Summary of the Results October 28,
Acceptable Standard: Students who scored at or above the cut score... Basically those who passed the test Standard of Excellence: Students who achieved excellence on the test... Generally, above 80 or 85% Cohort: All students registered in a grade for the school year. This includes those who do not write due to absence or exemption. Nonwriters are scored zero. Writers: The students who actually write the test. 2
Grade 3: The PATs were not written in as part of the transition to grade 3 Student Learner Assessments. Some French Language Arts COHORT results in grades 6 and 9 are displayed but because of their smaller and specific population, detailed analysis is more appropriate at a school level. 3
For the purposes of this analysis, differences greater than 4% are indicated by either Red, for a negative difference Green, for a positive difference, Yellow where the difference was statistically similar. 4
Rate at which students who were registered in a grade also wrote the provincial achievement test. Including Vista Virtual... On par with province in grade 3 and 6 but affected by non participation of larger proportion of the Vista Virtual population in grade 9. Grade 6 Grade 9 English Language Arts 92.4 (+1.6) 81.7 (-6.8) French Language Arts 89.3 (-8.3) 100 (+3.8) Math 92.1 (+1.3) 81.5 (-7.9) Science 92.4 (+2.1) 82.6 (-7.3) Social Studies 92.4 (+2.6) 82.1 (-6.6) 5
Vista Virtual students are all over the province and beyond. Their non-participation results from many valid reasons that include: distance to writing centers, being out of province at time of tests, general dissatisfaction with the community schools in proximity to families involved. Therefore Vista Virtual impacts participation rates for the jurisdiction So, to understand local results, we also analyze participation excluding VV 6
Rate at which students who were registered in a grade also wrote the provincial achievement test. Excluding Vista Virtual... PHRD students have a high rate of participation. The participation rates of our students is an indicator of the level of Inclusion that we support in PHRD. Grade 6 Grade 9 English Language Arts 96.1 (+5.5) 95.1 (+6.6) French Language Arts 89.3 (-8.3) 100 (+3.8) Math 95.7 (+4.9) 95.7 (+6.3) Science 96.1 (+5.8) 96.4 (+6.5) Social Studies 96.1 (+6.3) 95.6 (+6.9) 7
The participation rates of students in our community schools exceeds that of the province in grade 6 and 9 (except in French, which because of the small cohort is more likely to experience fluctuations in participation percentage rates). A higher participation rates means that more students are included in regular classroom instruction and assessment, and fewer achievement tests are scored as zero. This is reflective of our inclusive school culture. 8
The provincial results have remained consistent with a slightly perceptible downward trend in recent years. 9
Like the Province, PHRD results are also very similar to previous year results. The trend line is slightly elevated indicating an improvement over time. 10
Vista Virtual School s low rate of participation impacts PHRD overall Cohort results by approximately: - About 3-4% in grade 6 - Up to 12% in grade 9 (highest relative enrollment) Therefore, to better understand local results, we analyze Cohort results with and without Vista Virtual. The impact will be evident in the following 2 slides 11
Students who did not write are scored as zero. This data includes Vista Virtual in the cohort. Grade 6 Grade 9 English Language Arts 89.0 (+6.2) 71.4 (-4.2) French Language Arts 75.0 (-12.5) 93.8(+8.0) Math 72.8 (-0.5) 59.3 (-6.0) Science 77.2 (+0.8) 68.3 (-5.8) Social Studies 68.0(-1.8) 57.3 (-7.8) 12
Students who did not write are scored as zero. This data excludes Vista Virtual in the cohort. The difference is especially noticeable in grade 9. Grade 6 Grade 9 English Language Arts 92.5 (+9.7) 83.1 (+7.5) French Language Arts 75.0 (-12.5) 93.8 (+8.0) Math 75.7 (+2.4) 69.7 (+4.4) Science 80.2 (+3.8) 79.5 (+5.4) Social Studies 70.7 (+0.9) 66.7 (+1.6) 13
PHRD s Community School Cohort results are on par with the province on 4 of 10 tests. PHRD s 2015 French LA 6 results were below the provincial average. PHRD results exceeded the province in grade 6 ELA and on four grade 9 tests: ELA, FLA, Math and Science. PHRD s aggregated cohort results (all tests combined) have demonstrated a slight, yet consistent improvement trend over the past several years. This occurred as the provincial average has declined slightly over the same time period. 14
