2 RESEARCH QUESTIONS Study of living arrangements of the elderly indicates their status in a society, hence it is important to assess current situation as well as changes over period of time With whom the elderly population in India live with? Are there any differentials in living arrangements of the elderly based on Demographic and socio economic criteria Geography (state / place of residence) Are there any changes in living arrangements pattern of the elderly in India, over a period of time?
3 OUTLINE OF THE PRESENTATION Background characteristics and situation of elderly population Current pattern of their living arrangements ( ) Trends in living arrangement of the elderly (during and ) Differentials in living arrangement patterns
4 DATA SOURCE National Family Health Survey First and Third Rounds ( and ) These surveys are not exclusively meant to study the situation of elderly, however, various characteristics of the household population, (especially for those aged 60+ years) provide scope to study living arrangement patterns The information of each member of the household population was extracted from the raw data available for both rounds of the survey
5 METHODOLOGY The household data file contains following information for each of the household members Age, Sex, Relationship with the Head of the household, Marital Status, Educational Status Following information is available at the household level Geographic location (place of residence, state) Caste of the head of the household Possession of household durable items on the basis of which household Wealth Index has been constructed Using information as indicated above, trends and differentials in living arrangements were studied Estimates were derived using appropriate weights

16 Sum up Support given to the elderly and taking care of the elderly are two distinct concepts and living together with children may not truly mean economic security for the elderly and also depends upon direction of transfer of resources. At aggregate level, living arrangement at the best indicate co-residence Need to further investigate following aspects at the micro level for better programming Direction and extent to which inter-generational transfer of resources happens ; especially in female-headed households More in-depth inquiry of economic, social and emotional support systems from a gender perspective
