Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscle, nervous, special senses, and endocrine systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement. This course may meet the SACS natural science requirement for AGE, AAS, DIP, or CER programs.

2 This is a college transfer course and will be taught at the college/university level. Course Topics: Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of anatomy & physiology and their interrelationships of the following topics: 1) Body organization 2) Homeostasis 3) Cytology 4) Histology 5) Integumentary system 6) Skeletal system 7) Muscular system 8) Nervous system 9) Special senses 10) Endocrine system Required Course Materials: TEXTBOOKS: Anatomy and Physiology by Saladin Anatomy & Physiology Coloring Workbook 9 th Edition by Elaine Marieb Recommended Course Materials: 1. Anatomy & Physiology Revealed: An Interactive Cadaver Dissection Experience CD-ROM and/or Anatomy & Physiology Pocket Atlas by Shirley Jones F.A. Davis 2. Access to a computer with internet connection and Microsoft Office software If you do not have your own computer, you will need to fill out a permission slip to use the computers in the N407 Science Study Room. 3. One 3-ring binder & one package of colored pencils 4. Disposable gloves Grading Policy: Your final grade will be the average of your lectures & lab grades. Quizzes, homework and / or any other assignments in lecture and lab will be added together to total an additional test. A missed exam will be counted as a zero (see make-up policy).

3 Your grades will be posted on Blackboard. The 8-point CFCC grade scale is as follows: A B C D F 67-0 *WP withdraw passing (not computed into GPA) *WF withdraw failing (computed as an F ) *I Incomplete (paperwork required) Extra Credit: There will be no individual extra credit. Any extra credit will be given to all students in the form of additional questions on the tests. This course requires commitment from you. It may be necessary for you to limit your work schedule, your home schedule, and your course load in order for you to be successful in this course. I will not sacrifice the integrity of this course just so you can pass. You will earn your grade. One day my life or someone s life that I care about very much may rest in your hands. I expect you to know your stuff!! Attendance: According to CFCC Policy, a student must attend 80% of the total scheduled class hours in order to receive credit for the course. Since BIO 168 is a 96- hour course, if you miss more than 18 hours - not 18 class meetings, You will receive an F. These hours include both lecture and lab hours. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every lecture and lab class. You will be responsible for signing the attendance sheets for both lecture and lab. Failure to sign in will result in an absence. I FORGOT IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE! Under no circumstances can you sign in for another student. If a student leaves any time after roll has been called and fails to come back, or even comes back later, then they are subject to the attendance policy explained below. An absence is defined as any absence from either lecture or lab in full or in part by 30 minutes or more. A tardy will be assessed when a student fails to be in class on time or within 5 minutes OR if a student leaves lecture or lab early. Two tardies = one absence There are NO excused tardies or absences!

4 If your work schedule, family commitments, or health issues prevent you from attending class on a regular basis, a withdrawal is highly recommended. Bottom Line: You can take this course 1 of 2 ways: take it seriously OR take it over!! Religious Observances: Students will be allowed two days of excused absence each academic year for religious observances required by the faith of the student. These excused absences will be included in the twenty (20%) percent of allowable clock hour absences. Students are required to provide written notice of the request for an excused absence by completing the Religious Observance Absence form available in Student Development. The completed form must be submitted to the Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee a minimum of ten (10) school days prior to the religious observance. The Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee will notify the instructor within three (3) school days of receiving the request. Students will be given the opportunity to make up any tests or other work missed due to the excused absence and should work with their instructors in advance of the excused absence to delineate how to make up the missed coursework (N.C.G.S. 115D-5). Make-up Policy One make-up test for the lecture AND one make-up test for the lab component of the course is allowed for an absence due to a valid, documented reason. If a make-up test is allowed, the test will be given during my (Smoots or Uguccioni) office hours. There will be an automatic 10% grade deduction every class meeting until the test is taken. Any lecture test not taken within one week of the scheduled date will be graded as a zero. The format of the make-up is variable and may consist solely of one type of question or any combination of question types. You are allowed to take one test early during my office hours. The final exam must be taken on the scheduled date. A zero will be given for any missed lab quiz. One lab quiz will be dropped. If you are late to class and miss a quiz, you will receive a zero. A lab exam or quiz may be taken in another lab at the discretion of the instructor, only IF there is room in that section.

