1 Ecosystem Poster By the end of this lesson you will: Understand the complexities and intricacies of how ecosystems work. o Understand and explain in depth the relationship between organisms and the abiotic and biotic factors within their environment o How factors such as food, water, shelter, and space affect populations in an ecosystem Directions create an ecosystem visually showing biotic and abiotic factors unique to that ecosystem. You must have a works cited page, so remember to record your sources on the worksheet as you complete each part. 1. Pick an ecosystem (be sure a water source is included): a. Deciduous Forest b. Desert c. Ocean d. Taiga e. Temperate Forest f. Tropical Rainforest g. Tundra h. Wetlands 2. Define abiotic and biotic factors and give an example of each within your ecosystem 3. Identify a minimum of 15 organisms from that ecosystem a. You must have at least one organism from each of the following types i. terrestrial animal ii. aquatic animal iii. a plant b. For all of your selected organisms identify if it s a producer, consumer, or decomposer c. Create 5 food chains that make up 1 food web involving all of these organisms i. Be sure to include the ultimate source of the earth s energy source within your food web ii. Make sure the food web connects aquatic and terrestrial organisms iii. Give an example for each of the following relationships: d. For one producer and one consumer within your food web, what effect would it have if their population increased? Decreased? 4. Identify the top 2 pollutants of your ecosystem a. How are they harming the ecosystem? b. Are they point source or nonpoint source pollutants? c. How do they affect the water quality of the ecosystem? (Refer to the previous unit on water quality) 5. Written explanation (individually done) a. Choose four organisms and explain how they interact with and respond to abiotic and biotic components within their environments. Include positive and negative outcomes that might happen due to these interactions. i. Example (your response will be in paragraph form) 1. Biotic a mouse eats grass; grass provides nourishment to live within its ecosystem. 2. Abiotic mouse burrows into the soil; it s using the soil for shelter. 1
