1 Diploma in Tertiary Learning and Teaching (with exit point Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching) 2016 For New Zealand Citizens & Permanent Residents The Diploma in Tertiary Learning and Teaching (DTLT) is a part-time self-paced programme consisting of six 10 credit courses and four 15 credit courses. There is an exit option at 60 credits to achieve the level 5 Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching. The Diploma can be completed part-time over 3-4 years; the Certificate over months. The DTLT programme philosophy and graduate profile strands include the following: Becoming a reflective practitioner Valuing the role of the educator as a professional with dual professional responsibility Enabling practice to be informed by knowledge and understanding of current research/ theory/ best practice Ensuring practice is relevant, up to date and guided by principles of adult learning, student participation and curriculum alignment If you have already completed recognised other adult education courses it may be possible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for one or more of the diploma courses. The six core courses comprising the certificate are: Learning and teaching 1 (compulsory pre-requisite course) Approaches to learning and teaching Embedding literacy and numeracy (optional entry point) Cultural contexts for learning Design for learning Professional portfolio The Diploma requires one additional core, 15 credit course and three of the optional 15 credit courses: Applied Learning/Teaching Project (core) Learning and teaching 2 Special Topic: Educational leadership Special Topic: Teaching and Learning Research methods Research project Assessment for Learning ENTRY CRITERIA A personal interview may be part of the application process. Academic 12 credits in NCEA English level 1 and 36 credits in NCEA level 2 Alternative Evidence of equivalent literacy and ability to study at Level 5 through previous study, work or life experience
3 Teaching Requirement Applicants need to be working in a tertiary or community-based teaching environment with access to students, learning programmes and teaching opportunities. English Language Entry Requirement All applicants who do not have English, Maori or NZ sign as their first language are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This must be demonstrated by a band score of 6.0, or higher, for each component of the academic version of IELTS. Entry with credit This programme of study leads to the award of a qualification that has been approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The qualification may be delivered at a number of other tertiary institutes around New Zealand. If you were to transfer to one of those other institutes you may be granted academic credit for some of the papers completed but this is at the discretion of the other institute. Please note: Fees are not transferable between institutes. Individual Study Hours 7-8 hours per week Assessments Both competency-based and a graded system of assessment will be used within the programme. 5 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Course No Brief Description DTLT501 Learning and Teaching 1 DTLT502 DTLT504 DTLT511 DTLT611 DTLT602 To develop foundation understandings of the principles and practices of effective learning and teaching for tertiary learners. This practical course will briefly introduce all other aspects of the course, and provide participants with some basic practical skills for working successfully with learners. Approaches to Learning and Teaching To introduce participants to the core methods/approaches/strategies which promote successful learning; Participants will examine practice in their own context, and trial and evaluate new methods to improve learning. Embedding Literacy and Numeracy To identify the demands of a course and develop skills for assessing and meeting the needs of learners in respect of these demands. Students will analyse the demands of a section of their course, develop and perform diagnostic assessment to identify learner needs in respect of these demands, and will implement learning activities to address these needs. The focus is particularly on the academic, numeracy, literacy and ICT skills appropriate to the type of course and course level. Cultural Contexts for Learning To articulate in an educational context the responsibilities and obligations in Tiriti/the Treaty of Waitangi concept of partnership; to develop insight and understanding of the cultural diversity of tertiary learners in NZ, and share practical ways of ensuring these learner needs are addressed in your context. Design for Learning To develop an understanding of the principles of design for learning: planning, assessing, delivery and evaluation of learning activities, lessons, topics and courses. Participants will practice the skills of designing learning experiences which address student learning needs and show alignment of purpose, activity and outcome for learners. Participants will learn and practice different forms of assessment for learning. Professional Portfolio This course will facilitate the process of reflection on learning gained throughout the Certificate in Tertiary learning and Teaching. NOTE: Preparation for this course runs concurrent to every other foundation course in the Diploma. It comprises a developmental portfolio prepared alongside the foundation courses and an applied project, completed after the foundation courses have been passed.