5 Withdrawals You are responsible for noting the deadline for withdrawal from the course. I will not turn in any withdrawal form to the registration office. This is your responsibility. Withdrawals will not be given once the 18 hours of absences has been exceeded. Please familiarize yourself with the criteria and withdrawal deadline dates in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook. Accommodation of Special Needs Based on Disability: Any student who requests classroom accommodations because of a disability must present documentation to verify his/her disability. This documentation must be furnished to the Disabilities Service Coordinator, and this should be provided prior to requesting accommodation by the instructor. On a confidential basis, the student, disabilities services and the instructor will determine the appropriate accommodations following documentation. Accommodations will be provided in a manner that is consistent with the objectives, outcomes, and academic standards of the course. Absences must not exceed class attendance policy. N407 Science Study Room N407 is a study room for use by all biology & chemistry students at CFCC. The room is equipped with computers with internet access, reference materials including skeletons, study posters, microscopes and slides. Learning Lab Science Tutors staff the study room and are available for tutoring. You must fill out a permission form to have access to this room and tutors. No printers are available in N407. N407 cannot be used during your scheduled BIO. 168 lecture or lab class. Academic Honesty: Any behavior indicating dishonesty, unethical intent or action as specified by CFCC will result in an "F" for the course. In addition, if you plan to include the policy on cheating or plagiarism (page 23 of the CFCC catalog), please make certain that the consequences of the action are clear to the student and to another college official. For example, instead of saying a grade of "F" will be given on an assignment, please include a numerical grade (0? 60?) beside the "F" or within the policy. Plagiarism is using as your own the words or ideas of another, whether written or oral. When you use material from a source, you

6 must quote or paraphrase accurately and properly cite the information. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism. Examples of plagiarism include word-for-word copying without correctly indicating that you are quoting, inaccurate quoting and paraphrasing, incomplete or missing documentation. Purchasing a paper or copying someone else's work and submitting it as your own are also plagiarism. Any misrepresentation of the source in your writing or speaking would constitute a form of plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is not acceptable and will result in the student being assigned a grade of zero for the assignment and/or the course, at the instructor's discretion. and Children on Campus Policy: Per CFCC policy (Catalog & Student Handbook,), children cannot be taken into classrooms, laboratories or shops unless authorized by College personnel. Please be advised that, in part due to liability issues, children are not allowed into any classroom! Contingency Plan: If there is an emergency and I or an appropriate substitute does not meet with the class, wait fifteen minutes. Then, everyone in the class should sign a roll sheet and designate someone to take it to the Department Chair or Secretary in N203. Please look for an announcement on Blackboard for assignments. Student Accounts: Your mycfcc account is a single username and password for all of your CFCC network accounts: , WebAdvisor, Blackboard, campus computer access, and more. The account provided to you (yourusername@mail.cfcc.edu) is used for all official communication with CFCC instructors and staff. Some information will ONLY be sent by and not by postal mail, so it is very important that you check this account. This account may also be used for personal mail, but is subject to the CFCC Acceptable Use Policy. Be sure to logout of your account in each service you may have opened ( , Blackboard, etc) when you leave a shared computer, otherwise it is possible for the next user of the computer to access your information.

8 6. Most of our lab work will be working on skeletons, models, diagrams, and computers. However, there will be some dissection. We will follow strict laboratory safety procedures when dissecting and performing experiments. Detailed instructions will be given prior to these labs. 7. No Medical Advice: The Anatomy & Physiology Instructors on staff at CFCC are educational instructors, not licensed physicians. Individual health questions discussed in class are from an educational perspective only. See your doctor for medical consultations. TIPS on MAKING THE GRADE 1. Attend all lectures and labs 2.
