2 Edward Kaseman Family History: Kaseman Edited by Ann Erling HISTORY OF EDWARD AND CHRISTINA KASEMAN Edward Kaseman was born on September 4, 1900 in McIntosh County, North Dakota. He was the son of Bernard and Paulina Kaseman, nee Hepper. The Kaseman homestead was 15 miles southwest of Wishek, North Dakota in McIntosh County. Edward lived on this farm with his parents and eleven brothers and sister until he reached the age of 22. His education was four years in a rural school. Christina Schilling was born on May 2, 1904, in Edmonds County, South Dakota. She was the daughter of John and Rosina Schilling nee Kessler. Christina s parents lived in McIntosh County, North Dakota until 1903, at which time they moved to Hosmer, South Dakota. Christina was the second oldest of six children; three sons and three daughters. She lived with her parents on their farm ten miles west of Hosmer until her marriage. She attended school for one year, Edward and Christina were married in the Lutheran Church at Hosmer, South Dakota on October 24, They are the parents of six sons and two daughters. From 1922 until 1927 they lived on the farm of Edward's parents. In 1927 they started their own farmstead. A barn and house were built on the site they had chosen about one and a half mile southwest of his father s farm. They began farming with two quarters of land, about eight milk cows, eight or ten horses, and a few young heifers and steers. They farmed for thirty eight years. In the 1930's when the drought hit the Dakotas, things were not easy for the young family. In 1934 there was no crop at all and in 1937 the grasshoppers ate the crop. During this time Edward worked for the WPA. Their perseverance carried them through the difficult years. In the 1940's it began to rain, the crops grew and prices rose.

3 Page 2 Four sons served in the United States army. Adam in Korea, Clifton in Korea, Marvin in Alaska, and Howard in Germany. Edward Junior served in the National Guard. By the grace of God all returned safe and sound. In 1959 they started to think of retirement. They built a new house in Wishek and moved into it in 1960 and went into semi-retirement. They did some-farming until 1965 when they sold their farm interests. They had started farming with 360 acres of land and a few head of horses and cattle. When they retired they had a good line of farm machinery, a herd of cattle, and 1,525 acres of land. Edward did carpenter work until 1971, when he went into full retirement. He now spends his time fishing, watching television, and gardening. Christina spends her time crocheting, knitting and quilting. She has made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. Participating in the Celebration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Edward and Christina Kaseman are their eight children, 27 grandchildren, and many friends and relatives. Married on September 23, 1945 to Gertrude Meidinger who was born in McIntosh County on September 22, Arthur died on February 6, Arthur and Gertrude had three daughters: Marion was born August 13, 1950 and was married October 25, 1969 to Robert Houn, born February 23, Janice was born August 15, Ruby was born November 3, Leona Susanne - Born March 11, 1926 in McIntosh County, North Dakota. Present address; 1221 Bristol Ave. Stockton, California. Occupation; housekeeper. Single. Leona Susanne died on December 5, 2005.
