1 YOUTH SPORTS PHILOSOPHY The goals and objectives of the YMCA youth sports program are based upon a philosophy of eight concepts. PARTICIPATION: Everyone plays! FUN: We play to have fun! FITNESS: Regular exercise is important for a lifetime. SKILLS: We learn basic fundamentals that help us play the game. TEAMWORK: We focus on cooperation, not competition. FAIR PLAY: We respect all involved; other players, coaches, parents and officials. VOLUNTEERS: They are the key to a successful program. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: Youth sports is a family program. Parents and kids learn and practice together. KINDER FOOTBALL September 6- October 4 (Football for boys & girls entering Kindergarten) A start up program for children interested in playing flag football. This is a lead into some of the fundamentals of football including signal calling, center snaps, catching the ball, hand offs and running plays. Children entering 5 year old Kindergarten in the Fall of 2015 are eligible. Program meets on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 until 6:30 pm at the YMCA on the Dr. Scholl Athletic Field. Registration begins: Mon, July 11 Registration ends: Fri, August 26 Program begins: Wed, September 6 Program ends: Wed, October 4 Rain date: Wed, October 11 Member: $30 Program Member: $60 $10.00 late fee after August 26 FLAG FOOTBALL (Grades 1-5) (Pending enrollment numbers 4th and 5th grade may be combined) August 27- October 15 This is the 29th anniversary of Flag Football at the Green County YMCA. The strength of the program is built upon tradition of great volunteers, hard working players and the support of the parents. We are also fortunate to have the Monroe High School Cheesemakers helping referee our games on Saturday mornings. **4th graders will play a more progressive league to get them ready for the next step of tackle football if they choose to go on. 2 BLAZE TACKLE FOOTBALL REGISTRATION Blaze Football is a (padded) tackle football program for grades 5-8. Blaze Football teams play in the Dane County Area Youth Football League. There are 17 communities in the DCAYFL providing 110 teams. Blaze play home games on Dr. Scholl Field at the YMCA. The league has a 7 game schedule and games are primarily played on Saturday s while practices are generally 2 hours long during the week. Member: $ Program Member: $ Each player s family will be asked to assist in fundraising. First year players (all 5 th graders) will need to purchase 2 jerseys. New players in 6 th will also have to purchase two jerseys. Jerseys: $40.00 each Registration Began in April 2016 Registration Ends: Mon, July 11th. Coaches Meeting: TBD at the Y Players Clinic (Skillz & Drillz Camp): August 3rd & 4th 5:30-7:30PM Games Begin: Saturday, Aug 27th Last Game: Saturday, Oct. 15th Member: $36 Program Member: $72 MAT RATS WRESTLING (Grades K-8) December 5-Late March The goal of this program is to expose kids to youth amateur wrestling in a positive environment. Practices will involve basic wrestling from three positions: top, bottom and standing. Conditioning, games and drills will help develop proper techniques while keeping the practices fun for everyone. Registration Begins: Monday, October 3 Parent Meeting: Sun Dec 4 at 4 p.m. Meeting location TBD at the MHS Practice will begin: The week of Dec. 5th. Practices held in High School Wrestling Room. 3 DRIBBLING DINOSAURS (Ages 5-6) November 5 December 17 This is the initial YMCA basketball program for boys and girls ages 5 and 6. Very basic skills will be taught including dribbling, passing, catching, shooting and basic defense. This program is in it s 24th year. Held at Northside Elementary School. 8 foot baskets will be used. *Please carry in the shoes that will be used during play to help keep the court dry. Registration begins: Friday, Sept. 16 Registration ends: Saturday, Oct. 15 Program begins: Saturday, Nov. 5 Program ends: Saturday, Dec. 17 *No Games Nov 26 5 year olds: 8:30-9:20 am 6 year olds: 9:30-10:20 am Note: Children need to be of age during the program. Includes a FREE Basketball $10.00 late fee after Oct. 15 T-shirt not guaranteed if registered after Oct. 15 GRADE 1 BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL November 5 December 17 This is the second step for YMCA basketball. This, for some, is their 3 rd year of YMCA ball. Players will continue to build skills that they learned in Dribbling Dinosaurs. The first three weeks focus on fundamental skills and the second three weeks are controlled game situations. 4 YOUTH TRAVELING BASKETBALL (Grades 4-8 Boys and Girls) The YMCA will be partnering with the Monroe Youth Basketball Club to provide our community s basketball opportunity this year. Practices will be held a few evenings weekly and focus on teaching fundamentals and a love of the game. Each team s coach will set up tournaments, or a league opportunity to add competitive games to the experience. Practices will start around mid-late November and the season will run towards the end of February. Boys and girls will have their own teams and they will also be separated by grade level. **Participants must live in Monroe to play for the Green County YMCA teams. The exception is if someone from a different community wants to play for Monroe because their community does not offer organized basketball for that particular grade. At grades 2-3 there will be some games played. It is the desire of the YMCA to keep grades together when playing all leagues. On occasion, the grades might have to be grouped to make even teams and a desirable league. Separate leagues for boys and girls. Practices are once a week (TBD). Games are played at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 am. Held at Northside Elementary School. *Please carry in the shoes that will be used during play to help keep the court dry. 5 3-4 YEAR OLD INDOOR SOCCER (5 year olds not in Kindergarten) First Session: Oct 22 Nov 19 Second Session: Feb 18 March 25 This program is intended for boys and girls ages 3, 4, & 5 years old; those who are not in Kindergarten. This program will teach the very basic fundamentals of soccer and is a great way for kids to stay active this fall and winter. Head Coach: Todd Carter Games: Played in the YMCA gym. Clean gym shoes should be worn. Games will be played 10:00-11:00 am. Registration begins: Sept 6 and Jan 3 Member: $24.00 Program Member: $36.00 (Grades K-1) Jan 7 - Feb 11 This program will focus on basic soccer skills while having fun. Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Y between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. Please carry in shoes that will be used during play to keep the gym floor dry. Registration begins: Mon, Nov. 7 Registration ends: Sat, Dec. 19 Program begins: Sat, Jan. 7 Program ends: Sat, Feb. 11 $10.00 late fee after Dec. 19 T-shirt not guaranteed if registered after Dec. 19 (Grades 2-3) Feb 18 April 8 Get ready for another season of fast action indoor soccer. The season will include instruction and league games. But do remember, having fun is our number one priority. Please carry in shoes to keep the gym floor dry. Shin guards are required. T-shirt not guaranteed if registered after Feb. 4 (Grades 4-5) Jan 3 Feb 7 The fun indoor soccer season kicks off with 4th and 5th graders and continues through the winter and early spring for other grades. The league involves both boys and girls. Shin guards are required and the shin guards should be covered by long socks. Games: Played in the YMCA gym, Gym shoes are required. Games start as early as 9:00 am Practices: No practices for Indoor Soccer Coaches: Volunteers needed to help guide teams.
