First we float on our front, and then we search for sunken treasures (sinking toys) with our big fish eyes. Front Float and Recovery (Salamander); Rhythmic Breathing 5 s (Salamander) 4 We see a treasure in the shallow water and do a front swim to get there; ready, set, down we go. We try to swim under and pick up the treasure. Front Swim 2m (Salamander); Weight Transfer in Chest-Deep Water 3 Now we are tired, so we swim on our back. Back Glide with Kick 2m (Salamander) 5 We glided into a cave, so now we pretend to be swordfish and blast off out of the cave to find food. Front Glide with Kick 2m (Salamander) 4 Once we have picked up our food, we slide and kick on our back home to safety. Change Direction in Shallow Water; Back Glide with Kick 5m 4 for fitness! Using a kickboard, we try to kick with legs long all the way to the flags (5m). Before we can start the hunt we need to shout a pool rule. Go team go. Stop! Look! Ask!; Slip into Deep Water 4 We want to get warmed up for a big swim, so first we do some rhythmic breathing and try our surface support. Then we try our deep water floats. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways; Front Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Back Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Surface Support in Chest-Deep Water 5 sec 4 It is time to look for treasure (sinking rings). We grab our power boards (kickboards) and kick out to the marker (Instructor) and back. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m; Change Direction in Shallow Water 4 While gliding on our front we spot treasures on the bottom. We retrieve treasures that we spotted on the bottom while doing glides. Weight Transfer in Chest-Deep Water 3 We return to the pool edge doing back glides and with our treasure on our stomach. Once we are at the pool edge we look at our treasure. We have lots, so we return our treasure to the sea. Back Glide with Kick 5m 3 We are getting tired, so we head back to the shallow end. Front Glide with Kick 5m 5 We want to tell our dolphin friends all about our treasure. We swim on our side and jump out of the water to look for our dolphin friends. Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted) 1 It s time to go, so we say our Sunfish poem.
Lesson #3 Let s Be Fish How many kinds of fish can we be? Surface support glides : 1 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. We meet at our safe place. Who knows what is safe and unsafe? Facility/Site Orientation and Active Supervision 3 Today, we are silly Sunfish, and we are going to try to be many different fish. We go in the water with a big splash and great bobs, 2 ways (rhythmic breathing). Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways; Slip into Deep Water 4 First let us be tuna fish. We make our fins (arms) wave back and forth to swim on the spot. We keep our thumbs up on the way in and down on the way out. Surface Support in Chest-Deep Water 5 sec 4 We are going to be wiggle fish and use our arms and legs to wiggle and kick. Change Direction in Shallow Water 3 We are going to try to swim like the big fish in deeper water. Look at the pretty starfish with all the different colours! We can be starfish on our front and back. Front Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Back Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec 3 Stretch as we blast off on our back, back to shallower waters. Look at the swordfish. Back Glide with Kick 5m; Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted) 4 It is time to be Sunfish. (Introduce swimmers to unassisted roll-over glides.) We love to roll and slide in the water Roll-Over Glide with Kick 5m 5 Red Fish, Blue Fish, time for a game. Red fish means we chase our Instructor, and blue fish means we swim back to the wall. Change Direction in Shallow Water; Distance Swim 5m 3 We are becoming human again. Let s swim with big arm circles like the other children. to go home. We say the Sunfish poem. Front Swim 5m
Lesson #4 Search and Find We are looking for things to search and rescue. PFD/lifejacket and me, Stop! Look! Ask!; PFD/Lifejacket and Me and Swim 5m 3 Our search takes us to the deep water, and we look for objects underwater. We swim to the edge and climb out of the water for a short rest. Then we slip back into the water to look for more underwater objects. Slip into Deep Water 3 We swim back to the shallow water and remove our PFDs/lifejackets. We reach as far in front as we can and pull along our imaginary rope. Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted); PFD/Lifejacket and Me and Swim 5m 3 We made it back. Let s see who can keep their head up without touching the bottom. In the shallow end, we do the washing machine arms for 5 seconds without touching the wall. Surface Support in Chest-Deep Water 5 sec 2 We want to do the washing machine arms again. We climb out of the water and wait for our Instructor to tell us when to jump back in. We jump in the water, do a surface support, and then return to the wall (point of safety). Stop! Look! Ask!; Jump into Chest-Deep Water, Surface Support 5 sec 2 We need to go underwater to talk about our plans for the rescue. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways 4 We need some energy, so we dive underwater for some special treats. Weight Transfer in Chest- Deep Water 4 We swim on our front and look to see if there are treasures in the area. Front Glide with Kick 5m 3 We are getting tired, so we swim using big arms to the end. When we reach the end, we say our Sunfish poem and leave the pool. Front Swim 5m