The provincial results have remained virtually static for 8 years, and again there is a slightly perceptible decline. 15
PHRD results have remained similarly consistent over time. While they appears to be a slight decline caused by the most recent results, it is important to note that grade 3 results (traditionally very high) are no longer included in the calculation. 16
Vista Virtual is not a factor in the Writer results. Grade 6 Grade 9 English Language Arts 96.2 (+4.8) 87.4 (+1.9) French Language Arts 84.0 (-5.7) 93.8 (+4.0) Math 79.0 (-1.7) 72.8 (-0.3) Science 83.6 (-1.0) 82.5 (+0.1) Social Studies 73.6 (-4.1) 69.8 (-3.7) 17
PHRD s Writers results compared to the province are good ELA 6 exceeded the provincial average. Math 6 and Science 6 were identified as concerns in 2013 and are now on par with the provincial average. FLA 6 and SS6 results are a little behind the province. Grade 9 results on par with the province in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies and exceed the province in FLA. 18
Writer results contribute to the analysis of instruction because it reveals the success of students who actually participated in the tests 19

EXAM marks: These refer to student achievement on the exam itself. SCHOOL marks: These refer to student achievement on the assessments completed during the school term and marked by our teachers. COURSE Marks: These reference the success of students in the course as a whole. They are a combination of Exam and School marks. 31
Participation Rates: reflects the percentage of students enrolled in their 3 rd yr of high school in the reported school year and who completed the course in the reported school year. Students may have completed the course in a previous school year. 32
The rate of participation in Diploma Exams is an indicator of students choices and can be used to inform programming decisions and resource allocations. 33

This year, the rate at which students achieved the Acceptable level with their EXAM marks are within range of the Provincial rates on 4 courses: ELA 30-1, SS 30-1, Math 30-1 and Bio 30. PHRD exceeded the province in ELA 30-2, SS 30-2, Math 30-2 and Science 30. Chem 30 and Phys 30 had results that were was slightly behind the province. Relative to last year, PHRD results declined in Physics 30. PHRD results improved in ELA 30-2 SS 30-1 and Math 30-2 (for the 2 nd year in a row). In each of the other courses,(ela 30-1, SS 30-2, Math 30-1, Bio 30, Chem 30 and Science 30) PHRD results were within the range of the previous years 37
Improvement in dash 2 results and consistency in dash 1 results, both in excellence and in acceptable. 38
Lower N in math courses (compared to humanities) will result in more pronounced fluctuation from year to year % of students achieve the acceptable level. 39
Even though it looks like a dip in results this year, the overall trend over the past five years is improvement at both the acceptable standard and standard of excellence. 40
This represents the consistent level of achievement in humanities courses. This represents the average final mark of all PHRD students who were enrolled in these courses. 42
This represents the consistent level of achievement in Math courses. This represents the average final mark of all PHRD students who were enrolled in these courses. 43
This represents the consistent level of achievement in science courses. This represents the average final mark of all PHRD students who were enrolled in these courses. 44
Course achievement in the Humanities continues to be strong and consistent. There is noticeable improvement in the dash 2 courses and an overall increase in the standard of excellence in humanities courses. We continue to achieve well in both new Math programs even though the exam results in 30-1 were lower this year, we still exceeded the province. There has been consistently high levels of achievement in Math 30-1 and increased successes in Math
Students were successful in all 4 sciences! After being identified as a concern in 2012, the Chemistry exam results have improved somewhat, but still lag a little behind the provincial averages Despite narrowing the gap between PHRD and Provincial results in Physics exam results last year, results from indicate that it remains a subject of concern. Meanwhile Biology and Science 30 results continue to remain strong and consistent with or exceeding those of the province. 46
