Sydney Airport Report Sydney Airport Community Forum February 2015 Ted Plummer Head of Government and Community Relations
Update on Ground Transport works
Ground transport solutions T1 and T2/T3 precincts Work to upgrade the road network is well underway Work to upgrade the road network at the T1 terminal precinct is well underway: - construction of a new centre road will provide better traffic circulation through the precinct - relocating car park entry and exit gates will provide faster entry and exits - a larger, purpose-built pick-up area will make pick-ups and drop-offs easier and quicker. Planning and design work for the remaining stages is underway with all work expected to be complete by The draft major development plan for proposed works in the T2/T3 precinct was submitted to the Deputy Prime Minister on 23 December 2014 for consideration. Subject to approval, work is expected to be well underway by the middle of the year. Given the high level of interest in improving cycling access to the airport, the Sydney Airport Cycling Forum has been established. Membership includes Sydney Airport, RMS, TfNSW, local government and local and peak cycling groups. 3
T1 transformation begins
Work commences on T1 departures Redevelopment of T1 departures to improve the passenger experience begins More than 13 million passengers pass through T1 every year, with international passengers forecast to increase to nearly 30 million by Sydney Airport has commenced a major transformation of T1 departures, with the first stage of works now underway. We are taking the opportunity to transform T1 at the same time as the arrival of our new duty free partner on 17 February and deliver a brand new departures experience for everyone travelling internationally from Sydney Airport. The benefits for passengers will include: - Faster access and improved wayfinding to airline gates - More seating capacity - Wider walkways - Brand new shopping and dining outlets - Environmentally friendly design features To minimise disruption to passengers, the works will be staged over 20 months with the first completed areas to open towards the end of
Other matters
Traffic report A new landmark air services agreement between the Chinese and Australian governments is a major boost to attracting more Chinese visitors. New China-Australia bilateral agreement will deliver an immediate 136 per cent increase in seat capacity and triple seat capacity by October China is Sydney s largest and fastest growing market, increasing 16.4 per cent in 2014 and accounting for half of all foreign nationality growth. Based on current growth rates, China is on track to overtake New Zealand as our largest inbound market in 2016 and this agreement will enable airlines to capitalise on this market s consistently strong growth. The new capacity available immediately for direct flights from second and third tier cities means that Australia will be able to accommodate growing demand from these regions. It is estimated that an additional daily A380 service from China to Sydney would, on an annual basis, contribute $388 million to the NSW economy and create 5,000 jobs, 4,000 of which would be in Sydney and country NSW. Other recent new airlines to Sydney include Air India, Scoot, AirAsia X, Cebu Pacific and Solomon Airlines. 7
National Airports Safeguarding Framework Sydney Airport continues to advocate to NSW and local governments the need to have regard to the National Airport Safeguarding Framework Managing wildlife NASF Guideline C (Managing the Risk of Wildlife Strikes in the Vicinity of Airports) indicates that the way in which existing land use is managed in the vicinity of airports can influence the risk of wildlife hazards. Many airports including Sydney Airport are located in areas which can be attractive to wildlife, especially birds and bats. Sydney Airport has recently made submissions to Marrickville and Rockdale City Councils and Sydney Water concerning this issue. The City of Botany Bay Council became the first council in NSW to recognise the NASF in one of its planning instruments) High Intensity Approach Lights The newly installed High Intensity Approach Lighting for the main north-south runway has improved airport efficiency, facilitating landings in low visibility conditions (such as fog), improving the on-time performance of our airlines, resulting in less disruption for passengers. 8