Lesson #5 Preparing for the Picnic The class is getting ready for a sea picnic. Distance swim, Roll-over glides : Water noodles, Kickboards, Sinking toys NOTE: Complete a mid-session evaluation (optional). 2 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. We meet at our safe place and review what to do and where to be if there is an emergency Facility/Site Orientation and Active Supervision 4 The Sunfish class is getting ready for a picnic. We jump into the water. We have to collect our supplies, so we get our carts (kickboards) and kick up and down the aisles. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m; Slip into Deep Water 4 Each time we find a picnic item we hold it in our hand that is forward and kick back to the cart with it (in our swordfish position). We stretch long and straight. Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted) 4 We are looking for some fresh sea fruit for our picnic. We need to swim on our front and look; we can roll on our side to fill our basket and get a breath. Roll-Over Glide with Kick 5m; Front Swim 5m 5 Oh, oh, we have taken too long shopping; our boat is leaving. We swim towards shore with big arms and legs. The boat is a bit farther than we thought, so we need to do the swim again, only a bit farther! Front Swim 5m; Distance Swim 5m 5 The boat is full, so we will have to swim to the picnic site. To save energy, we decide to blast off on our back and roll our way across. Roll-Over Glide with Kick 5m 3 When we get to our picnic site, we catch frogs (sinking toys) that are diving under the water. Weight Transfer in Chest-Deep Water 3 The picnic ends, so we all head for home and say the Sunfish poem. Change Direction in Shallow Water
Lesson #6 The Obstacle Course Let s get fit. Glides, Weight transfer : Sinking objects, Kickboards 2 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. Review Emergency Procedures. Facility/Site Orientation and Active Supervision 3 It s time for the annual Sunfish Obstacle. Let s slip into the deep end. Stop! Look! Front Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Back Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec 3 At the side we climb out and get ready to jump. Jump into Chest-Deep Water, Surface Support 5 sec; Surface Support in Chest-Deep Water 5 sec 3 We need to get our breath and jump in so we can keep our heads up for 5 seconds. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways 3 This course is harder than we thought, so we take a rest and do some skinny fish back glides. Back Glide with Kick 5m 3 is up, so we do a front glide, still keeping our skinny fish shapes. Front Glide with Kick 5m 3 We dive down to the bottom to pick up some treasures (sinking objects). Weight Transfer in Chest-Deep Water 2 The treasures are heavy, so we roll on our back and glide with a kick. Back Glide with Kick 5m 2 We must stop at the course and are getting behind, so we swim fast on our front to catch up. Front Swim 5m 2 At the last stop we pick up a kickboard and kick to the finish line. The obstacle course is completed but not before we say our Sunfish goodbye poem! Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m
Lesson #7 Fitness for Fun Let s get fit. Kicking, Distance : Kickboards, PFDs/lifejackets 3 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. We discuss current weather conditions and/or local aquatic environments that might be hazardous at this time of year. We identify how to stay safe when in, on, or near the water (e.g., stay away from the edge of bodies of water, such as rivers and streams, etc.; only go to the water s edge when accompanied by an adult; and always wear a PFD/lifejacket when in a boat). Facility/Site Orientation and Active Supervision 3 for fitness! Sunfish have to be fit and to move fast. We want to warm up our fins, so we grab our kickboards for some kicking drills. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m 5 We notice some seagulls flying overhead. They want our lunch! Yikes! Quick! Let s roll over onto our back. Let s use our arms and legs and go, go, go! We practise this 3 times. Distance Swim 5m 3 We are getting out of breath and need to exercise our lungs too, so we blow slow bubbles with our bobs. We notice one of our sunfish (pretend) is looking very tired in the water. