This guide contains information on tasks pertaining to deploying, managing, and using the vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux. It is intended for network administrators, consultants, analysts, and any other IT professionals using the product. 10 Quest vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux Administration Guide Overview This document includes information on the set up and configuration of the environment required for the operation of the vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux. Purpose The primary function of the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux is to provide the vworkspace broker a means to manage and control a Linux virtual desktop, a function which is not currently possible. For this initial release, Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux will only provide certain basic functions that are absolutely necessary for the operation of the broker s management functions. These functions include: Act as an agent to provide host status to the vworkspace Connection Broker Configure the virtual desktop for a pending logon Perform OS-specific functions like: Shutdown OS Restart OS Logoff User Reset Session View and terminate processes Provide the vworkspace Connection Broker with certain information messages that are needed for the Broker to maintain a current record of the state of the Linux host. Prerequisites The Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux consists of a single executable daemon (system service) binary file that is included as part of the distribution package. This executable depends on several other Linux components to perform its required function. They are: A vworkspace Connection Broker: The purpose of vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions 7.2 is to connect to the vworkspace Broker version 7.1 or greater and enable the Broker to perform certain administrative functions of the virtual desktop. 2

11 vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux xrdp Installation: The virtual desktop is expected to have a fully working installation of xrdp installed. The installation of the RDP server is a prerequisite to the installation of this product; however the configuration and support of the RDP server is the responsibility of the end user and is outside the scope of this product. See the Systems Requirements document for additional prerequisites details. Installation In order to install the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux, you will only need the installation package that is provided by Quest. Once you have obtained this package, perform the following steps: 1. Copy the package to a temporary location 2. Extract the contents of the package into that location 3. You will find a folder called Virtual Desktop Extension 4. Enter this folder and execute the installation script called install.sh using the command./install.sh as the root user. 5. This will deploy the service control script qdcsvc.sh into the usual location, /etc/init.d 6. The executable file, qdcsvc will also be deployed into the target location of /usr/local/bin At this point the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux are installed. Operation The launching of this service is controlled on the virtual desktop via the regular Linux daemon control method, i.e. invoking a script in the /etc/init.d folder. In this case, the script is /etc/init.d/qdcsvc.sh To start the service, use the command (as root) /etc/init.dqdcsvc.sh start To stop the service, use the command (as root) /etc/init.d/qdcsvc.sh stop To reset the service, use the command (as root) /etc.init.d/qdcsvc.sh restart Beween those commands, it should be possible to control the service as necessary. 3

12 Quest vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux Administration Guide Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux Installation Example Installation should be performed by an experienced Linux administrator. This is an tested example installation which allows the user to obtain basic management and connectivity to the Linux Virtual Desktop. The general installation procedure consists of the following steps: Set up the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux Set up the rdp server (xrdp) Set up the additional dependencies Add the entry into the broker Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux The Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux is the system level application/daemon that allows the broker to manage operations on the Linux Virtual Desktop. It is supplied in the installation package. At this location you will find an installation script called install.sh. As root, execute this installation script and the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux components will be deployed. Additionally, the additions to the startup and shutdown settings will be made to automatically start up the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux when the Linux Virtual Desktop starts up. That is all that needs to be done to deploy the Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux. The Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux service can now be started or stopped via the command /etc/init.d/qdcsvc.sh start or stop. Restart should not be used. 4

13 vworkspace Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux RDP Server The next item that is necessary for a functioning installation is the RDP server itself. In the case of Linux, xrdp was used for testing. Specifically, the 0.6 snapshot from the xrdp svn repository was used. At least one machine to build the application on will be needed. For this example the xrdp package from the source was deployed and it was built manually. Compiling and Installing xrdp After obtaining the xrdp 0.6 source code, xrdp was built locally with one minor change to allow the vworkspace Connector for Windows clients to connect. In the file $/xrdp/libxrdp/xrdp_sec.c, the following lines were commented out as follows: 323: DEBUG(("xrdp_sec_process_logon_info: flags wrong, major error")); 324: return 1; After commenting out: // 323: DEBUG(("xrdp_sec_process_logon_info: flags wrong, major error")); // 324: return 1; This results in the application ignoring the flags and options that it does not understand as opposed to quitting with an error message. The building process is achieved with the following command sequence, all as the root user, and executed in the top level of the source tree of the xrdp source code../bootstrap - This will generate all the necessary preliminary files./configure - This will create the makefiles make - This will build all the components needed make install - This will install the components needed There are going to be many pre-requisites required for building XDRP, and the requirements are going to depend on the specific distribution. At the very least, the development packages have to be loaded. 5

The file $/xrdp/instfiles/xrdp.sh can be copied into the system location /etc/init.d if the standard daemon controls are desired. If the file is copied, then the xrdp service can be started and stopped using the command /etc/init.d/xrdp.sh start. If the xrdp components (xrdp and xrdp-sesman) become out of sync, they may not shutdown correctly and may have to be terminated. In such cases, use the 'ps' command to find the process IDs of the xrdp and xrdp-sesman processes and terminate them using the 'kill -9' command. Set up the dependencies To get the xrdp running in X11rdp mode, the X11rdp executable must be obtained or compiled. Once the executable is obtained, copy it to the location /usr/local/sbin. Additionally, a soft link will have to be made to allow the X11rdp xserver to locate the fonts needed for operation. To do this, do the following, again as root. mkdir -p /opt/x11rdp/lib/x11 cd /opt/x11rdp/lib/x11 ln -s /usr/share/x11/fonts At this point the X11rdp x server should be available for the RDP server to connect to. Broker Setup To add the Linux Virtual Desktop to the broker, the normal steps to add a new computer group must be taken and the Virtual Desktop as a 'Physical/Other' must be added. The Virtual Desktop Extensions for Linux will allow the broker to perform the basic OS operations and User logon reporting. Logging and Monitoring The service currently outputs extensive logging text into the virtual machine s message log located at /var/log/messages. This file can be monitored for errors and other run-time information. In the event an error log is necessary, it should be captured from this file. 6
