Today the District enrolls nearly 20,000 students in its four colleges, each unique in size, environment, and population mix. With more than 50 programs distributed among our four colleges, there is truly something for everyone s interests and goals. And the low cost of tuition can t be beat! From Apparel Design to Welding, each program is unique and includes hands-on classroom experience using state-of-the-art equipment. We even have programs that offer college credit to high school students. 2 DIVERSITY Welcome to all! No matter your age, ethnicity, interests, or background, the Peralta Colleges are a good fit. We have high school graduates, single parents, full- and part-time workers, career-changers, even college graduates who have come back to upgrade their skills. There are student clubs and activities for a wide range of interests to encourage friendships and make you feel right at home. 3 SUPPORT Get a good start! We know it can be tough in the beginning. That s why we have student services to help you along the way. From counselors to help you plan your classes to financial aid staff to help find ways to pay for them to our career centers where you can look for a job, we have the resources to lead you on a path to a successful college experience. 4 ACHIEVEMENT Plan for success! You can earn a short-term certificate or an associate degree and be ready to get a job and enter the workforce. Or you can transfer to a four-year institution to continue your education. Armed with a certificate or degree, an excellent education, and handson experience in the classroom or on an internship, you are ready to go to work. Despite unemployment scares, employers are looking for skilled workers in a variety of industries. I was so inspired and encouraged by my science instructors that I ve decided to transfer to UC Berkeley and pursue a career in bioengineering. BCC is such a great environment to learn in I love the diversity, the small class sizes, and the fact that everyone around me sets high goals for themselves. When I started at the College of Alameda, I didn t even know how to sketch or sew. But I learned so much in this program, and my instructors encouraged me, challenged me, and helped me find the creativity inside me that I didn t know I had. I just graduated, and I want to get a bachelor s degree in business so I can open my own store and design and sell my own private clothing label. Although I got a job right out of college as an entry-level mechanical engineer, I needed a better understanding of hands-on manufacturing to help me advance in my career. The classes I ve taken in Laney s Machine Technology program are taught by instructors with industry experience, and they provide real-life problems and solutions that have helped me become a better designer. Braden Williams Age: 25 Major: Machine Technology Goal: Enhance engineering skills Laney College, the largest of Peralta s four colleges, is located in the vibrant multicultural downtown of Oakland with convenient public transportation from all directions. This culturally rich, caring, and supportive learning environment also offers the biggest selection of career and technical education classes. Laney s winning combination of industry-experienced faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and programs that prepare students for 21st century jobs, makes Laney a top choice for taking the first step toward a bright future.

6 MERRITT COLLEGE Merritt College takes full advantage of its beautiful Oakland Hills location with buildings blending right into the topography. Lush plants and flowers grace the northern end of campus, thanks to the college s renowned Landscape Horticulture program. With gorgeous views of the Bay Area, Merritt is a perfect setting for the challenging and rigorous learning experiences that support the academic and workforce training success of its students. When I decided to start my second career in golf course management, I needed to learn about landscape maintenance in order to move up in my position. In Merritt s horticulture program, not only did I learn about maintaining grass, but I learned all about plants, design, and even irrigation construction. The program gave me real-world knowledge of what to expect on the job. And, best of all, I was able to take classes in the evening so I could continue to work during the day.
