1 Curriculum Newsletter Spring 2016 Terms 3 & 4 Year 3

2 Dear Parents/Carers Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely time during the holidays and the children are rested and ready to continue their learning at Lyncrest. Our core value focus for this term is compassion. Next term our core value focus will be integrity. Literacy Term 3 Lessons in Term 3 will be based on the following two units: Fiction: A Tale of Two Robots by Roy Apps The story introduces a science fiction element to a familiar setting. Children will be encouraged to develop empathetic responses to characters and situations and an awareness of different points of view. Non-fiction: Discussion texts Non-fiction week is linked to the previous unit and will develop children s understanding of discussion texts, facts and opinion. Where appropriate, children will be encouraged to develop an awareness of audience and purpose in relation to the texts they are reading and writing. Grammar: determiners a and an. Term 4 Fiction: Poetry During this unit we will be using a number of short tongue twisters, riddles, nonsense poems and a longer performance poem to encourage the children to explore the impact of word play. We will learn the poems and enjoy the experience of performing them in a dramatic way. Non-fiction: Explanation texts Non-fiction week is linked to the scientific subject of the water cycle and will develop the children s understanding of the features of explanation texts in written and spoken forms. Grammar: Prefixes The children will still have opportunities to develop their speaking and listening, grammar, punctuation, report writing and handwriting skills in various other lessons throughout the day and they will continue to be heard reading in their guided reading groups. Book of the week will also continue, so please encourage your child to read outside of school and write a book review if they have particularly enjoyed a text. Numeracy In Mathematics this term we will be starting a new scheme of work called Inspire Maths which focuses on methods that have been successful in Singapore and China.; this scheme helps to plug gaps in learning and challenge real knowledge through questioning and problem solving. It makes certain that children have a broad knowledge of mathematical concepts and ensures that they understand mathematics fluently, before they move onto another skill. Term 3

3 This term the children will be developing their understanding and knowledge of number by recognising place value, adding and subtracting up to four digit numbers using column addition and solving problems including missing number problems. We will also begin to look at different models to multiply and divide numbers. Term 4 We will continue developing the children s knowledge of fractions, recalling and using multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, estimating the answer to a calculation and using inverse operations to check the answers. Homework Homework for Term 3 will be handed out at the end of the first week back. There will be a variety of homework challenges the children can choose two from every week to complete. These challenges relate to Maths, English and our current topic. Homework should be handed in by Wednesday please. Please read regularly with your child (at least 3-4 times a week) and practise their times tables whenever possible. If you can do this, you are putting your child in the best position possible to achieve and make great progress in their education. PE This term the children will enjoy two P.E. lessons; one with Mr Wilmott on Monday afternoons and one that will focus on their ability, balance and coordination with me on Thursday afternoons. (The children will also be able to take part in a lunch time sports club on a Monday.) Please check that their red shorts, white T-shirts, trainers/plimsolls and dark blue tracksuits are all named and placed in a named P.E. bag. This needs to be kept at school as we sometimes have the opportunity for extra lessons. Integrated Curriculum This term s topic is Let s go on an adventure. Would we like to visit Guatemala? This is a DT based unit during which we will create different types of puppets for a Mayan Creation Story puppet play which is based on a play script linked to our Literacy. We will also compare the Mayan creation story to other creation stories. In History, we will learn about the Mayan civilisation and buildings and in Geography we will discover Guatemala and its present day features. Next term our topic is The games children play. Finally The children have made a fantastic start to KS2 and I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them these past two terms.
