1 Technology Enhanced Learning Blackboard Guides Blackboard Assignments: a student s guide to submitting work and viewing marks and feedback Submitting work electronically through Blackboard There are two main tools which lecturers can use to allow students to submit assignment work electronically though Blackboard. Blackboard Assignment tool - covered by this guide Turnitin Assignment tool - see separate user guide You can tell them apart by the different icons. Both tools work in a similar way. The main difference is that work submitted to Turnitin will be checked against a variety of electronic sources to produce an Originality Report. Another difference is that you can only submit one file at a time to Turnitin, whereas you can submit multiple files to a Blackboard Assignment. Please note that work which you submit via a standard Blackboard Assignment may also be submitted to Turnitin by the lecturer. How to submit your work to a Blackboard Assignment Assignments can be set up in any part of a Blackboard course. But typically they will be found in an area labelled Assignments or Assessments or Online Submission on the main course menu. Your lecturer will have provided instructions, and may have attached the assignment brief to the Blackboard Assignment. University of Reading September 2016 Page 1

2 By clicking on the assignment title, you are taken to a screen where you can submit your completed work. Click on Browse My Computer to locate and select the file you need to submit. If you need to upload multiple files, click Browse My Computer until you have selected each file e.g. you could upload a Word document, a PowerPoint presentation and an image or audio file. If you have uploaded a file in error, click on Do not attach to remove the file. When finished, make sure that you click Submit. University of Reading September 2016 Page 2

3 Optionally, you can click Save Draft to upload the files selected with the ability to return later to upload additional files and complete the submission. Please note that you MUST press Submit to make the uploaded files visible to your lecturers. Your lecturer may have chosen to allow students to submit more than once to the assignment you would need to check this with your lecturer. Normally, however, you should not press Submit until you have uploaded all of your files. Will I receive a receipt for my work? Once you have submitted your work, you will see a Success message on screen, saying This assignment is complete. You can go back into the Assignment at any time and you will be able to see the files you have submitted. In addition, you will receive an receipt, This will be sent to your University account, and will contain the following information: a submission ID your name and student number the assignment title the title and ID of the Blackboard course date and time of submission a link to the file(s) you submitted a link to a web version of the receipt University of Reading September 2016 Page 3

4 Please note: Do not delete the receipt - you should retain it as proof of submission. This receipt only indicates that a submission has been made by you on the date and time shown, and received by Blackboard. It is not confirmation that a file you have submitted is correct or has uploaded properly. Always check the files you have submitted to make sure that they can be viewed or downloaded. If you had pressed Save instead of Submit, you would see a different message The assignment has been saved. This icon indicates that the submission attempt is still in progress and is not yet visible to your lecturer. Press Continue to make any changes and submit the work. You will not receive an receipt when you Save as Draft only when you Submit. University of Reading September 2016 Page 4

5 As a precaution, you should always keep a backup copy (on your laptop, or USB stick, or even better in a cloud storage space such as Dropbox or One Drive) of all the files you submit to an assignment. Viewing your marks and feedback Your lecturer may provide feedback and/or marks through Blackboard, in which case you will be able to view these in due course in one of three ways 1. by going back to the Assignment. 2. by going to My Grades on the course menu If My Grades is not visible, you can go via Tools on the course menu.
