1 Reception/Year One Roma Newsletter Week 2, Term 3, 2014 Dear Families, Welcome to Term 3!! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and that you are all ready for a jam packed term full of rich learning experiences and fun activities! This term highlights a variety of themes in all areas of the curriculum. Our emphasis in Health this term is Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. We are looking forward to Junk Food Jim and the Flying Food Circus visiting on Friday in Week 3. This entertaining performance reinforce students learning about the five food groups and how important it is to eat healthy foods. In History, the focus will be on present and past family life and how events are commemorated. Our Indigenous perspectives focus will feature exposure to various Dreaming Stories and how they can be communicated through art work. In Religion our main theme is Church and Community. Students will learn about the different features of a Church and the different Communities to which they can belong. This term we will also cover the Human Sexuality component of Made in the Image of God in weeks I have attached a letter outlining the program. In Literacy, children will learn how to write an Animal Report. We will use information texts in class for the students to become familiar with a report genre.

2 Last Tuesday, we began our Footsteps Dance Program. The children seem to be having so much fun and are participating in individual and partner dances. This program will conclude in Week 5. Our class will be completing The Premier s Reading Challenge this term. This is a State Government reading incentive where we read a large number of books in class. Each student will be eligible for a medal or certificate when the challenge is completed. On Friday, we will celebrate our School Feast/VIP Day. There will be a mass at 9:15am in the church followed by an activity in the Library and then a shared morning tea. A big thank you for supplying the yummy food for our morning tea and we look forward to many of you joining us in Friday morning s program. Lastly, I have attached a Term Overview, copy of Important Dates for Term 3 and some ongoing reminders regarding classroom and school routines. Thank you for your continued support. Kind regards, Evette Roma Reception/1 Classroom Teacher

3 Communication Book Communication books are to be brought back to school each day. Please check your child s communication book every night for important information. I will turn the coloured flag at the front of the book up if there is a note. Please sign the note and turn it down when you have read it. If you write a note to me, please turn up the coloured flag. Blue Reader Bag (Communication Folder) Your child will use their blue reader bag to safely transport a number of items to and from school. These include their COMMUNICATION BOOK, HOMEWORK BOOK, READERS, READING JOURNALS and LIBRARY BOOKS. Children will keep their blue reader bags in the tubs during the day and then take them home at the end of each day. Sports Uniform PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN DAYS Children wear their Sports uniform every: Tuesday and Friday. Readers Children change their readers once a week on their Show and Share day. The same 3 books are kept for the whole week. Please remind your child to keep their readers and homework books in their reader folders and bring them to school every day. Please use the Home Reading Journal to record the number of days your child has been reading in order to reach their milestone days. Brain Food Brain Food is a mid-morning healthy snack to help increase the children s attention span and provide them with more energy for their learning. I recommend that you pack your child fresh or dried fruit or raw vegetables preferably cut up. Importantly please no nuts or food that contains nuts as there are students in our school who are highly allergic to these kinds of food. Thank you for your support.
