2 What are comic strips? Comic strips tell stories using a sequence of narrative cartoon panels. Comic strips are created by artists or cartoonists, to promote entertainment, thought and laughter. Where might you find comic strips? Newspapers, magazines, comic books
3 How to create a successful comic strip About layouts and panels How to tell a story using a short series of panels How to create a cartoon character
4 Some of the essential elements needed to create a comic strip include: Setting- background, layout and panels Plot- what is going to happen in your story Character- you will create your own
5 Placement- The placement of your character(s) and the images in your panels are important. The panel has been divided in thirds. Notice the 3 panels have the same character placed in different areas of the panel.
6 Background- a simple horizon line can create the illusion of space and background in your image. Be careful not to draw your line too low in the panel.

8 Narrative art is a way of telling stories or communicating messages through visual images. Narrative art goes back to early cave paintings. You can tell stories with just images alone. Artist Bill Watterson A comic strip can tell a story using a sequence of panels. You will be creating only a few panels therefore you will need to focus on the highlights of your story in each panel. You may use text with your cartoons to tell your story.
9 Now that you have learned some of the basics behind creating a comic strip, you need to learn to draw your characters. You will build a body and head using organic and geometric shapes. I will provide you with some examples and demonstrate how to build your character in class.
10 Creating a cartoon comic strip! STEPS: Sketches-Practice drawing cartoon heads, bodies and facial expressions using expressive lines, shapes and forms. (In sketchbook or on newsprint provided). Planning- Plan your idea and storyline. Rough Draft- Draw your panels on a newsprint and finalize your drawing. You should have a minimum of 6 panels and choose from layouts demonstrated in class. Final- Transfer your rough draft using a light board onto drawing paper. Remember to draw lightly in pencil first then go over it with a fine point marker.
11 Creating cartoon comic strips doesn t require many supplies. For our comic strip we will be using the following: Sketchbooks Sketch paper/newsprint Pencils Erasers Rulers White drawing vellum or light board Black fine markers

13 Evaluation Craftsmanship- Quality of final comic strip, neatness Directions- Followed basic steps, correct layout, minimum amount of panels, and implemented elements & principles Creativity- Evidence of personal interpretation, original characters Effort- Used class time wisely, focused on task, participated in class discussion
