1 THE FAMILY OF JULIA ANN SMITH HICKS, WIFE 0F EDWARD HICKS John Smith, Sr. ( ), England. His will was recorded in Thitheby. He lived in Cropwell. He was a yeoman, an official in the royal household and a tiller of the soil. John Smith, Jr. ( ), England, baptized Oct. 02, He married Elizabeth Garton in She died in childbirth in John had one child, Thomas Smith, born in John s second marriage was to Frances Wilcocke. They had a daughter, Mamie Smith. Thomas Smith, Sr. was born in 1631 in Cropwell, England, a son of John Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth Garton Smith. His mother had died when he was two, so he had lived with his maternal grandparents. He attended school in Nottingham. He was known in Smith history as Thomas Smith of Nottingham and Gaddesby. He was a mercer (dealing in textiles and fine silk) and, by 1688, was a private banker. His male descendants were awarded a coat of arms. He married Fortune Collin on February 23, She died in He died on July 14, 1699 and was buried in the south transept of St. Mary s Church in Nottingham, England. Children of Thomas and Fortune were: Thomas Smith ( ) married Mary Manly and became the High Sheriff of Nottingham County ( ) John Smith died young and is buried at St. Mary s Church Samuel Smith ( ) married Elizabeth Cartlitch. He sold lands of Keyworth and moved to London, where he was a merchant and goldsmith. Later he and his brother Thomas were in banking as a part of Smith, Payne and Smith, a large firm in London. He was the 5 th John Smith in this line and landed in Virginia circa He settled in North Carolina in what was then Birtie County, later named Johnson County, and in 1770 became known as Wake County. He was a farmer. He married in It is recorded that even at almost sixty years old, he fought in the Revolutionary War as a Minute Man. It is believed that he had several children, including a son, John Smith, born in John Smith (1740-circa 1803) moved to Anson County and settled near Lilesville on a creek now named for him: Smith Creek. He married Mary Flake (cir.1748-cir.1794), daughter of Samuel Flake and his first wife. In 1771, he was recorded as a Regulator who fought in the Battle of Alamance. He was a Regulator from , a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence ( a forerunner of the Declaration of Independence at Philadelphia in 1776). He believed that opposition to tyrants was in obedience to God. In the Revolutionary War (1775), John volunteered in the Continental Army of the Province of North Carolina, a member of Captain John Allen s Company, 2 nd N.C. Regiment. John served in the struggle for freedom and independence for the thirteen colonies. No date available. Eli Smith (1778), son of John and Mary Flake Smith, married Sarah Sally Hicks. Eli fought in the Mexican-American War. Records show Eli and Mary had at least four children: A son, John Guyn Smith, labored to earn funds to attend UNC. There he studied to become a doctor. He was commissioned as a surgeon with a rank of Captain in the Confederate Army. A son, Samuel Smith, went out west. A son, Thomas Smith, went to California. A daughter, Julia Ann Smith, married Edward Hicks. They were the parents of John Thomas Tom Hicks. THE FAMILY OF MARY FLAKE SMITH, WIFE OF JOHN SMITH The Flake family is said to have been of Scotch-Irish descent. Samuel Flake and Henry Flake, two brothers, landed in New York. Henry Flake settled there. Samuel Flake traveled to Charleston, S.C. about 1720 and later moved to Lilesville, N.C. He died there in He was more than 100 years old. He was married twice. The name of his first wife is not known. Sallie Harris Flake was his second wife. Samuel became a large land owner, receiving several tracts from His Majesty s Letters Potent and some tracts by purchase. Samuel s children were: Mary Flake ( circa circa 1794), born from Samuel s first marriage, married John Smith ( circa 1803). (4)

4 John Flake Jordon Flake ( ) married Penelope Williams, and after her death, married Faithy Elizabeth Hannah Samuel Flake, Jr. (1766) married Elizabeth Gilbert William Flake (moved to Warren County) Elizabeth Flake, married Steven Birmingham and moved south Delilah Flake, married Hardy Hasker Sarah Flake, married Joshua Talent in 1798 Elijah Flake, married Elizabeth Williams Thomas Flake, a patriot in the Revolutionary War. In 1804, he sold his land in Anson County and moved west. His sons were William (born 1810), Augustus (born 1812), and Warren (born 1820). Jemima Flake, married William Cook THE FAMILY OF VIRGINIA JANE JENNIE O BRIEN SANFORD: The O Bryan family came from Ireland. We are not sure when the spelling of the name was changed to O Brien. Lawrence Larry O Brien came to America from County Fermanagh, Ireland. (Another source says County Cork, Ireland.) He landed first in Queen Anne County, Maryland, then at Cartledge Creek and finally at Beavers Dam Creek in the 1750 s. (Richmond County was made from Anson county in 1784.) He and his wife Frances were the parents of Tilletson O Brien (May July 11, 1840), David O Brien (1772), Dennis O Brien ( ) and two daughters. Larry and Frances are buried at the Old Hickory graveyard about two miles east of Green Lake Methodist Church in northeast Rockingham, N.C. Tilletson O Brien (May 1760-July 11, 1840) married Sarah Sally Dawkins (1766-after1860) in about He was a farmer. He fought in the Revolutionary War and served in the N.C. Militia in John Washington O Brien ( ), son of Tilletson and Sally O Brien, married Sarah Dawkins on Nov. 5, Sarah (5)

5 died in childbirth. In May 1812, John married Zilpha Casey (born ) whose parents were Jeremiah and Nancy Casey. John and Zilpha had ten children: Sarah Sallie O Brien ( ) married Noah Sanford ( ). Martha O Brien ( ) married Nathan Gibson John Jackson O Brien ( ) married Nancy Dawkins Dennis O Brien ( ) fought in Civil War, Co. E Richmond Regulators; 52 nd Regiment, N.C. Infantry. Enlisted in Richmond County on March 19, Sent to Camp Mangum. Some records say he attained the rank of Lt. Col. Family members say he fought at Fort Fisher. Dennis married Martha Jane Lovin. William Wesley O Brien ( ) married Anna Wright James Wellington O Brien ( before 1906) fought in the Civil War, Co. I, 32 nd Regiment, N.C. Troops, Confederate States of America. Enlisted on August 10, 1862 as a substitute. James married Mary Ann Lovin. Judith Judy O Brien ( ) married Travis Jernigan Virginia Jane Jennie O Brien ( ) married John Washington Sanford ( ). It is believed the marriage was around They were the parents of Martha Sanford Hicks. Elisha O Brien ( ) married Catherine McNeill. fought in the Civil War, Co. B, 33 rd Regiment, N.C. Troops, Confederate States of America. Enlisted as a private on July 1, Wounded in right shoulder at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 and sent to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3 in Richmond, Va. After two weeks, he was given a furlough home to recover. He rejoined his outfit in November He became a prisoner of war and was paroled when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Va., on April 9, Elijah O Brien ( ) married Jane Thrower
