The Campbell Family Chapter 1 9 th and 8 th generations featuring Adam and son Alexander Late 1700s and early 1800s 4/4/2012 2:08 PM
Many relatives have provided information and photos for the Campbell family story A hundred years ago no one knew computers would easily tell family stories without writing a book Thank you to the historians in our family who saved documents for the next generations
Some of our ancestors
Ireland - 3 areas are called Campbell
Pictured are Arromanus Lyle and son Bill Campbell Detailed information was passed down by family historian Bill Campbell and other relatives
Bill and wife Mary traveled to Alabama many times Bill is the largest boy seated on 1 st row 6
The 9 th generation Adam and Lucresa Campbell Late 1700s and early 1800s
The Campbell story begins The first mother we have details about in this PPT is Rachel, mother of our ancestor, Adam, born about 1802
His son Alexander, was born in Pendleton District in 1832 in North Carolina
The first reference to Adam Campbell is in 1829 in Pendleton District, South Carolina when he received land from his father-in-law John Green. The property was 50 acres on Rocky River, Pendleton District On December 9, 1829 announcement of a sheriff s sale of 50 acres belonging to Adam Campbell In 1830 this land was sold to James E. Reese. It was to satisfy a levy of $84 against Adam At the time Adam was living in Forsyth Co., Georgia
In 1836 Adam served in the Forsythe County Georgia Militia which was called out for the Seminole War Adam was a private in the first company of the Forsythe Guards led by Captain James Gaston In he moved to Walker County, as stated in an affidavit
Adam was nicknamed Camel His family lived in North Carolina 12
His wife was Lucresa Green Campbell (b.1804) According to a written affidavit Lucresa was Cherokee Indian She passed away at a young age 13
The following story tells of her father giving Lucresa land Both marked their name with an X Family historian Bill Campbell copied the document
Affidavit In Anderson, South Carolina in 1825, our ancestor John Green gives a tract of land to his daughter and her heirs
Deception saves wife and son
1835 President Andrew Jackson ordered the Cherokees to move west The event is known as the Trail of Tears Adam Campbell hid his Indian wife, Lucresa and first born child, Alexander, in the brush so they would not be caught and forced to leave North Carolina
Eight children were born to Adam Camel and Lucresa Unfortunately, genealogists indicate that Lucresa lived outside the Cherokee Nation when the Dawes Roll was taken in 1896 That indicates she was Cherokee by blood but not by citizenship. Because so many people were applying from the United States, the Dawes Commission rejected all applications in 1896 Changes came in the next few years and in 1900 the Dawes Commission began the final roll To qualify the Cherokee first had to be a legal resident of the Cherokee in Oklahoma, and second, be on the 1880 U S census and then on the 1896 Cherokee Nation census in Tahlequah, OK The Green family was not 18