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways 3 to race. We Stop! Look! Ask! before jumping in and do surface support for 5 seconds, and then off we swim to the Instructor, remembering to use our big arms. Jump into Chest-Deep Water, Surface Support 5 sec; Front Swim 5m; Stop! Look! Ask! 6 We put on our PFDs/lifejackets and practise high Sunfish jumps into the water with safe Sunfish entries using Stop! Look! Ask! before we enter. We take off our PFDs/lifejackets. PFD/Lifejacket and Me and Swim 5m; Stop! Look! Ask! 5 We are ready to do some more swimming. Front Swim 5m 2 We share a pool rule, say our Sunfish poem, and head home. Facility/Site Orientation and Active Supervision
Lesson #8 Playground Pranks How much fun can we have at the playground? Distance swim, Change direction : Water noodles/kickboards 3 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. We hop on our water bikes (water noodles/kickboards) and get kicking. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m 4 There is a swimming track, so we decide to see how many times we can swim around it. Distance Swim 5m 4 We re getting thirsty and hungry but we still want to play, so we swim to the picnic basket and then back to the swings. Front Swim 5m; Change Direction in Shallow Water 4 We need to put our garbage away, so we slide on our sides across the field. Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted) 4 for a game. Our Instructor calls us over for the Red Fish, Blue Fish game. Front Swim 5m 5 It s getting dark, so we head for home doing roll-over glides with a kick because we want to swim like the corkscrew fish. Roll-Over Glide with Kick 5m 3 We are ready for some hide-and-seek fun. We sing the Motorboat song and work on exhaling under the water. Now it is time to say our Sunfish poem and go home. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways
Lesson #9 Sunfish to the Rescue We are superhero fish to the rescue. Floats : Sinking objects, Kickboards 2 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. We enter the water like superheroes. Stop! Look! Ask! 3 We do a superhero fish front glide with a kick to swim to our next assignment. Front Glide with Kick 5m 4 We need to take our rescue gear across the river while keeping it dry. Let s work together. A relay would be best. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m 6 Sunfish superheroes need to keep up their training, so let s head to deeper water and try our jumps and front and back floats to keep active! Jump into Chest-Deep Water, Surface Support 5 sec; Front Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Back Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec 4 Superhero fish love to do back glides with a kick. Let s show our Instructor how well we can swim around and back to the wall (change direction). Back Glide with Kick 5m 4 We see some supersnacks in the shallow water, but they are far away, so we take a supershape and swim. Distance Swim 5m 4 Now we want to know what is happening above and below water, so we practise roll-over glides with a kick to look for fish to rescue. Roll-Over Glide with Kick 5m 3 We find two fish (sinking objects), so we pick them up off the bottom of the pool. We decide to go home for a superhero Sunfish rest. We say the Sunfish poem. Weight Transfer in Chest-Deep Water
Lesson #10 The Grand Finale Let s show off our new Sunfish skills. Swim, Kicks, Roll-over glides : Kickboards, PFDs/lifejackets 3 Welcome the swimmers and take attendance. Ask!; Jump into Chest-Deep Water, Surface Support 5 sec 3 Let s hop on our bikes. Surface Support in Chest-Deep Water 5 sec; Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m 2 Today is parent fish day, so we need to show off all our skills. There is a lot of swimming to do. Let s get ready. Rhythmic Breathing 5 s, 2 Ways 3 Legs first, we grab our kickboards and kick, kick, kick. Kicking with Buoyant Object 5m 3 A quick break: how about some deep water floats? Front Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec; Back Float and Recovery in Deep Water 5 sec 5 Did someone say boat trip? We put on our PFDs/lifejackets. It s a big jump, and off we go. PFD/Lifejacket and Me and Swim 5m 2 The waves are picking up; roll over, roll over. Side Glide with Kick 2m (Assisted) 3 We take our PFDs/lifejackets off. It s time to do our front glide with a kick. Front Glide with Kick 5m 3 The show is almost over, so we head back to the stage. Change Direction in Shallow Water 3 In our final act, we demonstrate our front swim. It s time to go, so we say our Sunfish poem. Front Swim 5m Give swimmers their Preschool Progress Booklet. Encourage swimmers to continue to practise their swimming skills.
