1 OHLONE College Fall 2014 Professor Mosleh BA102A-04, 05 on line sections COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to macroeconomics is the economic behavior at the aggregate level. This course exposes students to essential tools that are helpful for understanding the total economics system at the national level. Students will study about how our personal choices affect the global economy. Transfer Credit: 3 semester units, meet GE requirements for Associates Degrees, and transfers to UC, CSU. Prerequisite Math-153 Required text book. Principles of Macroeconomics Brief Edition McConnell/Brue/Flynn. The required materials for this course found only in the Ohlone College Bookstore include a textbook that has been customized for Ohlone College at a reduced price. Packaged free with the textbook includes an access code for McGraw-Hill s Connect which will also be required to complete your homework. Since codes cannot be shared, every student must have their own access code to get credit for the homework. The ISBN for this package is Price $ Suggested Regular Reading: Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Week, and other business economics news articles Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Illustrate the basic concepts used in macroeconomic analysis. Classify various methods to measure nation s income. Demonstrate how unemployment and inflation rates are measured. Compare and contrast major theories of macroeconomics. Analyze and critically assess the effectiveness of fiscal and monetary policy. Student Learning Outcome: 1. Study the basic calculations to arrive at real and nominal GDP. 2. Evaluate the major economic variables such as; inflation, overall employment, growth, and international trade. 3. Apply the fundamental terms, concepts, ability to interpret, and apply the quantitative information to real world economic issues. 4. Determine the fiscal and monetary policies that government can apply to resolve a particular economic challenge.

2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: a. Two midterms. b. Final exam. c. Discussion questions. For the instructions on the discussion questions refer to the Discussion board. d. Learn Smart/Connect Homework Assignments. Click on the Homework in Connect Assignment [Tab] to access to the homework assignments. Each chapter has an assignment that covers the concepts within the chapter. You will see all the chapter titles listed after you have clicked on Homework in Connect. Learn Smart is the publisher s name for the system that contains these homework modules. NOTE: Each chapter homework assignment has a due date. Do not miss a due date. There are no makeups for missed homework. Homework will not be re-opened under any circumstancesnot due to technical problems, illness, etc. Dates for Homework are listed at the end of the Syllabus. Student Registration for Connect in Blackboard Connect is an online learning system designed to help you master the course content. Your assignments will represent a part of your final grade and can be accessed from your student Blackboard account. Register for Connect in Blackboard by following these steps: 1) Log in to your Blackboard course. 2) Go to your Homework in Connect click on any of the Connect assignments you find there. Another option is to click on "McGraw-Hill Higher Education. 3) Follow the steps to register with Connect. You only need to register with the access code one time. Once your account is set up, you can simply go back to your Blackboard Homework in Connect and open the chapter you want to work on. 3 INSTRUCTIONS ON POSTING MESSAGES ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD. When you access this class for the first time please do the following: (1) click the Discussions tab; (2) click the Introductions link; (3) click the button, Compose Message; the compose message window will open; (4) In the subject line, type in your Last Name followed by the word Introduction. Introduce yourself: tell us about yourself, work experience, academic goal when finished click the Post button. Method of Communication. Use the blackboard system, and the discussion board for class communication. To send , click on messages for sending , or click on discussion for posting messages. Discussion Board. Discussion board is the most effective tool of communication for this course; use the discussion board sending messages, post questions about the course contents, and communicate with the professor, and your classmates. Examination policies and requirement: All exams are multiple choice questions from the assigned chapters. There are 50 points each 100 points. To access to the exam, click on the Assessment [TAB]. Take the test, save, and submit before your time expires. Note: Exams are not available before or after due dates they ll be available on the due date from 8:00 am till 11:59 p.m. You have 2- hours to complete the test. Course Policies: 1) Students are expected to log in to the course about 3-4 times per week. Post your questions/comments on the discussion board Ask the professor folder. Students are required to complete the assigned task for the week. 2) Makeup Exams policy. NO makeup exam/assignment. This policy will be enforced. If you missed a test you ll get zero for the test. 3) Netiquette. Students must follow the etiquette of online courses. I expect all online participations and discussion postings to be constructive and respectful. Instigating other students, posting inappropriate language/comments to the professor or to a classmate, non-collegial behavior on the discussion board will not be tolerated, and you will be removed from the course immediately. 4) Academic dishonesty policy. This course will strictly adhere to the academic honor code set forth by the college. Any student caught violating the academic honor code will receive disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the college. Please see: 5) College tuition Policy: Students who have not paid by the census date will be dropped for nonpayment, and cannot receive a grade for the course. 6) Dropping Policy. If you are enrolled in this class all admissions matters including dropping, adding are your responsibility. Failure to notify admissions of your decision means you risk receiving a failing grade.
