1 Unit 1 Overview Unit 1 consists of 3 chapters. We will start out with a general overview of Social Studies and then some background on United States geography. This will lead to an examination on how geography affected Native American culture and look specifically at the Iroquois culture. Exploration will then serve as an introduction to our study of the American Colonies. Essential Questions 1. How do historians research the past? 2. How does geography affect how and where people live? 3. What are the political, social and economic characteristics of the various Native American cultures? 4. How did geography influence Native American culture? 5. How did the Iroquois adapt to the environment of New York State? 6. How did the Iroquois Confederacy work? 7. What were the major causes and effects of European exploration? 8. How have the events of exploration and colonization been interpreted throughout history? 9. What are the political, economic and social roots of colonial settlements in the Americas? 10. What role did geography play in the settlement pattern? Important Things to Know What is history?
