2 NSW WORKSHOP PROGRAM The NAATI workshop program is a set of workshops that are specifically designed to introduce the translating and interpreting industry through the context of NAATI testing. Choosing to attend any or all of these workshops will give you basic information about interpreting or translation techniques and tips on how to prepare for a NAATI accreditation test. You ll also have a unique opportunity to ask any questions about the test process. All workshops are conducted by experts in the field who offer a sound, practical understanding of test procedures and the theory and practice of translating and interpreting. The level of instruction and complexity in NAATI workshops have no comparison with any course in a educational institution. However, if you complete any of our workshops, you will have a better understanding of how to prepare for the test. Registration is required for all our workshops. You should send in the registration form with payment (at the back of this brochure) as soon as you have decided which date you wish to attend. In the event that there are not enough candidates to proceed with a workshop, you will be offered an alternative workshop date or a full refund. 2

3 INSIGHT INTO INTERPRETING THEORY & PRACTICE WORKSHOP WORKSHOP FEE: $ (including GST) This non-language specific workshop provides an in-depth and practical insight into each section of the interpreter test and an introduction to basic interpreting techniques, including: Social and cultural issues: through discussion, you will explore why and how culture plays a major role in the ability of an interpreter to communicate messages between their clients who usually come from different cultural backgrounds. Overview of interpreting: types of interpreting, objectives of interpreting, the communication process, qualities an interpreter needs. Conventions and techniques of interpreting Developing your skills: language skills, memory skills, role of note-taking in dialogue interpreting. Interpreting skills: what is acceptable and unacceptable accuracy, a comparison of written and oral standards. Dialogue interpreting practice Active listening skills Sight translation: oral translation of a written text, requirements and techniques, sight translation practice. Code of ethics: study of the principles of the AUSIT Code of Ethics, discussion of scenarios and how to solve ethical dilemmas in the test situation. Monologue (consecutive) interpreting: what it is, why it is done, why it is tested, note-taking skills for consecutive interpreting, note-taking practice and readback, extended oral translation practice. Test structure, process and marking criteria: preparing yourself, marking process. After the test: the realities of interpreting work, what to do if you fail. 4 INSIGHT INTO TRANSLATION THEORY & PRACTICE WORKSHOP WORKSHOP FEE: $ (including GST) This six (6) hour workshop is delivered in English by an experienced translator. SESSION TOPICS Types of translation Translation techniques Common mistakes Structure and format of the test How to prepare for the test Examiner expectations Ethics and professional conduct Ethical dilemmas and how to deal with them TRANSLATION EXERCISE At the end of the workshop you will be given a translation exercise to complete at home, with instructions on how and when to return it. Your translation will be sent to an examiner for feedback, which will be forwarded to you three weeks later. Please note that we are unable to accommodate requests to return feedback earlier than the three weeks. The exercise is not intended to be an indicator of the likely outcome of an actual test, though the examiner will comment on your overall performance and technique. 5 NOTE-TAKING SKILLS WORKSHOP WORKSHOP FEE: $ (including GST) This six (6) hour workshop will introduce you to specific note taking skills for interpreters. The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with an in-depth and practical understanding of the importance of note-taking and memory retention skills. 6 LOCATION WHERE ARE THE WORKSHOPS HELD? All the sessions are held at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts building, 280 Pitt Street, Sydney. HOW DO I GET THERE? BY CAR: parking is limited in the CBD. Public transport is advisable. BY TRAIN: NAATI is a short walk from both Central (15 min) and Town Hall (10 min) stations. It is advisable that participants print a copy of Ethics of Interpreting and Translating: A Guide to Obtaining NAATI Credentials (available online at and the AUSIT Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct (available online at Please bring a pen and notepaper to each workshop. All workshop participants will be provided with workshop notes and a certificate of attendance. Tea and coffee facilities will be provided at all workshops. No lunch will be provided. Participants should also look at purchasing a sample test kit as a recommended study aid. All test preparation products are available at your local NAATI office. 6

8 NAATI WORKSHOP POLICY 1. Full payment is required for an enrolment for a workshop (if payment does not accompany the enrolment form, it will not be processed until payment is received). 2. If you wish to transfer your registration to another workshop, you must request this in writing (mail, fax or ) to the NAATI Office where you have registered to do the workshop. Requests for a transfer to another workshop will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on the availability of places. 3. If you wish to cancel your workshop registration, you must request this in writing (mail, fax or ) to the NAATI Office where you have registered to do the workshop. 4. If you cancel your registration more than 7 working days before the workshop your fees will be refunded. 5. If you cancel your registration 7 working days before the workshop your fees will be refunded less 15% of the fees paid. 6. If you cancel your registration 1-6 working days before the workshop your fees will be refunded less 25% of the fees paid. 7. When cancelling a session or sessions that were part of a discounted multiple booking, the refund will comprise of workshop session fee, less the discount and any other applicable cancellation fees. 8. If you cancel or do not attend on the day of the workshop, no fees will be refunded. 9. NAATI reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any workshop. If you are registered for a workshop that NAATI cancels or reschedules you will be given the option of receiving a refund or transferring to another scheduled workshop where there are available places. 10.
