If you buy the textbook new in the FC bookstore (about $170), you will also receive a student s solutions manual, a MyMathLab access code, and access to Prentice Hall s Tutor Center, a telephone tutoring service that is available Sun Thurs, 2:00 9:00 pm. Option 2 MyMathLab. This is an online electronic version of our course materials. Access codes may be purchased in the FC bookstore, or online at ($80). Requires high-speed Internet access (DSL, cable, or on-campus labs). Enroll in Course ID zarske Note: You will be submitting your homework on paper, not online. Online access just gives you the electronic version of the textbook along with videos and animated clips, and access to Prentice Hall s Tutor Center. MATERIALS NEEDED: 1. Textbook and/or MyMathLab access (if you have the textbook, please bring it to class) 2. PENCIL and eraser (please do all work in pencil) 3. Scientific Calculator graphing calculators are also acceptable 4. Printer to print out homework worksheets (you can print in campus computer labs if needed) 5. Adobe Reader to access PDF files (already on campus lab computers) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of 'C' in MATH 040 F or math skills clearance. This is a survey course with selected topics from the history and development of mathematics, patterns and inductive reasoning, set theory and deductive reasoning, the real number system, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and problem solving. It is designed for students majoring in liberal arts, education or communication. Calculators or computers may be used for selected topics. (CSU) (UC) (Degree Credit) AA GE, CSU GE, IGETC STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of MATH 100 F Liberal Arts Mathematics, the student will be able to: 1. Perform operations on sets, and use Venn diagrams to represent sets and draw conclusions about the represented sets. 2. Solve geometric applications by selecting and applying appropriate formulas. 3. Calculate the probability of a simple or composite event. 4. Organize data in a meaningful way and apply the concepts of probability and statistics to a given situation in order to make relevant observations, predictions, and conclusions. 5. Use the rules of logic to determine equivalency of statements, analyze arguments and determine their validity, and draw valid conclusions from a given set of premises. Note: In a college course, it is expected that you will spend 2 hours studying outside of class time for every 1 hour you are in class. This means you should plan to spend at least 6 hours per week outside of class doing homework and studying, for a total of 9 hours per week needed for this class!!!! Zarske Math 100 Friday Fall

2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Exams: Three exams worth 200 points each. Notes allowed for each exam: One whole sheet of 8½ x11 paper with notes on ONE side. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you. Final Exam: Worth 200 points. Notes allowed: Two whole sheets of 8½ x11 paper with notes on ONE side. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you. In addition to the students notes, you may use a copy of the formula sheet which will be distributed in class. You will not need a scantron or bluebook for the exams. Team Quizzes: Team quizzes worth 5 points each will be given in class as per the schedule on p. 6 of this syllabus. You may use your book and notes for team quizzes. If you arrive after the quiz has begun or leave before we have completely finished the quiz including review of the answers, you will not get credit for the quiz. Homework: Homework worth 10 points per assignment will be collected at the beginning of each class meeting. The homework assignment sheet (pages 7-9 of this packet) gives the daily assignments. We will have limited class time to answer homework questions. You need to use any or all of your resources to get as many of your homework questions as possible answered before class begins: Use the solutions manual to guide you Ask me questions during office hours Ask for help in the tutoring center (LRC 806) Utilize the Pearson telephone tutoring service if you purchased MyMathLab resources See p. 3 of the syllabus for more information about resources for extra help. Reading Worksheets: These worksheets are posted on MyGateway, and will be sent as attachments to the weekly update s I will be sending you. The worksheets guide you through the sections in preparation for class. Even if you are using online materials, you will still fill out the worksheets on paper. Some worksheets are required; others are optional for extra credit. Book Homework: Show all your work neatly on notebook paper. The answers to all assigned problems are in the back of the textbook, or in the solutions manual. If you are using MyMathLab to access the text, see p. 7 of this packet ( Book Problems ) for instructions on accessing the problems and answers. Staple your work to any worksheets due that day, and turn in the whole assignment at the beginning of each class meeting. PLEASE USE REGULAR NOTEBOOK PAPER, NOT PAPER TORN FROM SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS THANK YOU! ATTENDANCE POLICY This class is not a typical lecture class. We work extensively in teams, which makes you interdependent with other students. Your regular attendance is important not only to your own success, but also to the success of your team. Treat this class like a job. You should only miss class for serious and