3 QUESTION 1 CONTENT: WORLD WR II THE CAUSES AND OUTBREAK ( ) Key Question: How did Hitler s Nazi Party gain popularity in Germany after WWII? Read Sources 1A and 1B below and answer questions that follow SOURCE 1 A: An extract on reasons for the public support for the Nazi Party, taken from Successful Social Sciences As condition in Germany got worse, people turned once again to Hitler and the Nazi Party. The Nazis promised to bring law and order, create jobs, unite the German people, and make Germany strong again. Hitler promised to undo all the unpopular things in the Treaty of Versailles. The Nazis worked hard to spread their message. They used newspapers, radio, posters and public meetings. Josef Goebbels was in charge of propaganda. In the 1930 s people had never been exposed to mass media on this scale before and were influenced by it. Hitler was also a brilliant public speaker. The Nazis also used violence: Nazi Stormtroopers broke up the meetings of other political parties and intimidated people. In the 1930 elections, the Nazis increased their number of seats from 12 to 107.Another elections were held in 1932, the Nazis emerged victorious and Nazi Party became the biggest political party in Germany. They won 230 seats and this meant that 37% of the voters supported them. 5 QUESTION 2: THE NUCLEAR AGE AND THE COLD WAR Key Question: How did capitalism and communism contribute towards increased tension between the USA and USSR after the end of WWII in Europe? Read Source 2A below and answer questions that follow. Source 2A An extract on tension between the USA and USSR, taken from Spot On Social Sciences The USSR and the countries in the Allied Alliance did not get on with one another because they had completely different political and economic systems. During the war there were tensions between the USSR and the Allies, but because they were both trying to defeat a common enemy, they had put their differences aside. However, when they were trying to decide on how Germany should be run after the war, they clashed because they had completely different ideas. The USA and the other Western Countries wanted capitalism, democracy and freedom of individual rights. The Soviets wanted communism, which meant that there were no individual freedoms, and the central government owned all properties and businesses.
