2 EU Regulatory background Overview of the regulatory background EU s set of food hygiene regulations: Hygiene Package since 1 January 2006 Covers the whole food chain ( farm to fork principle) Risk based, flexible requirements Certain activities must be regulated nationally by each Member State 3 EU Regulatory background EU Regulations do not apply to: the direct supply, by the producer, of small quantities of primary products to the final consumer or to local retail establishments directly supplying the final consumer Only certain EU requirements apply to: similar activities concerning small quantities of meat from poultry and lagomorphs slaughtered on the farm Member States shall establish, according to national law, rules governing these activities! 4 2

9 Future goals Opportunities for small-scale producers have improved considerably The situation is better than 4 years ago but the work is not finished yet! The future goal is to harmonise legislation of different sectors (food trade tax) 17 Thank you for your attention! 18 9