compelling reasons, e.g. illness, death in the family, emergency, etc. If you must miss class, you must contact me by (or by phone if is not possible) to let me know you will miss class. I prefer that you contact me before class begins so I can adjust my class plans, but you must contact me no later than 24 hours after the class begins. If you miss class a total of two or more times without contacting me, I will assume you are dropping the class, and I will submit an instructor withdrawal. If you must miss a total of two or more class meetings (or six hours total) but you contact me, you are still in jeopardy of being dropped from the class. You may or may not be able to remain in the class, depending on the situation. Important: If you miss ANY of the first three class meetings without contacting me within 24 hours, you will be dropped from the class. Zarske Math 100 Friday Fall

If you wish, you may inform me of the reason for your absence, but you are not required to do so. Student Withdrawal: Fullerton College considers it to be the responsibility of the student to drop a class through Admissions and Records if he or she wishes to withdraw. If you wish to withdraw from this class by your choice, it is your responsibility to do so through Webstar on MyGateway. Deadline to withdraw from any Fullerton College class: Sunday November 20. MAKE-UP POLICY: Homework: Any homework not turned in at the beginning of the class meeting it is due will be counted late, regardless of the reason. Homework turned in late but during the class meeting in which it is due will have a penalty of 2 points. After the class period, there will be a penalty of 3 points per class day late. Quizzes: If for any reason you are not in class at the time a quiz is given, arrive after it has begun, or leave before it is over, you will not get credit for the quiz and may not make it up. Since there are no make-ups allowed, one missed quiz will be dropped. Exams: If you know in advance that you will be absent on the day of an exam, you may make arrangements with me to take the exam before the scheduled date and time. Everyone may make up or retake exactly one of the three exams on the makeup day, Friday December 16. If for any reason you miss the class time in which an exam is given, you must make it up on the makeup day or your score will be zero. If you take all exams as scheduled, you may retake one exam of your choice. You will receive the higher of the two scores. Final: No make-ups for any reason. 4 FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. Such standards are founded on basic concepts of integrity and honesty. These include, but are not limited to, the following areas: 1. Students shall not plagiarize 2. Students shall not cheat 3. Students shall not furnish materials or information in order to enable another student to plagiarize or cheat. Instructors may deal with academic dishonesty in one or more of the following ways: 1. Assign an appropriate academic penalty such as an oral reprimand or point reduction. 2. Assign an F on all or part of a particular paper, project, or exam. 3. Report to the appropriate administrators, with notification of same to the student(s), for disciplinary action by the College. Such a report will be accompanied by supporting evidence and documentation. Repeated violations may result in students receiving an F in the course, suspension or dismissal from the College. CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children are not allowed on campus unless supervised by a parent or guardian. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT Take note of the safety features in and around the classroom. Also, please study the posted evacuation routes. The most direct route of exit may not be the safest. Running out of the building during earthquakes may be dangerous. During strong earthquakes, it is recommended to duck, cover, and hold until the quaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others. You may purchase copies of these publications at the campus bookstore, or you may read them online at the Fullerton College website, STANDARDS OF STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE POLICY The standards of student conduct and disciplinary action for violation of Board Policy 5500 were approved by the NOCCCD Board on January 28, 2003, and were drawn in compliance with Sections 66300, 76030, 76033, 76034, of the State Education Code. Students are expected to respect and obey civil and criminal law and shall be subject to the legal penalties for violation of the city, county, state, and national law(s). Student conduct must conform to Board Policy and college regulations and procedures. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. Students have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the College s policies, rules and regulations and to conduct themselves in a reasonable, respectful manner, which is conducive toward attaining their educational goal. Upon registration, each student should obtain a copy of the College Policies and Regulations: Standards of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy. Contained therein are the policies approved by the Board of Trustees governing student behavior and the applicable penalties for violations of these policies. Copies are available in the Student Affairs Office, the Office of Equity and Diversity, all division offices, and the Student Services office. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting.
