of using grids to recreate a self portrait to triple the scale of the student s actual face, just as Chuck Close paints. The students will use oil pastels to design the face with shapes. 4 th Grade Negative and positive space/ Radial Design Students will do several projects learning about negative and positive space leading up to Radial design. All these projects are cross curricular in math class. The students will learn how to create a radial design with good positive and negative space using a square of paper a design on the paper and repeating it 4 times to create the radial symmetrical design. Still life/values From past knowledge of positive and negative space the students will draw a still life of a wooden manikin. The students will look for lights and darks (shade and tints) and recreate the manikin on paper with conte crayon. Sculpture Students will create their own sculpture just as famous artist Giocometti. We will learn his technique of bronze sculpture and recreate his style with metal wire aluminum and black india ink. 5 th Grade Mixed Media/ Self Portraits The students concentrate mainly on portraits, self portraits, and color theory. The students use many different techniques to render their faces. Some examples are looking at a mirror, grid technique and digital. The students will use different art supplies (paint, oil pastel resist collage and Photoshop) to show how many different ways they can make their self portrait look so different. 6 th Grade Sculpture/2D 3D
5 Students will learn about surreal and renaissance artist Archimbodo. They will recreate his style of painting of fruit faces into a 3D plaster sculpture. The students will draw a picture then create the fruit and vegetables with plaster to real sizes. The sculpture will then be glued with hot glue to put the pieces to gather to create the large fruit face. Comic Book Students will look at the vast array of comic and cartoon artists to get inspired to create their own comic book. The comic will be story bored and created like an authentic comic book production. The theme is of their choosing but must be related to a real life occurrence. 7 th Grade Starry night problem solving The students will use there past knowledge of art history, in this case we will be discussing Vincent Van Gogh s Starry Night. The students will recreate this artwork in their own imagination and the students are able to use any art supply, from mosaic tiles to clay to even paints. The possibilities are endless. Opt Art Cube Students will learn more intense optical illusions and perspective and draw six different pictures to create a cube of optical illusion. Students will map out how all six sides intersect then draw with permanent marker. When finished the student will fold all sides together to create the cube. Pop Art Students will create a candy of their choosing in the style of any pop artist they have learned about. The Candy will be formed into a box but 10 times the size and painted in the style of the pop artist 8 th Grade The students will use acrylic paint a canvas and paint a cityscape of Chester or our school outside. The students will use there past knowledge of color theory, shading, tone and perspective to create their first cityscape from life. Yearbook And T shirt design The students will collaborate and work together to design a yearbook cover and t shirt design for our school.
6 Foam Board Sculpture Students will have a problem solving art project. The students get a piece of 20x30 foam board an xacto knife and a hot glue gun and need to use their past experience and knowledge of sculpture to create a pleasing to the eye, three dimensional sculpture. Goodbye Mural The students will collaborate on a design of a mural of their experiences at school on paper. The students will recreate with paint outside out school with paint. A final goodbye to WPCS.
